Looking Forward to an Exciting Season
Welcome to a new cricket season. We hope that all our members, Senior, Vice-Patrons, Junior
and their parents along with our Social members will have another very enjoyable season with
some excellent cricket either as players or spectators. Although cricket is, in itself, a summer
activity, there has been much to be done around the Club during the winter so that everything
is now ready for the start of the season. Machines had to be serviced, ground maintenance
undertaken, fund raising events held and all the administration and planning that goes into
making Tynemouth CC one of the best Clubs in the area; this work simply never stops.
Indoor practices have been held over the winter to help develop the skills of our junior
members and we have had great interest shown with large numbers attending every session.
This year we have started an under 8 session at King Edward School, which has proved a
popular addition. I am also pleased to report some of our older junior members have completed
their coaching qualifications, with Ben Richardson, Richie Straughan and Andrew Davison
adding to the club’s ability to deliver quality coaching to our young players. These
qualifications are a big commitment for all involved and I cannot thank enough those who
commit so much time to provide opportunities for others.
The club continues to work actively within the community. This year we will be delivering the
last year of the Chance to Shine programme through our Club Development Manager Rebecca
Ayton and Stephen Davison. We will again be working with King Edward, Christchurch,
Spring Gardens, Preston Grange, Cullercoats and Whitehouse primary schools. To ensure the
programme leaves a sustainable infrastructure, Rebecca will do further teacher training in the
schools to leave a trained teacher in every school. The winter has also seen a programme aimed
at Years 3 and 4 in Primary Schools under the banner “Spirit of Cricket”. This has delivered
cricket lessons with an emphasis on the Social & Emotional Aspects of Learning required
under the national curriculum. This has attracted funding from the Criminal Justice Board and
has seen over 500 children in 10 schools benefit from the programme. Such is the impact of
this initiative that we have been commissioned by North Tyneside Council to extend the
community programme in 2010/11 under the council’s Widening Horizon’s programme, one of
two pilot projects; such is the standing of our community work. My congratulations and thanks
to Di Brown, Rebecca Ayton and Stephen Davison for enabling this to happen.
In addition, we have continued to explore the possibilities of introducing a second pitch along
with changing facilities on the field behind the existing pavilion. King’s School have
understandably been concentrating on their new indoor facility and we are unable to progress
the matter until the school make some strategic decisions about their facility needs. However,
we continue to invest in the infrastructure of the club. Last year we saw the benefit of £6000
worth of drainage work carried out over the winter to deal with the flooding problems. This
season we introduce the club’s first electronic scoreboard which will be known as “The Fred
McCree Scoreboard” in memory of Fred’s long association with the club. This has been paid
for by the generosity of club members and the efforts of juniors at a recent backpack. Can I
thank all those involved in making this possible. We are also seeking planning permission to
install lights along the lane and south fence and car park as well as an upgrade to the electricity
supply to the pavilion. These are all long term investments in the club’s future.
Last season a long standing contract to carry out work on Percy Park RFC field ended and this
caused some concern regarding the financial viability of the ground side of the club. I am
pleased to say, thanks to the efforts of the club finding other contracts and some great work on
the bar side over the winter, we have survived the winter financially sound.
The Ground The cricket square and outfield are again starting to look like cricket is about to
break out after the long winter. On 27th & 28th March we ran the NatWest Cricketforce event.
We painted the north fence again, painted the kerb stones and generally give the ground a
spring clean in preparation for the season ahead. Members will also notice a new building, the
“Tuck Shop” kindly paid for by Ian Beever. The aim is to sell tea, coffee and other items at
matches and on practice nights to help raise funds for the club, as well as provide refreshments
to spectators. Any volunteers to help staff this during the summer would be welcome. Please
speak to Andrew Lineham for details.
The Teams In 2010 the Club will be running several league teams: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Xl each
Saturday, with our home games in the third team played on a Sunday at Preston Avenue. It is
hoped this innovation will ensure the “Saturday thirds” will benefit from playing on better
surfaces at Preston Avenue as well as improving income. We will also have a NEPL Sunday
3rd Xl and the Ladies Xl at senior level, as well as U15, U13 and an U11 at Junior level. We
also aim to continue the junior house system at under 11 and under 13 to provide further
competitive opportunities. Teams will also be entered in the Chance to Shine League including
a girls’ team, again with the aim of ensuring the maximum number of young players gain some
form of competitive opportunity. In addition we’ll be competing in the Northumberland
League “C” Division – matches being played every Thursday.
For season 2010 skipper Andrew Smith will again be able to call upon England under 19 all
rounder Scott Borthwick as our Durham contract player. Scott had a tremendous season last
year and proved very popular around the club. We will also be significantly strengthened by
the addition of Pakistan Test Match fast bowler Shahid Nazir The second eleven have Chris
Beever at the helm and he will look to blend the youth and experience at his disposal. Paul
Coates returns to the role of third team Saturday captain in the Northumberland League.
Our first league matches are scheduled for the 24th of April against Stockton with the First
team at home. The Harbour Cup match against South Shields was held last weekend.
Junior practices for under 15s started on Wednesday 14th April at 6pm with the Under 11s on
Friday 16th at 5.15pm and under 13s at 6.45pm. Girls’ under 13 sessions will run at 4pm on
Fridays, starting 23rd April.
Events throughout the season We are pleased to announce that the Events Committee have
already set in place a number of dates for your diary. Please pick up match programmes and
keep your eyes out for the calendar of events. Remember these are all organised by volunteers
to help raise funds for the club so we can continue to invest in our future. Other main events
for the diary are the Tynemouth Beer Festival to be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday 16th
– 18th September and the family firework night, which is on Saturday November 6th this year.
The Annual General Meeting This was held on 3rd February 2010. Russell Perry was re-
elected as Chairman with Iain Purdy taking over as Treasurer. A number of other officials were
re-elected, and the Management Committee welcomed Judith Richardson to its ranks. Several
positions were left vacant at the meeting but subsequently filled. I am delighted to confirm
Anthony turner has taken on the role of Fixture Secretary, Graeme Hallam as Second Team
Captain and Paul Coates as Third team Saturday captain.

Harbour Cup Victory gets Tynemouth’s Season off to Winning Start

Tynemouth’s First XI got their season off to a winning start with a 73 runs victory over South
Shields in the Harbour Cup at Preston Avenue. South Shields captain Matthew Muchall won
the toss and inserted Tynemouth. Openers Dan Young and Iain Purdy added 50 for the first
wicket before both fell in quick succession to Quinn. However, Durham Contract Player Scott
Borthwick then played on to Watson for only 14 runs. The remainder of the Tynemouth
innings was dominated by captain Andrew Smith who made an impressive 34. Smith’s innings
was significant in helping Tynemouth post a total of 144-8 from their 40 overs. There were two
wickets each for Quinn, Watson and Embleton.

Tynemouth’s bowlers simply dominated the visitors reply. Opener Elliott was bowled for only
1 by young David Hymers. Andrew Smith then came into the attack and took a wicket with his
first ball, having Dorothy caught at cover for 13. Smith then bowled opening batsman Marshall
for 15 to put his side into a commanding position. Spinner Phillip Morse then accounted for
both Watson and Rainbow; the latter well stumped by 18 year old Greg Hollins. Morse’s spin
partner Jamie Coates then removed Shaw and N. Watson caught respectively at first slip and
keeper for only 2 runs. With Dan Young bowling Embleton for 16, and taking a caught and
bowled off Hale, the end was then near. The innings finally petered out when Muchall was
victim of a careless run out without scoring, to leave South Shields 71 all out. Of the
Tynemouth bowlers, Smith finished with 2-10, Morse 2-12, Coates 2-6 and Young 2-7. This
impressive start augers well for the challenge of the Premiership which starts on Saturday
with Tynemouth entertaining Stockton.

It is almost 1000 years since the beer making virtues of Burton's spring water was discovered
by the Monks of Burton Abbey. The spring water does not come from the River Trent, it is rain
water that has fallen on the surrounding hills, and percolated down through gypsum beds,
forming an underground stream on the valley floor. It is these trace elements of gypsum
(calcium sulphate) which help to make a clearer, brighter bitter. We collect our natural spring
water from several wells on site at our brewery. Throughout the world other brewers have to
artificially 'Burtonise' their brewing water in order to compensate for the misfortune of not
being based in Burton-upon-Trent, the home of British Brewing.
