Spanking and Corporal Punishment 2

Abstract

Some parents believe that discipline is something much more important and extensive than just
the physical force designed to teach children right from wrong. There is a wide range of different
methods of spanking. Most children don’t know when spanking goes too far to the point of
abuse. Views of the respondents are molded by their childhood. Corporal punishment has been
linked to children becoming violent adults. The negative effects that slavery had on the Black
community are a serious one because the growth of a black child is more uncertain than that of
another race.
Spanking and Corporal Punishment 3

Introduction

I. Description of problem- In this paper the topic I have researched Spanking and
Corporal Punishment. This issue affects many people with varied results.
Corporal punishment varies in intensity from spanking with the end result not
causing physical injury to physical abuse which is extreme physical force that
imposes bodily injury. The methods of spanking and corporal punishment vary,
but is it healthy for the child being disciplined with violence?

The respondents for this research paper where either student’s in a historically black or apart of
the African American community by race or affiliation. When spanking transpire in a
circumstance of strong overall emotional support for the child it does not appear to supply a
major increase in behavior problems. But without such support in place negative behavior
problems tend to occur in response to increased spanking.

Some parents believe that discipline is something much more important and extensive than just
the physical force designed to teach children right from wrong. With a majority of the
respondents being African American the history of that race should be considered because of the
slavery history and its impact on the present. The negative effects that slavery had on the Black
community are a serious one because the growth of a black child is more uncertain than that of
another race because of the injustice and cruelty that this race dealt with in many levels due to
the slave era.

Where people with a criminal background or have troubles with the police regularly spanked or
experienced corporal punishment as a child? Because Corporal punishment has been linked to
children becoming violent adults. A relationship between childhood histories of insensitive
discipline and adult psychopathology exists. Parent’s physical punishment relates to some
portions of a child’s emotional well being even without identified physical abuse. They results of
this research paper should reinforce the statements in this Introduction.

II. Attributes to be measured- The research is to assess the opinions of Tuskegee

University students about Spanking & Corporal punishment. There was a ten
question survey with question relating to the subject of spanking and corporal
punishment. Corporal punishment is the intentional infliction of pain on the body
for the purpose of punishment. Examples include spanking, slapping, punching,
hitting with objects, pinching, and forcing to stand for long periods of time

There are ten different variables and values measured. The Age is used to narrow the range of
answers from the respondents. The Classification is for the highest year of college induction the
respondents have at the time of the survey. Gender is used to get an understanding of the
differences between the two sexes. Questions are asked to understand opinion, attitudes, beliefs,
values, perception, and feelings toward the subject of spanking and corporal punishment.
Spanking and Corporal Punishment 4

The first question asked is Do you think it is okay to spank children as a means of discipline?
The second question for the respondents was did your parents spank you as a means of
discipline? The third question should parents be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline
their children is an overview of the feelings of the two previous questions asked. The fourth
question asked Does corporal punishment work better than other disciplinary methods that don't
involve physical pain is to understand if the other questions make difference with other
disciplinary methods introduced .The fifth question Have you ever been in trouble with the
police is to track behavior of the respondents with the law. The sixth question Overall, do you
think that you deserved the punishment that your parents/guardians used on you when you were
a child reinforces the current views of the respondents by revisiting there upbringing. The
seventh and final how likely do you think you will spank your children as a means of discipline
is to see how their experience with spanking and corporal with affect their children.

III. Hypotheses- In this paper I expect to find and label several points that I have
gathered to form my hypotheses. When spanking transpire in a circumstance of
strong overall emotional support for the child it does not appear to supply a major
increase in behavior problems. But without such support in place negative
behavior problems tend to occur in response to increased spanking. These are all
statements that will be researched in this paper with different ranges in
respondents. Some parents believe that discipline is something much more
important and extensive than just the physical force designed to teach children
right from wrong. But is this right for the child in life? Once a person is
introduced to violence the way one responds to it is different in different cases.

There is a wide range of different methods of spanking but in the Black community the
effect are different because of the history of this race of people. The negative effects that
slavery had on the Black community are a serious one because the growth of a black
child is more uncertain than that of another race because of the injustice and cruelty that
this race dealt with in many levels due to the slave era. This statement is important to get
a better understanding of the culture of African Americans.

Corporal punishment has been linked to children becoming violent adults. So with this
understanding the history of corporal punishment and spanking would shed light on
whether this is true in college students and member of the African Community. Parent’s
physical punishment relates to some portions of a child’s emotional well being even
without identified physical abuse due to the violence inflected on the child. When
spanking transpire in a circumstance of strong overall emotional support for the child it
does not appear to supply a major increase in behavior problems. Spanking and corporal
punishment has a large effect on the growth of people in many different aspects of life.

IV. Rationale- The rationale for my research is that the African American community
history shows that spanking is more acceptable than other races. Due to the
Spanking and Corporal Punishment 5

history of the race which overcame slavery. The negative effects that slavery had
on the Black community are a serious one because the growth of a black child is
more uncertain than that of another race because of the injustice and cruelty that
this race dealt with in many levels due to the slave era. With the stereo types of
the African American community being violent and uneducated the findings in
this research should dispel those notions. The effects of spanking and corporal
punishment even though it is physical violence might not have a negative effect
on the respondent if the situation is right. Corporal punishment has been linked to
children becoming violent adults but is it from the physical violence of spanking
or the effects of bad methods of parenting. Some parents believe that discipline is
something much more important and extensive than just the physical force
designed to teach children right from wrong. With the proper environment the
punishment may lead to the respondent respecting authority or the respondent
may go the opposite route and rebel against authority figures. Spanking is an age-
old tradition in Black America and many stable and successful African-Americans
have experienced this type of discipline. The disciplines received growing up
shapes a person but that is not all the factors that make a person act the way they
do. Other factors such as social interaction and world perceptive also shape a
person’s attitude towards what’s right and wrong.

Gender

The gender of people who filled out the survey on spanking and corporal punishment showed
more females took the survey than males. With more women taking the survey than men the data
might show the importance of spanking and corporal punishment among the future and current
mothers of the world. The maternal instincts of women are much different than that of a male
because the woman carries the child for nine months and has the power of bringing a life into the
world. Men can only take lives women give life with child bearing. The bond of the mother and
child is generally closer than males because there carrying the child in their body and go through
physical pain unimaginable to males. With more women answering, the views toward spanking
may lead to less spanking and corporal punishment among the next generation because women
are less violent than males in most cases. Even though there are less male respondents it is not
fair to say that all males will be more inclined to spank their children because the way people are
raised varies from state to state or even neighborhoods. Must time the views of the respondents
are molded by their childhood. With the most of respondents being of African American descent
the data of views on corporal punishment and spanking is very different from White views on
spanking and corporal because of the different histories of the two races. African Americans
were slaves so the culture of how children were disciplined is different because the base on how
they were able to raise the children was different over the decades. The overall view of the
respondents will shed light into the methods of punishment that people of color have toward
raising and molding their children.

Age of respondents

The age of the respondents is divided into four groups. With a lot of the respondents being
college students or of college age the largest number of respondents is in the 21 to 24 in age
range. The second largest group of respondents is the less than 21 age range because as
previously stated the survey was filled out by respondents of college age either attending or high
school graduate. With the most of respondents being of African American descent the data of
views on corporal punishment and spanking is very different from White views on spanking and
corporal because of the different histories of the two races. The dominant age groups were born
in the mid eighties or early nineties so their opinions may vary from those of the older
respondents due to the time era. The differences of the time periods the respondents were born
can mean a lot because of the overall views of what is fit parenting and what abuse is defined as
has changed over the decades. African Americans were slaves so the culture of how children
were disciplined is different because the base on how they were able to raise the children was
different over the decades. They older the respondents views are to be analyzed in context to the
era on which they were disciplined in because of the views of a more conservative time when
spanking and corporal punishment was deemed as the norm for society in the ways of
disciplining children at this time. Corporal punishment is very rare in schools over the last
decade plus but for parents of the two dominate age ranges in this survey experienced corporal
punishment and spanking in their child hood because of the views and norms at the time deemed
this as a safe form of punishment.

Classification of respondents

This pie graph is of the classifications of respondents for the issue of spanking and corporal
punishment. With the most of respondents being of African American descent the data of views
on corporal punishment and spanking is very different from White views on spanking and
corporal because of the different histories of the two races. The largest number of the
respondents happened to be seniors with 37%. The smallest number of respondents where vet
school students with 1%. Juniors are the second dominate group with 18%. After the large
number of respondents that are of senior classification there is a two percent decrease in the
number of respondents to represent the view points of the younger classifications such as
freshman and sophomore year students .The dominant age groups were born in the mid eighties
or early nineties so. The opinions may vary from those of the older respondents due to the time
era. The data for the vet school students is very narrow because the number of respondents is
very low with such a small number of respondents in this classification to chose from the views
of the respondents may not reflect the overall view of people of that classification. The
differences in the years the respondents were born means a lot because of the overall views of
what is fit parenting and what abuse is defined as has changed over the decades. Since the
freshman, sophomores, and juniors are well represented in the number of respondents with a two
percent increase from the freshman to juniors before making a 19% increase to the seniors. The
number of respondents who answered the survey where mostly in the four year program of
college. The older the respondent the more mature the answers tend to be because of the growth
of a young adult into an adult.

82%

This pie graph show the percentage of the respondents who have been in trouble with police. A
large number of respondents with an astounding 82% have never been in trouble with the police.
With a small number of respondents having trouble with police it seems that the discipline the
respondents received as a child was not damaging in the sense that there not in trouble with the
police at a high number. Corporal punishment has been linked to children becoming violent
adults. So the punishment of the 18% may have leaded them to act out and misbehave toward
authority figures. Corporal punishment by fathers increases the probability of criminal behavior
by their sons. Corporal punishment by mothers increases rates of violence in sons. With that
statement it is unfair to say because 90% of the respondents where spanked and only 18% felt the
negative effects of spanking leading them toward trouble with the police. Physical discipline is
also connected to behavioral and psychological problems in children and young people. Less
than twenty percent of the respondents have trouble with police, do they advocate spanking and
corporal punishment probably not because their memories of the feelings they felt due to
receiving physical punishment may have not been a pleasant memory. The negative effects that
slavery had on the Black community are a serious one because the growth of a black child is
more uncertain than that of another race because of the injustice and cruelty that this race dealt
with in many levels due to the slave era. I’m surprised at the low number of people to have been
in trouble with the police due to the high number of people spanked as a child. But with the
largest numbers of respondents not having trouble with the police it is safe to say that the
discipline they received trained them to respect authority such as the police.

This pie graph is in response to the question did your parents spank u as a means of discipline.
This graph shows the different way the respondents were disciplined growing up. Some parents
believe that discipline is something much more important and extensive than just the physical
force designed to teach children right from wrong. With 90% percent of the respondents having
been spanked as child it’s clear to see that their parents are from a time era that taught spanking
as a good method of punishment for children. When spanking transpire in a circumstance of
strong overall emotional support for the child it does not appear to supply a major increase in
behavior problems. But without such support in place negative behavior problems tend to occur
in response to increased spanking. The high number of respondents that received spanking as a
means to punishment leads me believe that their views on spanking have been passed down on
from the parents if they received their proper emotional care while and after receiving the
punishment of spanking. Physical discipline is certainly connected to behavioral and
psychological problems in children and young people. With 10% not being spanked as means of
discipline that percent of respondents would not feel the effects of physical discipline leading
them to be less violent because they did not witness violence as a child at the hands of a loved
one. Most brutal and fatal acts of child abuse come from everyday physical discipline. With that
being said a large number of respondents were spanked growing up some of the acts of spanking
may have been extreme and on the border line of abuse. Most children don’t know when
spanking goes too far to the point of abuse. The 90% of respondents that were spanked were the
majority and that shows the use of physical discipline was strong during their youth because it
was well used.

This pie graph is to show how many of the respondents believe parents should be allowed to use
corporal punishment to discipline their children. With 73% of the respondents agreeing that
parents should be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline their children that’s a high
number of respondents. With 10% not being spanked as means of discipline that percent of
respondents I thought would have about the same percentage that don’t believe in spanking but
there is a 27% of respondents who do not agree with the use of corporal punishment. With 90%
percent of the respondents having been spanked as child it’s clear to see that their parents are
from a time era that taught spanking as a good method of punishment for children. But their view
on all physical punishment being good varies because of the way the discipline had an effect on
them as a youth. With a lot of the respondents being college students or of college age the largest
number of respondents is in the 21 to 24 in age range. The second largest group of respondents is
the less than 21 age range so there era of which the views of two largest groups of respondent
on corporal punishment discipline are from the same five year span and probably share the same
views of that time era of time. Corporal punishment is very rare in schools over the last decade
so the number of respondents who deem this punishment fit only experience this by way of the
parents. Their parents were taught this by the norms of their time and passed it on to their
children. The parents must have had the proper amount of love and care passed on to the child
receiving the corporal punishment because a large number of the respondents show that the f
college age agree that parents should be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline their
children.

This pie graph shows the number of respondents who beliefs on whether it is okay to spank

circumstance of strong overall emotional support for the child it does not appear to supply a
major increase in behavior problems. But without such support in place negative behavior
problems tend to occur in response to increased spanking. The high number of respondents that
received spanking as a means to punishment leads me to believes that their views on spanking
have been passed down on from the parents if they received their proper emotional care while

youth were the majority and that shows the use of physical discipline was strong during their
youth because it was well used this has been passed on to their kids with the views of spanking
being okay with the same percentage of respondents who received spanking as a form of
punishment agreeing that spanking is okay with the exact same number of respondents agreeing
that spanking is still okay. The views of the respondents show that even though other data shows
that the respondents are split in their views on how effective physical punishment is in this graph
that contradicts there view points on whether corporal punishment work better than other
disciplinary methods that don’t involve physical pain because in that pie graph because 49% of

unacceptable. With 10% not being spanked as means of discipline that percent of respondents
that number grows in the views of spanking and physical discipline as being harmful to children
and there are better methods to discipline children. Because of the 90% percent of the
respondents having been spanked as child it’s the views on this differ when it comes to the belief
that punishment work better than other disciplinary methods that don’t involve physical pain.
With 73% of the respondents agreeing that parents should be allowed to use corporal punishment

a black child is more uncertain than that of another race because of the injustice and cruelty that
this race dealt with in many levels due to the slave era. So with that being said the black
community has made strides in everything discipline being one because the growth of a black
child has more studies and methods that have been researched that prove that physical
punishment has been linked to children becoming violent adults. Physical discipline is also
connected to behavioral and psychological problems in children and young people that lead to
finding alternative methods of discipline a child to get the best out of them.

Summary and Conclusion

After all the graphs and data into the research on spanking and corporal punishment I have gathered. The
differences of the time periods the respondents were born can mean a lot because of the overall
views of what is fit parenting and what abuse is defined as has changed over the decades.
Physical discipline is also connected to behavioral and psychological problems in children and
young people that lead to finding alternative methods of discipline a child to get the best out of
them. This research shows that even though the respondents have been physically disciplined
that does not mean they are more likely to be violent compared to those who were not physically
disciplined growing up.

The views of the respondents show that even though other data shows that the respondents are
split in their views on how effective physical punishment is contradicts there view points on
whether corporal punishment work better than other disciplinary methods that don’t involve
physical pain because in that pie graph because 49% of the respondents believing that that
physical discipline is acceptable. 51% of respondents believe that that physical discipline is
unacceptable. The two oldest groups of respondents had the lowest percents of respondents to
have trouble with the police which where the 25-40 group of respondents and the 41-54 group of
respondents.

The number of respondents who answered the survey where mostly in the four year program of
college. The older the respondent the more mature the answers tend to be because of the growth

yes that spanking is a good form of punishment with over 25% of the respondents voting this
way. All the respondents from graduate school chose yes that spanking was a good form of
punishment for discipline of children. The 90% of respondents that were spanked were the
majority and that shows the use of physical discipline was strong during their youth because it
was well used.

When spanking transpire in a circumstance of strong overall emotional support for the child it
does not appear to supply a major increase in behavior problems. But without such support in
place negative behavior problems tend to occur in response to increased spanking. The high
number of respondents that received spanking as a means to punishment leads me to believes
that their views on spanking have been passed down on from the parents if they received their
proper emotional care while and after receiving the punishment of spanking. With 73% of the
respondents agreeing that parents should be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline
their children the numbers begin to change to reflect the teachings of this era.
Spanking and Corporal Punishment 23

The younger the respondents classification the less likely they are to favor spanking as means to
discipline their children. But for some reason the views of all the graduate school believed that
spanking is a good form of punishment to discipline children. I’m surprised at the low number of
people to have been in trouble with the police due to the high number of people spanked as a
child. The younger the respondents answered the more likely they did have trouble with the
police more but young people seem to have more trouble with the police in any time era because
they are figuring out the way things work in the world. But with the largest numbers of
respondents not having trouble with the police it is safe to say that the discipline they received
trained them to respect authority such as the police.
