History of St.

Philip

St. Philip the Evangelist

was organized in 1887
by a group of Black
Episcopalians whose call
was "Doing Mission for
Jesus in Anacostia." They
met in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert F. Smith
on Howard Road S.E.

On March 25, 1896, the Chapel of St. Philip the

Evangelist, now in Douglas Hall on Martin Luther
King Road, joined the Episcopal Diocese of
Washington.

In 1977, St. Philip moved to its current location on

14th and U Streets Southeast.

In 1999 – 2000 the premises were completely

renovated then dedicated to the Glory of God.

In January 2001, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington

permitted the Chapel of St. Philip to organize as a
Parish. In January 2002, the Chapel was established as
the parish of St. Philip the Evangelist Episcopal
Church.

On April 15,
2002, the first
Rector and Vestry
of St. Philip the
Evangelist
Episcopal Church
were installed by
Bishop Jane
Dixon.
