Lesson Focus/Goal: the fluency component of phrasing

Instructional Technique:
Briefly describe the instructional technique, strategy, or activity you will be using.
Students will be working on phrasing. Phrasing means to read just like we talk. We speak in phrases to
help the listener understand what we are saying. We read words in phrases so the words are connected.
This helps us comprehend the text.

Lesson Introduction:
Include an introductory statement about what students will be learning to do and a brief
explanation of how this strategy will be useful to them as readers.
Today class, we will be working on a component of fluency called phrasing. When we speak to
someone, we automatically speak in phrases. This helps the listener understand our message. When we
read, we need to do the exact same thing. It is important to use phrasing when reading orally so we use
our voices as a tool for comprehension. But the most important thing to remember about phrasing is
that we need to do the exact same thing when we are reading silently. Using phrasing when we read
silently helps us comprehend what we are reading.

Instructor Models and Demonstrates: (I do)

Include key statements you will use to model fluency.
I know that good readers use phrasing when they read orally and silently. I am going to model for you
today why it is so important to use phrasing so that you can comprehend what you are reading. Listen
to me as I read a passage from the Victory or Death letter by William Barret Travis. When I am done
reading I will share my thinking with you about my use of phrasing.
Read selected passage. Read without phrasing or use of any punctuation.

Fellow citizens & compatriotsI am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa
AnnaI have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man.
The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword,
if the fort is takenI have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly
from the walls. I shall never surrender or retreat.

As I was reading this passage, it was very hard for me to understand what I was reading about because
I was reading just words and not phrases. I didnt even pay attention to the punctuation. I know if I
read this way silently, I will be unable to comprehend the text.
Now let me read it again. I will use phrasing which means to read words like they are connected.
When I am done reading, I will ask you to share with me what you noticed about my phrasing as I
read.

Guided Practice: (We do)

Include opportunities for students to engage in guided practice with the fluency instructional task.
Now you are going to help me. We are going to read the same passage again, but this time I have color
coded the text to help us see the phrases. Our goal while we are reading together is to use phrasing
which means to read words like they are connected.

Independent Practice: (You do)

Include opportunities for students to engage in independent practice with the fluency instructional
tasks.
As you are working today with your buddy reader, I want you to think about phrasing. You need to
state your goal before you read. I will model this for you.
Im practicing phrasing today. Phrasing means to read words like they are connected so I can
comprehend the text.
Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character,
to come to our aid, with all dispatchThe enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt
increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to
sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor
& that of his countryVictory or Death.
