ELEMENTARY KIDS & FAMILIES

This resource is designed to allow your family to have time in Gods Word
BEFORE your children attend church. Because Gods plan is for parents to be
the primary spiritual nurturers of their childrens faith, we want YOU to be the
one to introduce this part of The Big God Story to them.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hosanna means Save us or Rescue us.
Palm Sunday is also called the Triumphal Entry.
The palm branch was a symbol of Jewish patriotism. It represented victory for
the Jewish people.
Palms were used in decorating Jewish coins, buildings and even synagogues.
They were prominently displayed during many of their major feasts and festivals.

REMEMBER VERSE

JESUS IS KING OF KINGS

Triumphal Entry
Matthew 21:117
The people of Israel had long awaited their coming Messiah. From beginning to
end, the Old Testament records the history of Gods people awaiting the arrival of
their promised Savior. They envisioned a king who would come with a sword and
make Israel the leader of all the nations. Their hope for this sort of Messiah is
evident in the way they welcomed Jesus on what we refer to as Palm Sunday.

JUST FOR FUN

This week, give each child the opportunity to become King or Queen for the
day. Allow them to choose their favorite meal or dessertmaybe even both. Let
them pick their favorite television show or play their favorite game. Find ways to
give them the royal treatment. After children have had the opportunity to be King
or Queen, tell them you are going to read a part of The Big God Story in which
Jesus revealed that He was the long awaited King. Together, read Matthew 21:1
11. Pray together thanking God for sending Jesus to be our King.

YOUNGER KIDS
Talk about how being a king, queen, prince or princess may seem like an ideal
life, but how all people, even royalty, also can face trials of many kinds. Remind
children that while Jesus is receiving a good kind of royal treatment on Palm
Sunday, in less than one week, things will be very different for Jesus.

OLDER KIDS
Talk about how, to many, Jesus seemed an unlikely Messiah. Jesus brought
revelation instead of revenge and called people to love their enemies instead of
conquering them. Ask your children if there are peers they struggle to love or be
kind to, and talk about how Jesus might react in the same situation.

Lesson 3

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
John 17:3

TEACHABLE MOMENTS
After reading Scripture, discuss the following together:
Tell your children that Gods people were looking for a king to come and save
them. They wanted Jesus to be a warrior kingthey didnt understand that He
had come to bring peace and lay down His life for them.
Instead of bringing a sword, Jesus brought a message of peace and humility for
true salvation.
Ask your children: What would you have done if youd been there that day?

BLESSING
For more information about blessing your child see the Blessing section in
HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource.
A blessing to pray over your child:
(Childs name), May you know that Jesus is the King of Kings. May you be
full of joy and praise because He alone is the King over all the earth.
