WEATHERLY ROTARY FOUNDATION president Gary Makuch thanks members of Weatherly Borough
Council for their vote on Monday, April 19, to purchase the former Weatherly Steel plant property. “We
appreciate the vote of confidence,” he said, and noted that great things could be accomplished in the bor-
ough, “progress through cooperation.” Members of the Foundation, the Weatherly Area Community
Library and the Weatherly Historical Commission were on hand to support the plan to have the borough
take over the purchase of the site. A memorandum of understanding was approved between the borough
and the Foundation regarding future operation of the Trainworks property, which is slated to become the
new home of the library, as well as contain space for a museum and community space. Borough manag-
er Harold Pudliner will draw down funds from a Housing and Urban Development grant to complete the
purchase. Voting in favor of the action were Mayor Tom Connors, and council members Joseph D’Andrea,
Harold Farrow, Celine Gerhart and Norman Richie. Council member Cecelia Gower was opposed, and
council member Joseph Cyburt was absent. Council also acted to appoint two new full-time police offi-
cers, George Keifer and Edward Kubert. Connors voted against hiring Kubert, saying he felt he would
make a fine officer, but that he was not convinced the borough should appoint two officers at this time.
