Brittney Raffo reaches new heights in pole vault

The Seneca junior brings her gymnastics talent to track and field, setting new school and meet records
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Last winter, pole vault was a
completely foreign concept to
Seneca High School junior Brittney Raffo. She had never competed in pole vault before, instead focusing on gymnastics for most of
her childhood.
This winter, Raffo isnt just
competing in pole vault, shes
jumping her way up the state performance lists and into the record
books.
Its been a whirlwind year on
the runway for Raffo, as she went
from learning the sport of pole
vault last spring to setting a new
record at the South Jersey Group
III sectional meet in February
and qualifying for the NJSIAA
Meet of Champions.
Raffos journey into pole vault
was an easy one thanks to the
skills she learned as a gymnast.
Raffo competed for many years at
Will-Moor Gymnastics in Mt.
Laurel.
I've done gymnastics my
whole life, Raffo said. (Pole
vault) was just something I was
interested in.
There is a lot of crossover between the skills Raffo used in
gymnastics and the skills she
uses in pole vault. Raffos favorite
apparatus in gymnastics was the

vault, an event featuring a sprint
down a runway similar to how
athletes sprint down a runway in
pole vault.
Raffo also liked how athletes in

pole vault go upside down, something she enjoyed doing in gymnastics.

My favorite part about pole
vault would be going upside

down, she said. Theres not

many other sports where you can
go upside down.
As last spring wore on and
Raffo got more interested in

track, she began practicing pole

vault skills at the gym more than
her gymnastics skills.
I think everything transitioned to pole vault. It's helped me
a lot, Raffo said. I would go to
the gym and I would only do stuff
that would help with the pole
vault.
Raffos first season last spring
had its ups and downs.
There was a meet where I had
no height, I didn't clear seven
(feet), she said. But by the seasons end, I was starting to get better numbers.
Raffo managed to qualify for
the NJSIAA Group III finals and
hit a nine-foot vault at the group
championships. The jump was
tied for the best vault for the girls
team for the season.
Entering the 2015-16 indoor season, Raffo was poised to break
out. She set a new personal best
and broke the Seneca school
record at the NJSIAA Group III
Relay Championships on Jan. 17
with a 11-foot vault. Raffo reached
11 feet again at the Morris County
Coaches Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y., on Jan. 27.
The biggest improvement Raffo
has made this season has been
with steps down the runway and
building momentum into the
vault.

Seneca grad and Stockton psychology major Morgan Barnett
travels with Medford UMC on mission trip to Mexico
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
As a psychology major from
Stockton University, Morgan Barnett saw no better opportunity
than to help at a school in a heavily impoverished area of Mexico.
These kids all needed some
sort of psychological treatment
with everything they had already
been through at such a young
age, Barnett said.
The Seneca High School graduate was surprised by how open
the children acted around her,

being she was a total stranger.

She noticed one of the students
crying one day while the class
was trying to tell Barnett stories,
so she quickly brought a translator over to see what the problem
was. The young girl had recently
lost her mother right before
Christmas and was crying because Barnett reminded her so
much of her mom.
I hugged her so closely, I never
wanted to put her down again,
Barnett said.
She was given the opportunity
to connect with these children

and hear about their experiences

through a mission trip arranged
by her local church, Medford
United Methodist. Morgan was
one of six young adults who accompanied Pastor Kathleen Stolz
to Rio Bravo, Mexico, a town located in the state of Tamaulipas,
about 15 minutes over the Texas
border.
Stolz joined Medford United
Methodist Church as associate
pastor in 2013. Before coming to
South Jersey, she enjoyed a long

in our opinion

Hello, spring, are you here yet?

Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
arch 20. Eleven more days. It
cant come soon enough. Officially, thats the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyones guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?
Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunges us every year, no matter how mild or extreme is.
We got lucky this winter, with just
one major snowstorm that crippled us
for a week or so. Its been bitter cold at
times, too, as any winter is, and we got
a sprinkling of wet weather last week.

Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to this
spring? While you are out and about
enjoying what hopefully will be beautiful
weather, send us the photos you take
along the way, and well be happy to share
them with the rest of the town.

But, hey, its in the 70s this week!

No matter how bad it is, winter affects all of our moods, and it affects
our bottom lines, too.
Well most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow and cold weather affects local
businesses as well, especially retail
shops. Bad weather keeps patrons in-

side. The arrival of spring weather on

a consistent basis will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Cold weather keeps people in the
mindset of no end in sight, and prevents many from taking day trips to
our states wonderful good-weather
spots, or from planning future trips, as
well.
In a little more than 60 days, the official start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like its right around the corner.
Lets hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesnt reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!

Pinelands Library takes part in Read Across America

By MARGARET LAFFERTY
Medford Library Association
How about some of the fantastic weather
we have had recently? Winter seems to be
on its last leg, and spring is right around
the corner. I cant wait. How about you?
The Read Across America program recently began. It is sponsored by the National Education Association and is designed
to foster a love of reading in children. We
are having a clue hunt that will require
your young ones to use all their library
skills to honor this program.
We are hoping to see many of our slightly older (ages 7 10) tween readers at our
discussion of I Am Malala: How One Girl
Stood Up for Education and Changed the
World. This book is the true and inspiring
story of Malala Yousafzai in her own
words. It is about the power of one, and
the difference each of us can make. You

can find us at the library on March 9 at 4

p.m. for this.
There is also a great book discussion on
March 29 at 6 p.m. for the adults. The novel
is Goodnight Nobody by Jennifer Weiner.
The story follows Kara Klein as she tries to
solve a murder mystery while juggling
three children and her own problems.
Books are available at the library and light
refreshments will be provided. You will
also learn about the opportunity to meet
the author at a later date.
In keeping with our usual monthly offerings, on March 16 there will be an all-day
Make and Take opportunity. With the approach of St. Patricks Day, do you think it
might be something green? The childrens
reading raffle prize is an Easter-themed
basket, and for the adult raffle, there is an
indulgence basket full of books and ice
cream fixings.
Have you seen the Read-O-Saurus-Rex

backpacks at the library? Your little ones

will love having a place to keep their books
safe and secure, and they are available in a
variety of colors. Your donation for the
backpack goes directly to supporting your
local library.
Until next time, keep turning those
pages and dont worry about staying warm.
Plant a flower!

and varied career as a Christian
ambassador. But in all the places
she has lived and people she has
served, it is children and youth
who most touch her heart.
It is young adults who can and
will make a difference in this
world, Stolz said. The connections they make so easily with
others allow us as leaders to admire the ability as we work alongside them to forge new relationships.
We live in a time when people,
especially young people, want to
know how the church can make a
difference, and Kathleen is great
at translating the teachings of the
gospel into tangible action. I'm so
happy to be in ministry along
with her, Senior Pastor Joe Monahan said.
For years, the Medford United
Methodist Church had been putting together trips for older adults
and younger kids, but there was
not much opportunity for young
adults.
Barnett put her head together
with Stoltz to brainstorm some

ideas and was looking at possibly

going to North Carolina or Haiti
before getting in contact with Associate Pastor Tom Lank of the
Haddonfield United Methodist
Church.
Lank had been making the trip
to Rio Bravo with members of his
church for years and was looking
to fill spots for this years trip.
We hopped on board really
quickly, Barnett said. Just the
idea of going to a different country was really appealing. I love to
travel and appreciated the authentic experience of going
through the border that the mission trip offered.
The MUMC group was responsible for its transportation to
Lake Whitney Airport in Texas,
and the Manos Juntas Volunteers

in Mission Group would take the

reins from there.
Rio Bravo is home to Manos
Juntas VIM Mexico, A.C., a ministry of the Methodist Church of
Mexico.
Manos Juntas wanted to have a
team from America come work
with the residents of Rio Bravo to
open the eyes of the community
by witnessing a group that wasnt
family or friends but was still
willing to help.
We wanted to culturally empower the local community in Rio
Bravo, Barnett said.

trip were responsible for having

trip themselves, and the rest was

Barnett says trip worth every penny

provided by contributions from
the congregation.
Barnett said it was worth every
penny because of the unforgettable experiences she was able to
have with the children.
She was amazed at how much
they did with so few resources.
Its common in America to have
multiple schools in one town for
kindergarten through fourth
grade; in Rio Bravo they have
three classrooms for kindergarten through seventh grade.
One day we thought it would

be a good idea to bring the students some beach balls and parachutes to show them what we typically do in gym class in America, Barnett said.
The kids were ecstatic when
they were introduced to these
new fun games.
Ive never seen someone so
happy in my life to play with
something so cheap, Barnett.
The kids were dying for our attention.
Barnett noted the fun-filled day
ended with many hugs and smiles
on everyones faces.
This lends a dignity and importance to the work when the locals see us take pride and joy in it
with them, Stolz said. Hopeful-

ly, the pride we feel works to bring

them confidence, too.
Though the group went in as
total strangers, it was clear by the
end of the trip it had made connections with these people and
left a lasting mark that had Rio
Bravo wishing MUMC would
come back.
When asked if she would return to the area, Stolz readily
replied with a smile, Were already planning the next trip!

Raffo began practicing last spring

RAFFO
Continued from page 1
Since last year, I understand
the technique more and how it's
supposed to look, she said. I'm
more aggressive with it. I'm definitely still learning.
Raffo entered the NJSIAA
South Jersey Group III meet with
a legitimate chance of breaking
the meet record of 10-feet, 7-inches set in 2012 by Moorestowns
Alexandra Elder. Raffo eclipsed
the mark on her final attempt of
PSA

the meet with a 10-foot, 8-inch

vault.
I was really excited, because it
was on the last attempt, Raffo
said.
Raffo had a 10-foot vault two
weeks later in the NJSIAA Group
III Championships, qualifying
her for the Meet of Champions
less than a year after she picked
up the sport.
Raffos early success has her

confident she could be one of the

states best athletes before she
graduates. Raffo gave up gymnastics in January and is now focusing even more on excelling in pole
vault. With the spring track and
field season and her senior year
still to come, Raffo has lofty goals
she still wants to achieve.
By the end of next year, my
goal is to hopefully be at the top of
the Meet of Champs, she said.
