Lesson Plan Outline

Introduction
• Learning the colors of objects
• Length of Lesson (estimated)- 30 minutes
• VA Standards of Learning K.4: The student will investigate and understand that the
position, motion, and physical properties of an object can be described. a) colors of objects.

Learning Objectives
Students will:
• identify 8 basic colors including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and white.

Teaching and Learning Sequence


Introduction/Anticipatory Set
• Introduce the primary eight colors by reading aloud the book Planting a Rainbow by Lois
Elhert. Point out each color as we read the story.
• Have a paper bag full of different colored items/objects. After reading the story, have students
close their eyes and reach in the bag and pull out one item. The student will then say the
name of the color of the item.

Lesson Development
• Hand out color review worksheet. I will review the colored objects on the worksheet with the
written word of the color with the students.
• Hand out record worksheet and crayons to students.
• Tell students they will go on a hunt in the classroom to find objects of all 8 colors.
• Tell students to record their findings by drawing a picture of each item they find. They should
then color it the appropriate color with a crayon. Tell students to find only one item/object for
each color.

Closure
• When the students have finished their color hunt, they will return to their seats. As a class,
students will volunteer to share their objects that they found in the classroom. Ask the
students “Does anyone have a red object that they found and would like to share with the
class?” (Do this for each color).
• Hand out a flower color recognition review worksheet.
• Review the 8 primary colors by completing the flower worksheet.
• Students will complete the worksheet by coloring each flower with a crayon. If students need
• Review the color worksheet with the students, going over each color again and saying the
appropriate name.
• Explain to students their homework for the night. Students are to create their own grab bags
of colored items. Tell students to look around their house for an item of every color we
discussed in class and that is on their worksheet. They must be able to fit all items in a brown
paper bag and bring them to school the next day.

Homework
• Students will create their own grab bag and bring in small objects of all the 8 colors. Students will
look for objects in their house. Students must be able to fit all items in a brown paper bag and
bring them to school the next day.

Assessment
Formative
• Observe students going on the color hunt.

• Students will complete the review worksheet.
• Students will be given an oral “Name the color” test. Teacher will have 8 objects of different
colors and ask the students to orally name the color of the 8 objects. All 8 objects will be the
same for each student. Record students answers on a checklist.
