June 2013 - Present 60-80 hours per week Gia Cefaratti - gcefaratti@ga-fc.com 216-701-9650 29311 Euclid Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44092 Provide assistance with activities of daily living for the elderly and adults suffering from anything ranging from addiction to disabilities and old age Personal care support (bathing, feeding, changing, medication administration, etc.) Home care support (cleaning, cooking, laundry, transportation, etc.) Companionship Managing appointments and daily routines My job as a caregiver at Guardian Angels includes any and all aspects of daily living. I have been truly blessed to work with such an amazing company and I have gained so many deep and meaningful relationships through them. Working with my clients has taught me resilience, compassion, and patience, above all else. Working with the elderly was never an area that particularly interested me, but I cannot begin to explain how rewarding my position has been during the last three years. Of course there are bad days, and sometimes it feels as though there are more bad days than good days. However, if there is one thing I learned, its that every single day teaches me something new. Every day is an opportunity to brighten a clients disposition and make him or her laugh. So many of my clients have been pushed aside by loved ones and some of them dont have anyone left. Knowing that I might be the only person they see all day makes me feel like I have a real purpose in my job. Seeing my clients smile and light up when they see me is by far the most gratifying part of my workday. Everything I learn while at Guardian Angels continually prepares me for when I will have my own patients in the future. This job has given me such a respect for those that work with the elderly, as we all know theyre not the most compliant group. Being respectful and assertive, when appropriate, while still being compassionate and understanding is a talent that seems lost among some of todays health professionals. I know that my work as a Guardian Angels caregiver will help me sharpen that skill and bring it to the table when I earn the title of doctor.
Records Acquisition Coordinator Cefaratti Group
June 2012 - September 2014 30-40 hours per week Robert Adelman - radelman@cefgroup.com 216-696-1161 4608 St. Clair Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44103 Creating, submitting, and following up on medical record requests and authorization requests for various attorneys Contacting and troubleshooting problems that arise with medical providers regarding the requests Basic record keeping and filing Customer service for attorneys, clients, and medical providers My position at Cefaratti Group was very different from my position at Guardian Angels. Here I learned the legal aspects of medical documentation. As a records acquisition coordinator, my main job was to obtain medical records on the behalf of our client, the attorney. This process familiarized me with the required authorization and medical release forms needed to obtain someone elses medical records, HIPAA rules and regulations, and medical billing procedures. I became more aware of how many people are involved in the documentation office, the frustration that comes with medical providers cooperation, and the demanding role of attorneys in the entire process. While working at Cefaratti Group, I learned how to help clients with technical troubleshooting, how medical records went through printing and production, and how much work goes into making a client happy. Many aspects of this job forced me out of my comfort zone, such as customer service and following up with medical providers. This job gave me courage and confidence in myself, forced me to learn how to handle uncomfortable situations, and encouraged me to ask questions. All of these lessons will give me an advantage in medical school, as I have been able to practice these skills during my two years at Cefaratti Group.
Legal Intern Reminger Co., LLC
November 2012 - January 2013 40 hours per week Diane Giorgi Dgiorgi@reminger.com - 216-430-2184 101 West Prospect Avenue, Suite 1400 Cleveland, OH 44115 Submitting and following up on medical record requests from various attorneys Contacting and troubleshooting problems that arise with medical providers regarding the requests Medical indexing Filing Word processing dictations Compiling and separating medical records for upcoming cases Updating client contact information Being a legal intern at Reminger was one of my most memorable positions. This was one of my first real experiences being a professional employee and working in an office setting. At Reminger, I learned the ins and outs of practicing law. I was able to work with various attorneys and learn their styles and practices as well as their areas of specialty. The area I was most interested in while at Reminger though, was medical malpractice defense. Working with the attorneys that specialized in medical malpractice and hospital defense gave me a very interesting look into the legal aspect of medicine. Paralegals and nurse paralegals were the backbone of communication and taught me most of what I understand about the process of medical malpractice defense lawsuits. In addition, I was able to form relationships and make connections with attorneys and personnel that I later came back into contact with while at Cefaratti Group. Working with the legal side of healthcare will always be something that sticks with me through medical school and when practicing medicine. Seeing the intricacy of the legal system and how it intertwines with my interest in medicine was such a unique experience. I learned so much while at Reminger and I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity they provided me with.
Lifeguard Wickliffe Aquatic Center
June 2009 - September 2013 60 hours per week Becky Malinas - becky19896@gmail.com / becky.malinas@weschools.org 440-382-4767 28730 Ridge Rd Wickliffe, OH Surveillance of swimmers and monitoring patrons in the pool and on the pool deck Basic maintenance of the pool and pool area Pool chemical checks to ensure safety and hygiene CPR and first aid certification Performing rescues in the event of drowning or swimming accidents Basic record keeping of chemical checks and first aid Instructed swimming lessons The summers I spent working as a lifeguard gave me my first and most basic taste of employment. As a lifeguard, learning first aid and CPR introduced me to what would eventually become my passion. As a swimming lessons instructor, I learned the patience that comes with trying to teach children, as well as the reward. I also learned the discipline and control that comes with having your first job. Staying on my toes in the hot summer sun wasnt always easy, but it was well worth it. This job taught me how to balance safety and having fun, something that continues to be a challenge for some people today. It may not seem like having this job would help me much in medical school, but I beg to differ. Being a lifeguard taught me what it was like to earn my living, and how much work really goes into getting that first paycheck. Although my summers as a lifeguard are long gone, those summers help lay the foundation for a hard worker and a diligent employee.
