Pharmacy

You’re sick; you have a bad headache, cough, sneezing, shivers, and a sore throat. You

head to the doctors and sit in the waiting room for a half hour, then they finally call you in and

the doctor prescribes you Zithromax and it’s off to the nearest pharmacy. You get to the

pharmacy and wait until your prescription is filled and head out the door.

Pharmacy Techs play a very important role in people’s everyday lives. We perform the

dispensing of medication which is used on highly effective products and consultations (Bereau

of Labor Statistics, 2009). Consultations are providing more understandings about the

medication given, and the side effects (Merriam Webster). Some other responsibilities include

answering the phone, operating cash registers, and may be required to lift heavy boxes.

The pharmaceutical industry began to take shape in the early 1900’s. It was then in the

later 19th century that the federal government started to regulate prescription drugs. The pure

Food and Drug ACT (Moore) was required that all medicine manufactures and companies that

sold drugs were to be truthful in their labels.

One of the very first pain killers to be marketed in tablet form was Aspirin. Aspirin is one

of the most popular medications to treat headaches and to relieve pain in today’s society. It

was invented by Felix Hoffman in 1897, when he was trying to relieve his father who was in

pain with arthritis. (Boyer, 2001)

Upon graduation you will receive your Diploma in Pharmacy. There are quite a few steps

in finding the perfect place that suits you. The first step in finding a career for your chosen field

would be picking a location. Ever hear the phrase “Location, location, location”?

Pharmacists are needed in various place settings. You could be wanted in hospitals,

long-term care facilities, and community pharmacies. The working conditions for this profession

are most favorable by just about everybody; it’s clean, organized and well lit. Pharmacists wear

gloves and white coats to protect themselves. Although pharmacy seems to be easy, there are

some downfalls just like everything else. You’re always on your feet, and depending on where

you work you may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

There are many factors to key in to determine your salary. Having a higher level of

education can make you a better candidate for the job. A certification in pharmacy assures your

employer that you are suitable, and you meet the high standards for professional practice

(Pharmacy Technician Salary Information). There is always room to grow in pharmacy, in fact

that is one of our primary goals. We want to strive to deal with our patients on a more personal

level. More experience means more money.

Between the year 2008 and 2018 the demand for pharmacy technicians are said to be in

high demand and the employment are expected to rise by 25% (Bereau of Labor Statistics,

2009). I believe that more and more people will be interested in the Health Care setting

because it’s growing so fast. With technology growing bigger there will be much more effective

medication that people will have to handle in the near future.

Researching this career has taught me a lot more than I anticipated. Some things that

were surprising to me were the high demands for pharmacy technicians; because of the new

advancements in medicine more people will obtain prescription drug coverage. The information

I have obtained will be useful in the future and will help to better myself in exploring this

exciting career.

I think that the pharmaceutical industry is perfect for me. I am a caring, compassionate

person which makes this career path perfect for me because I get to deal with people in a

delicate yet professional manner. It seems like a fast and challenging environment that is

always presenting something new and exciting. There are endless possibilities in advancement

in this chosen career. I think medicine plays a very important role in millions of people lives. The

thought of this gives me great self satisfaction in my career choice.
