Introduction
There is an Official Journal of The American College of Sports Medicine that had been
published an article of The Injury Pattern Among Female Field Hockey Players on 2001. The
article is written by Karen Murtaugh from Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Western
Ontario, London, On, N6A 3K7, CANADA. The article had been published on Vol. 33, No. 2,
2001, pp. 201207. The purpose of this investigation is to examine injury patterns among female
field hockey players and to broaden the current base of knowledge by identifying the injury rates
of different playing positions. The writer assumes that the goalkeepers would have the highest
rate of injury, followed by forwards. The coaches of hockey team at the university are very
cooperates as he allow and agree to enroll their teams in the study. This investigation is
continued with the help of 158 female field hockey players which each of the player signed a
consent form before filling out the questionnaire. The mean age of players in the final sample
was 19.8 year (range 1432 year) with a mean of 6.8 (6 3.5) year of playing experience. Among
these athletes, there were 30 with only high school experience, 23 intermediate level players
(club and/or provincial experience), 75 varsity athletes, and 30 national level players.

Critiques and Idea

From my perspective about this study is that the writer wants to investigate which part of
body do occur most injuries with different position of hockey players. Then the writer does state
the hypothesis that he assumes which the goalkeepers would have the highest rate of injury,
followed by forwards. It is good to have opinion and assumption before doing the investigation
as it can be the goals of what he wants to gain from the study. Apart from that, I as a reader also
get the point of the study clearly even before fully go through the article. The result of this study

shows that the most frequently injured site of the body was the lower limb (51%), followed by
the head/face (34%), upper limb (14%), and torso (1%). The most prevalent types of injuries
were ankle sprains, followed by hand fractures and head/face injuries. Goalkeepers had the
highest rate of injury (0.58 injuries/athlete-year), whereas midfielders were the most injured field
players (0.36 injuries/athlete-year). The most common injuries to goalkeepers were (in order of
the number of occurrences reported) concussions, wrist fractures, ankle sprains, thigh muscle
strains, and knee ligament tears. The majority of these injuries occurred due to contact with other
players, the playing surface, or the goal itself. The writer does a good hypothesis which shows
the same as the result of study. As the result of study shows that the goalkeepers have the highest
rate of injury at the lower limb of the body, there also shows that often occur at head and face
which is quite serious. The most frequent site of injury was the lower limb, followed by the
head and face, upper limb, and finally the torso The cause of the injury mostly because the
hockey balls ( 42% ) followed by the sticks ( 36% ), the players ( 18% ), and the ground ( 4% ).
The injuries that occur to the player are dangerous and can cause harm or trauma for the players.
Therefore, more immediate approach to reducing severe injury would include education about
the risks of head and eye injury and strict enforcement of the current rules. For example, a recent
survey indicated that parents saw a need for the mandatory use of mouth guards in field hockey.
Mouth protectors have been shown to decrease concussions, cerebral hemorrhages,
unconsciousness, jaw fractures, and lacerations of the lips and cheeks. For conclusion, This study
demonstrated that the most prevalent injuries in field hockey are ankle sprains, hand fractures,
and head or face injuries. Hence, further examination of the playing situations that lead to injury
should be undertaken. This article is easy to understand and the writer gives the specific data,
information, and good example to make it clearer for us to go through the purpose of the study.
