Region of Attica

he Region of Attica focuses on the sector of tourism, as it is considered to be

an essential lever for growth, for speeding up the economic recovery and overcoming the crisis. Moreover, tourism is considered to be a crucial factor which
can help combat unemployment. In the framework of formulating its Strategic Plan for
the following period 2016-2020, the Region of Attica emphasizes on promoting ttica
as a short break destination.
Given the fact that the Region of Attica represents one of the most gifted areas of the
Mediterranean, with unparallel natural beauty and great civilization, our basic goal is
to become the institution that promotes a package of attractive and exciting new travel
products in the international tourist market. This means that the Region of Attica is not
only a city break destination; it can become a short break destination. Attica is worth
visiting all year round, thanks to its mild climate and to the famous Attica light. In surplus, it has many hidden places and beauties to offer to its visitors, like the Attica coast
line and its islands gems:
First of all Aegina, just a stone throws away form the port of Piraeus, where history
is ever present and is an ideal choice for a short city escape or holidays. Agistri is a true
paradise for hiking and biking lovers and is the perfect spot for those seeking for a deserted
sandy beach and a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Poros, the birthplace of Theseus, is of
spectacular natural beauty. Walking around its narrow streets, visitors realise its historical

significance. Hydra has been listed as a preserved monument of architecture and history. Cars are strictly prohibited. Its relaxed charm, stunning architectural masterpieces,
beautiful stone paved streets and picturesque narrow paths offer visitors a truly unique
experience all year round. The island of Spetses, with its elegant style, is distinguished
by a noble architecture, thoughtful town planning and a marvellous promenade near the
old port, with lush landscapes and crystal-blue seas. Kythera, with the venetian allure
still on display and the imposing medieval castle at the islands capital Hora, has a lot to
offer: picturesque villages, pristine beaches and idyllic natural landscapes. All the islands
offer excellent cuisine, based on traditional regional products.
The Region of Attica offers a variety of different destinations and routes and is an ideal
destination for every visitor all year round, whether visiting just for a few days or for a
longer period. It offers excellent hotel facilities for every budget and airport connection
with many countries of the world. Last but not least, a visit to Attica combines the ancient
and contemporary civilization, offering exciting nightlife, concerts, theatrical plays, an
excellent culinary scene with many delicacies, great shopping as well as visits to museums
and ancient ruins, walks to picturesque neighbourhoods and relaxing at fantastic beaches,
just 30 minutes from the centre of Athens.
So whether you are looking for style and comfort or tradition and history, Attica is the
right place to visit.

Attica is worth visiting all year

round, thanks to its mild climate and
to the famous Attica light

The greek tourism confederation (sete)

he year 2015 was indeed a year full of obstacles, great difficulties and a series of
twists and turns to it. However, tourism proved to be a catalyst for our country.
We went beyond our target which was 26 million arrivals in total and made up
to 14.5 million Euros, thus strengthening the countrys GDP by one more unit.
It is expected that the following year is to play a decisive role for Greek tourism and
the Greek economy as a whole. We are discreetly optimistic that this too, will be a most
positive year. We are all ready to work harder than ever before in order to continue to
support the Greek economy, achieve our goals on not only a private level but also as a
team, so as to contribute to the rise of employment, especially within local communities
and ensure a better future for the generations that will follow.
As a country, we have the critical mass of human resources needed. We also have a unique natural beauty which in itself creates
unforgettable experiences, historical and archaeological sites which
everyone wishes to visit. Furthermore, we are endowed with the
perfect climate which helps extend the tourist season. It is the duty
of all, who are active within the tourist industry, to guard the beau-

ties of our country and allow them to be showcased as they deserve to be in the top
position of global tourism.
In order to further strengthen our competitive advantage of Greek tourism and to
overcome both external factors which influence the demand and the local issues which
prevail, 2016 will have to be a year when we all focus on the people involved in tourism, who on a daily basis act as our true ambassadors, representing the country in the
best possible way. The professionals who let out rooms should be given an incentive
in order to boost the diversity and quality of their services. We should also invest in
the small family businesses and support them so that they can also offer an authentic
and unique experience to those who visit our country. We should reinforce our tourist
agencies and assist them in approaching new markets. We must also
strengthen the link between our destinations and create trustworthy
and modern tourist infrastructure.
With the collaboration of all bodies concerned with Greek tourism, we have no doubt that we will manage to overcome all challenges ahead.

As a country we have a unique

natural beauty which in itself creates
unforgettable experiences to everyone

Hellenic Chamber of Hotels

he year 2015 was truly an amazing year for

Greek tourism and it definitely looks like 2016
has great potential to follow suit. There is no
doubt that Greek tourism is on the rise.
This success justifies the belief of all of us - professionals involved in this field - who right from the beginning of the economic crisis, believed and supported
the idea that tourism is a profession which runs independently, despite the financial situation the country
is suffering, while at the same time, it is the most vital
business operation and the stepping stone for the countrys exit from this depression.
I would like to say something else as regards to this
years positive outlook. Id like to ask all of you, in-

volved in the development of this amazing product

called Greek tourism, not to think of the last two years
as the end of an effort made, but the beginning of a new
challenge. We ought to work with perspective and a
vision and try to ensure the highest possible satisfaction
to the visitors of our country.
I am confident that with all of us working together
with one main goal in mind, which is the upgrading
of tourism, Greece will be ready to offer its visitors an
outstanding product again this year, while at the same
time provide a secure and authentic environment.
For this reason, I would like to invite all of you who
are planning this years vacation, to choose our country
to do so.

he 2015 tourism season showed that Greek tourism not only exceeded the expectations that existed since the beginning of the year, but that it also developed an excellent vitality and brought very satisfying results. Much higher than the international
and regional average development rates and quite higher compared to the competition.
More than 23,6 million arrivals from all continents and parts of the world and 14 billion
euros of direct revenue are goals that have been achieved three years ahead of schedule,
according to the 2021 Growth Roadmap for tourism that SETE- the Greek Tourism Confederation has presented for the future of Greek tourism.
These figures also revealed the important contribution of tourism to the national economy, employment, local economies and societies and to a wide range of other sectors and
professions.
As per incoming tourism, the last tourism season demonstrated the dynamic of new markets, revealed new aspects of our traditional markets, enlightened interesting changes in
trend and upheavals in preferences and products, while it also redefined the relationship
between the demand-driven major players with the supply factors.
This healthy and strong preference for Greece, is the best and most reliable credential that
our country, is always a safe and friendly destination, of unique beauty and culture but also,
rare scenic and natural diversity, at the same time.
Greece is one of the worlds leading travel destinations, combining a wealth of natural

beauty, sea and sun, cultural heritage and a diverse array of unique experiences ranging
from culinary tours to spa and wellness treatments. Our countrys tourism enterprises offer
rates and packages that are excellent value for money. Keen interest from major airlines
and improved air connections, in addition to far more diverse distribution networks for
our tourism product, have already brought results in terms of significantly extending the
tourism season and more.
Greek hotels, in particular, once more lead the resurgence of Greek tourism this season and
according to international guest satisfaction surveys, they have again verified the high level
of services they offer. They can cater for all kinds of requests, from the most demanding
of customers, through all available categories, from luxury to budget and for any kind of
interest or trends.
The Greek economy is on the verge of a heavy structuralreform, with a series of measures
and new proceduresabout to be implemented. Most of these focuson amending legislation
regarding investments andentrepreneurship and cutting bureaucracy in order toprovide
speedier and effective development of publicassets, such as regional airports, harbors and
utilizationof land.
Greek Hoteliers are confident that if these structuralreforms take place in time, in combination with thenew tourism policy axes planned by the Ministry ofTourism, Greek Tourism
can retainhigh rates of growth for the next five years, at least.

The Grande Bretagne Hotel

created a strong Bourgeois mentality, making it equal, or better than
other European establishments.
This very fact contributed to the

inevitably became the prototype for
the development of other hotels.
The Athenian society embraced

ear friends and colleagues

With great pleasure Athens Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association and its
members attend ITB Berlin consistently for almost 30 years. Especially this
year that ITB is due to celebrate its 50th anniversary; Athens comes enhanced. In 2015
Athens re-gained the interest of international visitors remaining at the same time one of
the most affordable capitals in Europe and one of the value for money destinations
for 2016. This was not a coincidence or a years luck. It was the result of combined
efforts taken by private key tourism sector bodies. Athens Hotel Industry supported the
destinationintently, taking initiatives along with the high quality hospitality provided.
The official numbers of our visitors satisfaction (over 96%) is the ideal ambassador
of Athens quality as for hotels infrastructure & services evaluation the score remains
over 8/10 for more than 3 years. A visit to Athens on any occasion is a unique experience but most of all what makes it memorable is the warm hospitality of its people
what we call in Greek filoxenia (this is a crucial element in Athens hospitality
repeatedly appearing to the Annual Tourist Satisfaction Survey that Athens Attica
& Argosaronic Hotel Association is conducting).
Athens is one of the most modern ancient metropolises of Europe that never stays still.
Every visitor - young or older, to every visit, has new things to explore, new aspects
of urban culture to enjoy.
Experiences Athens can offer to visitors are infinite and unique; either you visit on a
business trip or for leisure.
Run the Athens Authentic Marathon (13/11/2016) and feel like a modern hero, walk
up the Acropolis Hill, the backstreets of Plaka and Agora and feel the spirit of ancient

philosophers. Go on a museum hopping with more than 80 museums to choose from

or an island hopping; 5 picturesque islands just a stones throw away from Athens
await you to explore them.
Athens isnt only about monuments and museums, street art is everywhere in the
city center. For the last 3 years Athens became something like a Mecca for Street
Artists, you can easily discover graffiti on your strolls around the city.
Combine an Athens City-break or a business trip with a tour at Atticas wineries,
stroll around vineyards and taste Athens wines along with traditional cheese, seasonal
fruits & local products or book a 5senses journey in the heart of the city through a
food tour.
Athens is on the move also in terms of infrastructure. New hotel units are opening
in the city center and many of the existing units are going under major refurbishment; meeting with cutting edge evolutions in digital technology, eco-hospitality,
accessible tourism etc.
At the same time spotlights of culture & arts are on Stavros Niarchos Foundation
Cultural Center which is a vast development project of the new facilities of the
National Library of Greece (NLG) and the Greek National Opera (GNO), as well as
the creation of the 170,000m Stavros Niarchos Park.
It is almost completed in 2016 and will be in full operation in 2017.
Also these days, Marina Abramovic new participatory performance project is due

Twelve reasons to visit Greece

One of the main objectives of Greek tourism is the prolongation of the tourist season.

EDHATTA has mobilized all forces at its

disposal to make the goal of twelve months
tourism in Greece a reality, while considering
as essential the channelling of the efforts of
every entity in the country into this direction.
FEDHATTA has already created Ddeka (Twelve), a
dynamic proposal aiming at enriching our tourist product and prolonging the tourist season, which comprises
thematic and special interest activities as well as the
promotion of lesser-known tourist destinations.
It is a sectoral initiative from which new tourism products will emerge for our country, a necessary element
to redefine Greece as a favorite destination for international tourists, while at the same time signaling the start
of our initiatives and actions.
It is our aspiration for the inexhaustible program of
activities of Ddeka, after being enriched and processed, to become a toolbox to be utilized not only by
the Greek tour operators and travel agents, but also by
their international networks.
It is common knowledge that tour operators and travel
agents are, internationally, the producers and distribution network of the tourism product, being principally
engaged in the composition of the individual tourist
products, as well as their promotion, advertising and
sale.
The topics of Ddeka comprise a wealth of information for Greek and foreign travellers, who, in this way,
will find out that Greece has indeed beautiful beaches
and sun (two natural treasures that have made our country known all over the world), but can also offer unique
experiences due to its unique nature, mountains, ski
resorts, the lesser-known destinations, tradition, art etc.
In this way, a vision of many years, the twelve month
tourism for our country, will soon become reality.
In more detail, the action plan is as follows:
We celebrate Christmas and New Year since November! Pilot program Ddeka started with the two
large cities that have the potential to support tourism all
twelve months of the year, Athens and Thessaloniki, and
it expands the boundaries to the islands of the Saronic
gulf, as well as to Meteora. We celebrate Christmas
and New Year since the beginning of November, with
musical bands in the streets of these two major municipalities, with lightings, street performances and offers
and special fares by hotels and airlines.
The Olympic Legends. In the most important athletic
stadiums (Ancient Olympia, Olympic Athletic Center
of Athens, Panathenaic Stadium (the Kallimarmaro)
the visitors of our country will be able to participate in
the simpler Olympic sports, following the original ritual
of the Olympic Games, and earn the honorary olive
branch of the winner. Thus, the traveler to our country

will partake of the rich Greek athletic heritage.

Partnerships. Important people from different backgrounds join forces for the implementation of Ddeka:
the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, university
professors of Astronomy and Archaeology, the Nature
Conservation Company, scientific partners, because
we must guarantee the validity of the information that
reaches the traveller as well
as the professional.
Promotion. Upon completion, Ddeka will be
promoted by the Federation
of Hellenic Associations of
Travel and Tourist Agencies (FedHATTA) and their
respective members in all
tourist fairs and roadshows
wordwide, thus ensuring the
continuity and consistency of
its communication, as well as
the fact that its activation and
practical implementation will
begin the soonest possible, as
an extra action for the international promotion of Greece.
The twelve themes presenting the Greek tourism product
are the following:
Religious and Pilgrimage
Tourism in Greece. Recording of all historic monasteries and churches of Christendom. Footsteps of St.
Paul in Greece. Memories of the writing of the Book
of Revelations and the journey of John and the Virgin
Mary. Recording of the Jewish synagogues and memorials and of monuments of Muslim interest. Because
tourism unites and concerns us all.
Athletic Tourism Activities in Nature. Greece gave
form to athleticism and it is time to remember the value
of fair play. Recording of all places where one can
enjoy activities in nature.
Sight-seeing Tourism / Twelve Gods of
Mount Olympus. Indicative recording of
temples and oracles built by the Greeks to
honor the twelve gods of Olympus. Twelve
plus One: Zeus, Hera, Hestia, Poseidon,
Demeter, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Ares,
Hephaestus, Hermes, Athena and Dionysus.
Places were worshiping ceremonies were
performed. The Greek Tradition waiting to be explored.
This program has been compiled with the help of a professor of Archaeology.

Greek Yachting and Cruise. The way to visit the

small and big islands of Greece, well-known and lessknown, by means until now thought to be expensive and
inapproachable. Your communication with the travel

ready to offer you unforgettable experiences.

multifaceted. When we say Athens, obviously, we mean its people, those who walk
its streets, those who love it, hate it, those
who nurture it and those who destroy it.
It is a great honour for our country to host
Documenta 14 in 2017, the most important organization for contemporary art in

will seek and create with as much or as
little as they have. The young will spread
out their dreams and find the tools, wherever and whenever, to express themselves.
They turn to the great texts and use them
accordingly and as they can, they seek and
are sought. The new blood is already
adapted to these difficult times but most
importantly they have something to say,
to show, to report, based upon the current
issues of the times. Problems exist, actions are adapted, the cultural product is
produced and ways are found.
We have a birth! And that is the hopeful
message!

The influence of Theatre,- and especially

Tourism is well know. Tourism professionals and mainly those businesses involved in Cultural Tourism are demanding very early on to know the programs
of Festivals, Theatrical and Performing
Arts performances etc which are being
organized in Greece. Have you anything
to suggest regarding this matter?
Central strategic programming. If we
get serious we will be able to talk optimistically in about five years. However the

Cultural Athens one of the

Athens slowly obtaining a dynamic intercultural identity
TN asked, Ms Xenia Kaldara Vice President of Michael Cacoyannis Foundation, in an exclusive interview about
this cultural orgasm and mobility that
conquered Athens and the rest of Greece
Admittedly, over the last few years, Greece
has had to face a number of ordeals on a
social, political and financial level. The
country has been and is still being tested,
weighed down by mistakes and lies
which fuel the image of the pariah of
Europe, Ms Kaldara said.
However, trials and obstacles have always
been a motivation for a change of tack.
The creativity, innovation and imagination of Greek artists (and not only) have
always been an inseparable element of
Greek reality. The course of a destroyed
city or country, which is slowly beginning
to stand on its feet, via different methods,
is something that we have certainly seen
before. Birth (or rather re-birth) is the natural consequence after destruction or obliteration. In such a way the cycle of creation
is maintained.
Athens is slowly obtaining a dynamic
intercultural identity. It may be the new
Berlin if it manages to convert its disadvantages and its problems into challenges
for those who want to delve deeply into
tomorrow. If Athens accepts its present and
builds upon that it can become one of the

modern form which is multicolored and

such as today, the escape to art creates
new talented artists and art becomes more
creative and productive. What is your
opinion on this new generation of artists?
It is often something which sounds
strange to me, that a crisis creates opportunity. The word opportunity, with so
much misery about us, insinuates opportunism. You posed the question correctly:
Art is refuge and escape, introversion and
extroversion. Art, like water and like the

entire touristic locations will be brought

needed is an emergency plan to handle
our cultural product in order to contain the
damage. How? By utilizing every possible
modern means and sending out a message
in current time. By creating an observatory which utilizes everything we have here

as concerns the initial issue; the punctual

information and update of programs, institutions, cultural destinations, and life
in the city. This, however, takes time and
research and use of the latest technology in
networking and transmittal of information.
In times of advanced technological development, the creation of an online platform,
accessible to everyone (institutions, organizations, businesses, citizens etc) could
be the most efficient way to achieve that.

Have you identified specific correct

international practices in the sector of
organization and planning in the Performing Arts Festivals etc which you
believe should be applied in Greece, what
practices does the MCF apply?

hegemonic tendencies. Starting with the
crisis we created a tight internal model
which could deliver according to the current needs and demands.

known Festivals that you would like to

improve or eradicate?
Festivals, internationally, constitute a
destination and contribute hugely to the
survival of entire cities. They encapsulate
networking, exchange, and extraversion.
We have successful Festivals here. Are
they destinations though? A Festival which
is entirely funded by the Government is
obliged to serve Art, have high aims, give
prominence to the artists, and support
budding efforts and experimentation. Our
Festivals have managed to achieve all this
and they are prominent on the national and
international maps of modern culture.
They must, however, aim to support
their cities and the surrounding network of
businesses; the hotels, the restaurants, the
shops and the craftsmen. Is this happening? Does anyone take it into consideration
during the planning of the festivals? Europe speaks correctly of creative industry.
The time has come for us to sit at the same
table with true business initiative and to
exonerate it once and for all in our social
and emotional conscience.
On the other hand this business initiative
must recognize the reality of the people
who create and who dream of things which
are real and obtainable.
In the current national situation we are
all together and the smart thing to do is
to quickly create rules for a healthy coexistence.

Does culture need support or can it follow the rules of the market? What is the
MCFs proposal?
It needs both support and to follow
the rules of the market. We are talking
about a creative industry. Tourism must
be supported in our culture, our modern
culture, which will always be relevant to
our cultural heritage. Of course, in our
angst, we mustnt fall into the trap of producing culture for tourism.
Support, therefore, must come from
central strategic planning, which should
be used as a lever for development and a
canvas upon which individual strategies
should be drawn.
If we consider in this way the need of
support of the State instead of each serving himself we will be able to proceed to
the next steps.
Taking the financial conditions into
consideration, the question is not so
much, anymore, which road out of the
two to choose but rather a combination
of both. We know very well that in a system where a lack of liquidity has created
problems in the functioning of many organizations, culture is always one of the
very first casualties.
As concerns the market, you always
take demand into consideration but you
can never forget that the arts, the intellectual scene and cultural action can play a
major role in influencing demand!

has only one significant word in its vocabulary: Open. We are open and waiting for
you! Lets liberate expression. Lets put
all our ideas and proposals on the table.
The right ones will be found and those will
guide us to the next day.
How is a great event with maximum participation achieved?
The backbone of our Foundation runs
across the way of Michael Cacoyannis. He
created massive works, always filling the
venues as continues to be the case today,
across the globe. This is our cultural asset.
Is there a recipe for success? Maybe one.
To love your audience. To respect your
crowd and the ticket they paid for and to
face them with honesty. The era when art
could snub its audience has passed. Now
is the time to connect in solidarity and acceptance, to coexist and to share.
The MCF has expanded and evolved ever
since it opened. What is the recipe for its
success?
Extraversion and an acceptance of coexistence and existing institutions. First
and foremost is the weight and importance
of the name of our Founder, Michael Cacoyannis, abroad and particularly across
the Atlantic. As soon as the MCF site was
set up we had more hits from abroad than
we did domestically. We were quick to
set up International relations with institutions and Universities abroad, utilizing

be flexible to the changes of its external

environment, whether that be the socioeconomic factors or the sudden changes
in the program of hosted productions.
This adaptability comes from purposeful
planning, automation of its actions and the
importance it lends to foreseeing future
conditions, in constant balance with the
aims and the mission of the Foundation.
The MCF, as regards its pricing, continues to maintain its already reduced ticket
prices for most of its performances and
events, whilst at the same time managing
to secure its running costs without further
financial burden to the artists it hosts.
What are the future plans of the MCF, its
actions and collaborations etc?
Our future plans? We want to focus on
networking, extraversion, becoming a destination and a space for the new generation. A carefully tailored yet casual outfit
that everyone can wear and that everybody
loves!
We stand by the sides of the artists, we
are involved in the issues that are troubling society through non-profit actions
and we try, by every means available, to
produce and promote a significant artistic
result.
The time has come for not only Greece,
but Europe and perhaps the entire West

Medical Tourism in Greece

One of the top destinations

What are the Advantages?

ith communication
between people becoming easier and
faster, the world seems to be
shrinking. Nowadays, people
travel a great deal, and many
live and work in different parts
of the world during the course
of their lives. To cater to these
growing needs, the service sector, including medical services,
has become global. Greece constitutes one of the top destinations for what is called medical
tourism, in other words for providing health services to people
who dont reside in Greece.

Tourism in Greece
The expression medical tourism contains two words: medical and tourism. In Greece,
both of these services are provided at a very high level. Greece is
well known for being one of the
worlds foremost tourist destina-

tions. It is an exceptionally beautiful country with pristine waters

and beaches, top-class hotel infrastructure, and world-famous
archaeological sites that draw
a lot of visitors. Add to these
Greeces incredible climate,
the welcoming and friendly nature of its people, and its safety.
Lets not forget that Greece is a
part of Europe and, therefore, is
governed under the laws of the
European Union.

Medicine in Greece
When it comes to the medical
sector Greece is perhaps not as
well known as it is for tourism.
However, it is internationally recognised as a country with a high
level of medical care. Ever since
Antiquity and the time of Hippocrates, medicine has always been
a top priority for its people.
There are many reasons why
the level of medicine in Greece

is so good, and it is no wonder

that this country has one of the
worlds highest life expectancies
and among the lowest rates of
childhood deaths.

and infrastructure.
The level of private Greek hospitals is high, firstly because of
the high level of competitiveness, and secondly because

MEDICAL TOURISM

IN GREECE
High Medical Level
Here are the reasons why
Greece has attained such a high
medical level:
Greeks always considered
health an issue of particular importance. It was historically a top
priority and they spent a good
deal of money to preserve it.
A large percentage of Greek
doctors have worked abroad, in
a variety of countries, and have
acquired international experience, which they have brought
back to their own country.
In Greece, the medical sector is highly competitive. As a
result, more and more is being
invested in medical knowledge,
machines, and hospital buildings

Greece is a tourist destination

and international insurance companies expect Greek hospitals to
comply with the international
standards in order to be able to
hospitalise their clients.
For all the above reasons,
Greece now finds itself among the
top medical tourism destinations
in the world. It is no surprise that
countless people from all over
come to Greece to receive medical treatment. In addition, Greece
is located at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East, which
makes it easy of access. This, in
combination with the relatively
low cost of medical services in
Greece, has led an ever-increasing number of non-Greeks to
seek hospitalisation here. It is no

surprise that there are private hospitals whose patients are mostly

reece possesses all the key points

in order to become a top destination in Medical Tourism, states
Mr. Takis Meletis - Goldair Group Vice
President & Member of the Board of the
Greek Medical Tourism Council Elitour,
highlighting that Attica and Thessaloniki are
the main destinations, because they have the
main health and tourism infrastructures. He
points out that the main purpose of Elitour
is to promote health tourism in Greece and
cooperate with respective international organizations on global issues related to medical
tourism. It is also concentrated on defining
strategies in order to transform Greece into
one of the major destinations in medical
tourism.
Mr. Meletis, Greece has taken important
steps to establish itself worldwide concerning medical tourism. What are the main
factors that contributed to this process?
Is the countrys location, the personnels
scientific level, facilities, or maybe the insurance contract insured sign?
Actually, health providers, ministries of
health and tourism as well as businesspeople
who are related with the industry, try to develop these services to the foreign markets
without a common strategic plan.
As a result, the GREEK MEDICAL
TOURISM COUNCIL ELITOUR www.
elitour.org is established as an institution
that promotes collaboration between companies and the State.
Why do we still lag behind in that sector?
Which are our disadvantages?
The answer is simple. We dont have a
long-term plan, at least 5 years. Furthermore, we dont have the prerequisites before
sales. For example, we need:
legislative framework, which actually
does not exist now
The State should promote the advantages of medical tourism here in Greece, with
frequent reports, shows and presentations to
specific targeted markets
Collaboration with stakeholders of medical tourism in Greece in order to develop,
promote and educate the staff in health and
tourism concerning all the sensitive issues
in medical tourism.

A better approach and an invitation to

insurance companies and foreign social
security funds, facilitators, journalists and
other experts of the industry.
I would like to ask you, Why consumers
should choose Greece and not another
Mediterranean country?
Firstly, we have excellent health and hospitality infrastructures, a secure stay, excellent doctors, and multilingual nursing staff.
In addition, a very powerful brand name in
tourism, outstanding climate and cuisine
which gives emphasis on the Mediterranean
diet. Moreover, the cost and quality of medical tourism services are very competitive

it contributes to reaching the national goals,

in product differentiation and extending the
tourist period. Specifically by:
Promoting inbound medical tourism in
Greece and the cooperation with other national institutions, committees in the E.U,
Greek and foreign public departments.
Market education
The coordination of participants in order
to find common ground and further develop
their business entities in the health tourism
sector,
Supporting the state, to formulate regulation and legislation, in order to promote
health tourism in Greece,

To be honest, there are no reliable statistics now. As an assumption, 15 000 medical

visitors arrive in Greece annually.
Could the airlines development contribute
to the growth of medical tourism? According to your perception, which will be the
progress of medical tourism in a couple
of years?
Attracting visitors from Europe and the
Middle East is Greeces strategic plan for
medical tourism. Direct airline links with
target markets is desirable and necessary. In
the coming years, according to studies, there
will be significant growth in medical tourism because of the high costs and the waiting

compared to other markets. We also pride
ourselves in having very experienced professionals in tourism who have accommodated visitors to our country for many years.
Which are the best places in Greece as
far as medical tourism is concerned and
which are the fields in the industry that
we outbalance?
Attica and Thessaloniki are the main destinations, because they have the main health
and tourism infrastructures.
Actually, we have very good dental, ophthalmology and plastic surgery services.
Also, we are very good at pediatrics, cardiology services, dialysis, and check-ups.
The Peloponnese, Crete and Rhodes offer
such services as well.
Is there any improvement concerning the
cooperation between the public and private
sectors in medical tourism?
The main purpose of Elitour is to promote
health tourism in Greece and cooperate with
respective international organizations on
global issues related to medical tourism. It is
also focused on defining strategies in order
to transform Greece into one of the major
destinations in medical tourism. As a result,

Appealing to a variety of sources for the
funding of projects and operations of common interest.
Do you believe that by extending the tourist period, inbound tourism will increase?
What do you foresee for the medical tourism share in the Greek market and the
revenues?
Foreign visitors in medical tourism travel
a lot off season as well. For instance, plastic
surgery does not take place in summer. In
our view, the medical tourism season could
extend up to 12 months.
It is also important to mention that the average cost (3.000 to 8.000) of a medical
tourist is 5 times higher than a regular visitor.
It is estimated that revenues could reach
up to 2 billion Euros by 2022. Our goal is
to gain 10% of regular visitors, by offering

wealthier countries in Europe.
To sum up, the State should create a strategy and provide the proper tools required
in order to promote medical tourism. In
addition, entrepreneurs should invest in the
development and education of their staff
On the other hand, health providers should
staff their front desk concerning all the cultural and nutritional particulars of foreign
patients as well as adapting the cost services
to competitive levels. Moreover, tourist providers, in collaboration with other stakeholders should create an attractive, well
priced product-service for medical tourists
who are interested in visiting Greece.
It is meaningful to persuade them that we
mostly need well educated multilingual
professionals. Additionally, websites, signs,
leaflets and other material in languages of
the targeted markets are necessary.

Luxury Sailing Vacations

One of the most desirable

areas worldwide

Luxury Sailing Vacations in Greece and its islands have been on the
increase for decades now. In fact it is seen as a somewhat exclusive
and glamorous area. It is said that sailing in Greece and its islands is
one of a kind!

he diversity in scenery, culture and overall sailing experience makes it one of the most desirable regions in the world.
A luxury sailing vacation in to the Greek islands offers
stunning natural beauty, cultural heritage, sophistication
and glamor.
The Greek islands can be split into five major areas
when it comes to sailing and cruising vacations, namely
the Cyclades Islands, the Dodecanese Islands, the Ionian
Islands, the Saronic Islands and the Sporades Islands,
all of which are easily accessed so your sailing vacation
can start immediately. Furthermore, the islands are close
by, making it ideal for those that what to enjoy sailing
but at the same time explore different places and enjoy the night life most of these islands
have to offer. All five areas are blessed
with beautiful beaches, hidden coves,
stunning harbors and yacht marinas. A
brief description of what one can expect
from these five areas follows:

Cyclades Islands Yacht Charter :

The most famous island group in the
Aegean Sea comprises some of the
most beautiful islands in the world!
Gorgeous sandy beaches, architecture in white and blue,
traditional lifestyle, folk music, warm, hospitable people
and barren landscapes with isolated chapels turn a trip
to the Cyclades into a lifetime experience.
The name Cyclades refers to the islands forming a
circle (the name in English means: circular islands)
around the sacred island of Delos. According to the
Greek mythology, Poseidon, God of the sea, furious at
the Cyclades nymphs turned them into islands.
Millions of Greek and foreign visitors come to the
Cyclades every year to enjoy the dazzling light and the

crystal blue waters, in the quest

of the paradise on earth.

Dodecanese Islands Yacht

Charter:
The Dodecanese Islands in
south-eastern Aegean is the sunniest corner in Greece. Twelve
large islands and numerous smaller ones with crystal clear waters,
sandy or pebbly beaches, important archaeological
finds, imposing Byzantine and medieval monuments
and unique traditional settlements are waiting to be
discovered.
If you are desperately seeking to discover lesser-known, unspoiled destinations visit Leros or Pserimos. But there
is always Rhodes and Kos, larger and
more cosmopolitan islands awaiting to
offer you strong, and treasured memories. a two week sailing itinerary is
recommended for this area.

Saronic Islands Yacht Charter:

Aegina, Agkistri, Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Salamina and
the peninsula of Methana form the island complex of
the Argosaronic Gulf in southern Greece.
Sprinkled over the Argosaronic Gulf and steeped
in ancient mythology, these islands are small havens
in close proximity to Athens. Daily ferry connection
from the port of Piraeus makes them a lovely, easily
accessible all-year-round destination for the Athenians.
Visitors here will enjoy natural beauty, historical treasures, unique architecture, and glamorous, yet romantic
atmosphere.

Ionian Islands Yacht Charter:

The Ionian Islands refers to the chain of
Greek Islands stretching along the west
coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. The islands are well
known for their beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear
waters, architecture, charming villages and stunning scenic countryside which is verdant and flourishing with
greenery and nature.
Each Ionian island has a distinct character. The islands
are also known by their Italian names. These islands are
known to be covered with green unlike the Cyclades,
which is due to rareness of rain. Historically, these islands had a common fate, especially the three major
islands of Corfu, Cefalonia and Zante.

Sporades Islands Yacht Charter:

The Northern Sporades consists of 24 islands, only
four of which are inhabited; Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros.
The Sporades are fertile and heavily wooded, with
pine-forested mountains sloping down to some of the
best beaches in the Aegean, and the local architecture
is more characteristic of Northern Greece, with less
whitewashing and more stone roofs. Skiathos is the
best known and easiest to get to; accordingly it is the
most crowded, with throngs of visitors arriving all summer. Skopelos, while just as attractive, is less touristed

Greek villas to book anytime you

are ready for a dream holiday
Greece is the country in Europe where the sun is always
shining, with a yearly average of 70% sunshine.
By Katia Douka

reece and its Holiday Villas are strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and with airlines flying directly to its nine
geographic regions, Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands (including
the Dodecanese and Cyclades), Thrace, Crete, and the Ionian Islands, offer to travelers, easy access to the countrys
coastline.
Most of the Greek villas are built along the Greek coastline which is the longest on the Mediterranean and the 11th
longest coastline in the world at 13,676 km (8,498 mi), featuring more than 200 inhabited islands. The Greek culture
and history, the cuisine and the locals passion to welcome
and accommodate travelers, is perfectly combined with
elegantly decorated, exclusive retreats, located in the best
holiday destinations of Greece, makes it easy to families
or groups of friends to choose among the numerous Greek
Villas for a short or longer holiday all year through.
Luxury Villas in Greece, feature high standard living,
with breathtaking infinity swimming pools, inspiring views
to the coastline, stunning panoramic terraces and gardens,
minimalistic interiors and high quality service included.
It is rather common to expect amenities like daily Cleaning Service, Deluxe toiletries, Free WiFi, Fully equipped
kitchen, Private Infinity Pool and Satellite TV.
In villas, as in life, there are vast choices and sometimes
it can be tough to choose the right one. Space or style?
Design or comfort? Modern or traditional?
And while the proximity to either the beach or the city
center is rather a choice factor, the massive advantage is
that you are actually spending time with all your family
in a home environment that makes it worth it every time.
Its the viewof the twinkling lights of the yachts anchored at Psarou Bay in Mykonos, or the breathtaking
volcano of Santorini, the endless view to the calm and
friendly waters of the Aegean, or the Cycladic architecture
with cobblestone streets and whitewashed houses that stays
with you after youve left.

Urban or summer Villas, Greece has everything you need

for a comfortable and pleasant stay.
Services that are common to be offered, include exclusive services like fully dedicated in-house private chefs,
wedding planners, caterers, baby sitters, transportations,
and endless concierge services.
Escape to a villa that sits on a gleaming, secluded whitesand beach and features its own swimming pool and enclosed garden or on a luxury hill side built villa, on an
island in the Cyclades or on Crete, the Gulf of PortoHeli,
Spetses Island, Halkidiki, etc.
The holiday scene in Greece is very informal, with families enjoying either the beach on the sand or renting a sun
lounger under an umbrella, at laid-back organized beaches,
that offer all kinds of food and drinks.
Spending holidays in one of the Greek villas, you are actually combining history and style with the Greek passion
for the good things in life, as simple as it can get: Accommodation, history, sun, sea and good food. Regular boat
tours, sea sports, Greek cuisine with fresh fish, excellent
quality food and the perfect location for vegetarians, as
well as international cuisine is what you can expect to find
near your Greek villa.
The idyllic sunsets as seen by the sea view Greek villas
are unique as the sun sets late in the evening and the colors
combined with the heat and sea create mystical moments

http://www.travelling.gr and http://news.travelling.gr

that are perfect for family and couple bonding. But the
sunsets are not the only chance you will get to relax and
recharge. In a country so rich in ancient history, your holiday villa is definitely in walking or driving distance to
an a overwhelming historical site full of stories, myths
and artifacts that will fill your soul and balance your mind
before you visit the beach every day.
In the South Aegean, at the Cyclades, on the island of
Mykonos a Greek villa may be just that: A luxurious
country retreat fit for a prince. It could also be a modern
coastal property or a multi bedroom apartment in a larger
rural complex (often with a shared pool).
Youll pay a premium for such accommodation, because this is the region with the idyllic, and often larger,
properties, the historic Old town, the pretty villages, the
restaurants, and the glorious beaches that most villa holiday makers seek. Everywhere you go in the Cyclades
islands youll find all you need for a perfect holiday. From
long walks on the beach to romantic dinners overlooking
the ocean, theres something for every couple or family.
Holidays spent relaxing on the beach and swimming in
the sparkling, blue waters while evenings enjoying dinner
at Beach restaurants. Restaurants food is award-winning
and often with waterfront seating, youll be able to take
in a colorful sunset while you dine making it the perfect
holiday. But if you feel you would like to indulge in some
nightlife, either by organizing it in your villa or by visiting
the nearby nightclubs, you will find quite a few options to
choose from. Lower premiums could be obtained during
the months during and after Easter, in May, early June, late
September and October.
The heat during the summer can be overwhelming, too:
summer temperatures have been known to reach 35 degrees Celcium, but with the wind that is a feature of the
islands on the Cyclades and especially on Mykonos Island, life becomes much easier, and makes it perfect for
Kite-surfing, Windsurfing, Surfing and Sailing.
July and August are the windy months on Mykonos and
in the Cyclades in general, when the so-called Meltemi
winds come in, when the heat is at its highest, with the
winds cooling everything down!
Some of the best beaches in Greece are in the Cyclades
and on Mykonos island.

Villa vacation in Greece, are NOT just for the rich though!
There are lots of villas, villas resorts and retreats that are

round!

Athens is an ideal meeting

3. Bringing professionals and media to the city,
to experience Athens first hand and to showcase
its appropriateness and capabilities through
signature events, fam trips, workshops and site

The focus also lies in building effective B2B
channels in the MICE and Leisure sectors, while
aiming to improve the overall visitors experience.
The City of Athens Convention and Visitors Bureau is investing in actions which strengthens the
existing tourism infrastructure, convey a unified
and competitive identity for Athens, and promotes
the city abroad. Our goal is to portray all that Athens has to offer to as many
people as possible.
For this purpose the
ACVB has started organizing a series of annual workshops and forums, branded
as Travel Trade Athens,
dedicated to showcasing
the destination through
B2B appointments between
international hosted buyers
and local suppliers and familiarization trips.
The Travel Trade Athens
Workshop organized by

Association,is a highly effective way to promote
the destination.
During all three a total of more than 6.000 individual meetings between230 hosted buyers
from 29 countries and500 representatives of the
local tourism industry took place, thus offering a
unique opportunity for the citys tourism sector to
present its services and products and to pave the
way forward for future collaborations.

nner Kea is mainly mountainous with

narrow valleys forming between the
mountain ranges. Its coast forms small
bays, capes and caves. As you reach the island, you are welcomed by the gulf of St.
Nicholas, one of the largest natural ports
in the Mediterranean Sea. The numerous
gulfs on the island create the perfect refuge
for those who love water sports. All around
Kea, one can find a number of shipwrecks,
one of the most popular being the Britannic. Divers can marvel the richness of the
sea around Kea and visit these shipwrecks.
A visitor to Kea seldom realizes how rich
the vegetation of the island is. In the summer, its visitors mainly enjoy the amazing
beaches and hardly notice the forests with
the enormous oak trees, nor the sea lilies
which adorn its sandy beaches.
One can also admire the traditional architecture of the island, especially if they visit
one of the more traditional settlements as is
the capital Ioulida, Korissia and Vourkari.
As the boat slowly arrives in Kea, one
can spot, in the inner part of the island, the
white-washed houses of traditional Cycladic
architecture in the capital, or Chora as it
is usually referred to. The squares and water
fountains, the narrow alleys with the neoclassical buildings among the more traditional ones, will surely capture your heart.

A walk up to Leon, which dates back to the

6th Century BC, is a definite must-see along
with a visit to the Archaeological museum
and of course the Castle ruins. Ioulida is also
the place where one can enjoy a lovely meal,

a coffee and sweet and buy souvenirs and

jewelry to take home.
The port of Kea, Korissa, unfolds its beauty at first sight. Also called The Meadow,
it is built where the ancient city of Korissos
once was and where nowadays small houses
of Cycladic architecture spread from the top
of the hill down to the beach. What stands
out is the church of the Holy Trinity. There
is also a wide choice of accommodation,
restaurants, cafs, bars and stores.
Another place one should not miss visiting,
is Vourkari - the seaside settlement with a
most picturesque port where sailing boats
tie up. Apart from the sailing races, there
are also other athletic activities organized
as well. Once at Vourkari, you should not
miss trying its fresh fish and seafood, along
with the local appetizers. Its many summer
bars have made Vourkari the hot spot for
evening entertainment.
The church of St. Irene stands on the peninsula named after the church which is of
great archaeological interest. It is there that
archaeologists found the impressive clay figures Korres which can now be seen
and marveled at the archaeological museum
on the island. A bit further down, another
place of interest is the Kokas peninsula
an old deserted industrial area as well as the
well-known Steno of Lambros Katsonis.

One of the largest islands of the Cyclades, shaped like a drop and
standing in all its glory within the sea current of Cavo-Doro, bridges the
mainland with the Cyclades. It is but only 16 miles away from Lavrio
port and 40 miles from Piraeus.
Nature lover and hiker,
kea is the perfect place

I
Kea is indeed rich in beauty and unique.
As one heads towards the east of the island,
they are met with a magical view of Otzia.
Walk through olive groves, pistachio nut
trees, almond trees and other fruit-bearing
orchards. As you enter Otzia, feast your
eyes on the scattered white-washed and
stone cottages in perfect harmony with
their surroundings. A stretch of 700m golden sandy beach invites you to dip into its
sapphire-blue water which hosts many tiny
boats. Two chapels adorn the two ends of the
beach while one can find taverns right on the
water, and many rooms to let. If this is not
the perfect holiday destination, then what is?
Pisses is one of the oldest settlements.
It was once one of the four city states of
the island. The fertile soil with the valley
stretching right up to the water, is full of
fruit trees and you can also find all kinds of
vegetables growing there. A tourist destination, with many rooms to let, a campsite,

supermarkets and restaurants. If youre planning to visit, do so on the 6th August when
a huge celebration is organized right there
on the beach in honor of the Metamorphosis
of Christ which is celebrated on that day.
Karthea, one of the four oldest cities, is
situated south-east of the island and is like
walking into a time machine. Nothing whatsoever reminds you of the 21st century. Time
has stood still here. To get to Karthea, one
still has to take the old road which is mostly
gravel and left as is, so as not to wake the
sleeping clock which makes Karthea stand
out. Along the way, you can hear the water
from the river rush and you will be amazed
at the lush vegetation and animal life. At the
southernmost point, stands the temple of the
goddess Athena (6th-5th century).
When planning to visit Kea, be sure to
pack your walking shoes as well as your
bathing suit as the island is suitable for
many exploration hikes and rides.

f you are a keen hiker and nature

lover, Kea is considered to be a
hikers paradise with a rich network
of trails which amount to 81km in
total. The trails have been characterized as the Network trails of Cultur-

al Interest. Twelve well-marked and

well-maintained routes will take you
through forests of oak trees, wild
flowers, traditional water fountains
and picturesque white-washed chapels.

Mytilini becomes visible. Approaching the
harbour of Mytilini, one can see the Statue
of Liberty, created by the sculptor Gregory
Zevgolis and the baroque church of St. Therapon which dominates the port.

The city of Mytilini

Mytilini, which is capital and port island
of Lesvos, also capital of north Aegean region, is founded in the 10th century BC. It
is built on the southeast edge of the island
upon seven hills.
Mytiline is also the seat of a metropolitan
bishop of the orthodox church. The city is
distinguished for its history and for that rea-

son, the town contains monuments, houses,

churches, schools and other important buildings from the various historical periods.
The city has numerous museums, such as
Theofilos museum, the Teriade museum, the
Ecclesiastical Byzantine museum, the Folk
Art Museum, the Archaeological Museum
Not to mention that Christian monuments
have a strong presence in the island and reflect the culture and the spirit of the inhabitants. In the northern part of the city, there
are lots of Ottoman monuments, the Yeni
Cami, Carsi Haman.

Nowadays
It is Mytilini of today that attracts however the most interest for many. The city
spreads from the large harbour up into
the hills and mountainsbehind it and is

crowned by an enormous castle whose

foundations were laid during the time of
Justinian on the ruins of an even more ancient fortification. In that wider area one
can visit restaurants, lots of interesting
shops, theatres, and the traditional caf
Panellineion. In Ermou street, the main
and most popular street of the town which
is called Palea Agora, there are several antique and grocery shops. It is worth mentioning that eating fish in Mytiline is a great
experience. The island has lots of fresh fish
at very reasonable prices.
The town of Mytilene has a large number
of neoclassical buildings, public and private houses. Some of them are the building
of the Lesbos Prefecture, the old City Hall,
the Experimental Lyceum and various mansions and hotels all over the town.

Plomari is about 45 km
from Mytilini and is one
of the most important
areas in Lesvos. Due to
its coastal position, it
developed as an important junction for marine
transport and trade in
19th century.

Greece has proven itself to be one of the fastest rising wine regions
Digital revolution changes habits of
producers, wholesalers and customers, as well. The financial crisis also
modifies priorities of customers, supply
chain and logistics model in many
industries. Amongst them, the ways
of selling and buying wine. In that
context, a new on line sale platform of
wine has been recently penetrated in
the Greek wine market. It achieved a
true diversification offering couple of

hings have been changing in

Greece over the last couple of
decades. And we are not talking
about the financial turmoil troubling the
country. It all has to do with wine!
Lately Greece has proven itself to be
one of the fastest rising wine regions of
Europe and the world in general. The old
slow pace of the past has been abandoned
for a fast growing quality wine production rhythm that has taken the wine world
by surprise.
How do we know? Fortunately it is our
job to find the best wines from small, alternative wine producers, before they go
mainstream. Botilia.gr is one of the most
successful and fastest growing startups in
Greece. It is an online sales platform that
helps users discover wines from smaller,
artisanal Greek wine producers and buy
them at winerys prices. Our team of expert
oenologists and sommeliers is curating the

Nemea
It is the biggest wine region in Greece
and should be an easy visit when you are
in Athens as it lays less than 1,5 hour
drive away. More than 30 wineries promise to impress you with their Agiorgitiko
red wines. If you are a fan of Sangiovese,
then Nemea is the place for you as its
wines are typically lush, velvety reds,
with red berry and black cherry flavors
and firm acidity.
highest quality Greek wines, rejecting over
90 % of the wines tasted in the process.
Every week on www.botilia.gr you will
find new wine propositions at great discounts, which can be delivered anywhere
in the world. All wines are described precisely and for each one, our sommeliers
recommend the best dishes to pair it with
and provide recipes suggested by chefs and
food bloggers for the perfect food pairing.
There is an extended presentation of the
wine producer himself, and believe us,
there are many big stars on the rise!
Wine travelling in Greece is not a bad
idea at all with wine tourism being on the
rise as well. Just picture yourself tasting
some amazing white wine at a beautiful
winery location, knowing there is a fantastic beach waiting for you just a few
minutes away. Or, trying a velvety, oak
aged lush red wine in a stone built cellar, after having visited an ancient temple
or a picturesque old church in secluded
beautiful sceneries.
Main wine regions to surely amaze you
include:

Santorini
Along with its beautiful sunsets, the
spectacular volcanic island is home of
the Assyrtiko grape variety and Assyrtiko wine. Bone-dry citrus flavored
and with crisp acidity and overwhelming minerality due to the lava soil of the
vineyards, Assyrtiko is one of a kind.
It is by far the best known Greek wine
and the Assyrtiko grape is already travelling abroad with famous Australian
producer Jim Barry being the first to
produce Assyrtiko wines far away from
Greece.
Naoussa
In northern Greece, just an hours drive
from Salonika, lays Naoussa, a wellknown for its red wines region. Made
from xinomavro, a distinctive red native
variety, Xinomavro wines are very popular among fans of nebbiolo and pinot
noir. Its wines produce amazing character
and extraordinary complexity, rich and
flavorful palate, with high acidity and
distinct aromatic character.

Crete
The beautiful southernmost Greek island is home to a great number of indigenous varieties. If you are into whites, then
Vidiano is the one you should look for.
Complexity, intensity and velvety feel in
a white wine which is becoming the next
big thing in the Greek wine world and
gaining international attention.
If you are the red wine type, Kotsifali,
Mandilaria and their blends should be
your thing with their overwhelming red
fruit aromas and flavors and spicy character.
