Every year Spring Fling offers
students, alumni and friends of the
university a weekend of celebra-
tions, music and activities on the
Village Lawn.
For this year’’s ““Las Vegas””-
themed weekend, the activities
are less centralized and spread out
across campus, but that doesn’’t
mean it can’’t be a fabulous few
days. This weekend there is a great
line-up of musical artists, activities
and comedy to keep us occupied as
we enjoy the sun for one last hurrah
for the seniors and one last weekend
of fun for the rest of the university
community.
Girl Talk
The main event of every Spring
Fling is usually the Saturday night
concert on the lawn, but this year’’s
artist, Girl Talk, will perform on
Friday night in the sports center.
DJ Greg Gillis, better known by
his stage name Girl Talk, made a
name for himself in electronic/ex-
perimental styles, digital sampling
and mash-ups. His scantily clad
MySpace (myspace.com/girltalk)
has 14 songs available to listen to,
where you can get a feel for his
style and hear the beats you will be
dancing to on Friday night.
Many people wonder how this
Pennsylvania DJ ended up with
a name like Girl Talk. Gillis told
FMLY (thefmly.com) in 2009, ““[it]
is a reference to many things, prod-
ucts, magazines, books. It’’s a pop
culture phrase.”” He goes on to say
that he wanted to stir up some con-
troversy within the small, ““overly
serious, borderline academic type
electronic musicians…… Girl Talk
sounded exactly the opposite of a
man playing a laptop, so that’’s what
I chose.””
Signed to Illegal Art Records, Girl
Talk has four albums and two EPs,
along with several compilations and
remixes credits. There are no other
members of Girl Talk, so expect to
see Gillis on stage with his laptop
Friday night.
Envy on the Coast
Opening for Girl Talk on Friday
night, Envy on the Coast is a post-
hardcore/alternative/pop-punk band
from Long Island. Envy is signed to
Photo Finish Records and has spent
time on tour with the likes of 30
Seconds to Mars, Head Automatica,
Cobra Starship and The Receiving
End of Sirens, among others. Their
album, ““Low Country,”” is available
to stream on the band’’s MySpace
(myspace.com/envyonthecoast).
The band has a driving alternative
rock sound that will likely bring
smiles to a lot of faces. Students
should expect a powerful live show
from Envy on the Coast.

Comedian Loni Love, Campus
Activity magazine’’s ““Hot Comic””
of 2009, will be performing on
Saturday night in GSU. Love can be
recognized from her appearances on
various television series, including
VH1’’s ““I Love the 70s/80s/90s,””
and comedy stints on Jay Leno and
Chelsea Lately, and Comedy Central
just announced they will be lming
a 1-hour stand-up special on May
8, ““Loni Love: America’’s Sister.””
Her humor is popular on the college
comedy circuit and she has television
credentials up the wazoo.

Umbrellas For Peace Travels to Hartford

Student art brought an awareness

of violence prevention and world
peace to the university’’s campus
last week.
The ““Lamb Umbrellas for Peace
Project”” was an event run through
the Connections Health Education
& Wellness Center and the Women’’s
Center to give students an oppor-
tunity to express their support for
peace through the use of art.
““As a visual art project students
get to paint the umbrella with their
adaptation of what global peace
means to them,”” said Patricia
McKenna-Grant, director of the
Connections Health Education &
Wellness Center. ““The artist uses an
umbrella as a symbol of safety. It is
kind of universal because everyone
uses an umbrella.””
The event was inspired by a
worldwide program started by artist
Matt Lamb, who involved relatives
of 9/11 victims to use the painting
of umbrellas to express their grief
after loosing family members in the
attack on the Pentagon.
Since 2002, the Lamb’’s project

The grant will also be able to ben-

be able to play a greater variety of

is installed,”” explains Ramsey.
This more accessible access to a
greater variety of music is extremely
important to the station, as their goal
is to ““broadcast programming that
cannot be heard on other stations,””
according to their website.
When Ramsey rst found out
about the grant, he said, ““I was
attered that the anonymous donor
thought so highly of us [the station]
and I was thrilled that they wanted
to support the station’’s mission.””
That mission is to provide the com-
munity with quality programming ,
as well as serving the needs of the
University of Hartford. So tune in

Joseloff Gallery Gets Up Close And Personal

exhibit featuring photography by
Chuck Close and poems by Bob
Holman.
The book, ““A Couple of Ways of
Doing Something,”” now turned into
an exhibit, has joined the University
of Hartford as of Wednesday, Apr.
14. The opening to this exhibit was
from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with an intro-
duction for what it entails.
This opening reception was free
to the public and located in the Jo-
seloff Gallery associated with the
Hartford Art School. The exhibit
will run from April 14 to July 27,
during which time, the public, as
well as students will get a feel for
extraordinary pieces of art.
The focus on this exhibit will help
advance and develop the ideas for
this gallery. All the exhibits shown
at the Joseloff Gallery are funded
through the Kohn/Joseloff Founda-
tion, and exponential amounts of
individual contribution.

quet, held Friday, served to recognize
students’’ efforts in each college’’s

What Can The Ofce Of Alumni Relations Do For You?

Being a part of the Alumni Asso-
ciation of the University of Hartford
has many benets. The goal of the
Ofce of Alumni Relations is to
uphold relationships with current,
past and future students.
One of the ways that the of-
ce does this is by promoting an
event that is known as ““Express
to Success”” which pairs current
upper-class students with alumni
professionals and allows students
to experience what their career
would be like with the leaders in
their prospective elds.
This is such an advantageous
experience especially for seniors
who are graduating in a year or less.
The Express to Success is a special
and unique opportunity that the
university offers.
The Ofce of Relations also has
an excellent networking program
called ““Anchor Online,”” which
is the University of Hartford’’s
online community. It is a social
networking service that promotes
communication and professional
networking with students and the
alumni members.

members.
The alumni anchor is a tradition
that gives back to alumni.
There are a vast variety of ser-
vices that the Ofce of Alumni
Relations offers for all those that
are involved in the University of
Hartford community, and all these
services are highly important to
the graduating seniors. Being an
active part of the alumni associa-
tion is benecial especially after
graduating.
There is so much that the uni-
versity provides and proves that
being a part of the University of
Hartford is a lifelong membership.

will be held in celebration of its 40th
anniversary. Students will have the
opportunity to enjoy a cake deco-
rated for Mother Nature, as well as
cupcakes and a themed menu.
This Thursday the 22nd,with ARA-
MARK’’s various activities, Earth
Day awareness is sure to be spread
throughout campus.

Hallucinogens, New Wonder Drug? Bystander Effect Still

It started and ended, with Timothy
Leary’’s experiments in the 1960s.
That is, until now. Today, 50 years
later, studies are once again being
conducted that are revealing the
benets of hallucinogens.
Just recently, the Johns Hopkins
medical school in Vancouver, Wash-
ington began ongoing experiments
with psilocybin, the psychoactive el-
ement in hallucinogenic mushrooms.
This ingredient can reportedly treat
disorders such as depression in can-
cer patients, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, post-traumatic stress dis-
order and even addiction to drugs
and alcohol, like no other drug can.
While advocacy for these experi-
ments won’’t be hard to nd among
our nation’’s younger generation,
psychedelics haven’’t been so taboo
for the past 50 years for nothing.
People all react differently; the drug
can have completely opposite affects
on two separate people. And while
some groups already view halluci-
nogens as being benecial, elements
such as laws, warnings and general
uncertainty about the subject leave
most to believe it’’s nothing but risky
business.

pletely ridiculous to the other
members of the group.

neighbors of 20-year-old Kitty
Genovese watched and heard a
serial killer stalk and stab her to
death in two separate instances
in her neighborhood of Queens,
New York.
Genovese allegedly struggled
with her attacker on the street
and in her building all the while
screaming for help yet nobody
came to her aid.
According to The New York
Times, one neighbor who was
questioned by police as to why he
failed to act said, ““I didn’’t want to
be involved.””
This infamous case became the
primary example of the bystander
effect.
These types of instances oc-
cur more often then we’’d like to
believe in today’’s society. It’’s not
just enough to say that you would
be willing to come to the aid of an-
other human being in need of help,
we should be constantly ready to
protect with as little as a phone call
to the police.
Sounds simple but many don’’t react
as they should, instead they turn away,
fearing that by getting themselves
involved they are somehow going to
be the next victim yet to stand by and
do nothing is corrupting our societies
moral integrity.
In the case of the young California
girl, many witnesses later stated that
they were afraid of gang retaliation
but just a single 911 call could have
saved this young girl from the psy-
chological damage that comes from
a brutal attack like this.
So I leave you with this ques-
tion, would you be the hero or just
another bystander?

Hire Good For Hawks

““Let the dream begin.””
And so began the John Gallagher
era of Hartford men’’s basketball,
less than three days after Dan Lei-
bovitz abruptly resigned with four
years remaining on his contract to
take Gallagher’’s previous assistant
job at Penn.
Gallagher’’s introduction on
Friday morning at Chase Arena
concluded one of the strangest
weeks in university history. Last
Tuesday night Leibovitz left the
program, a move that created a
chain of events culminating in Gal-
lagher being hired to take over for
his former boss. Sound confusing?
It was. But now, after all the dust
has settled in, the Hawks have a
new coach.
Will it work out? Time will tell.
““I’’m really pleased at how this
has all worked out,”” said Hartford
President Walter Harrison. ““I’’m
really optimistic for the future of
our men’’s basketball team.””
While Harrison is optimistic,
I’’m a little more skeptical of hir-
ing another 32-year-old coach
with no experience leading his
own program. But, after meeting
Gallagher and listening to him talk
for only ten minutes, one thing is
painfully obvious: This isn’’t the
same 32-year-old coach the uni-
versity hired four years ago. John
Gallagher is far different than Dan
Leibovitz.

See, a lot of people are kind of
scared to talk about sex toys. A few
weeks ago, in the midst of spreading
out an array of sex toys for an RA
program (note: I’’m an RA. I do a
lot of strange programs that involve
things you don’’t normally deal with
on a daily basis), I realized how
completely comfortable I am with
sex toys. It’’s not because I use them
all (get your mind out of the gutter),
but it’’s because I talk about them.
So I’’ll talk about them here.
Vibrators can be a girl’’s best
friend. Seriously. When men fail,
or there’’s no man in sight, a vibra-
tor can give you exactly what you
need when you need it without
complaining about it. It’’s the perfect
silent partner.
They come in a huge assortment
of kinds, sizes, colors...everything
basically.
There are small, pocket-sized
ones, and there are big ones like the
Rabbit. Thank you, Sex and the City,
for introducing the world to that one.
The Rabbit is kind of intimidating,
but if it’’s something you’’re comfort-
able with, it can be plenty of fun.
Girls have a harder time getting
off than guys do anyway.
So, with the assistance of a vibrat-
ing friend, having an orgasm can be
a hell of a lot easier for girls. Plus,
you can incorporate the smaller ones
in sex so that while you’’re having
sex you use the vibrator. Good times
all around.

said Gallagher is great at selling

Friday’’s press conference, I un-
derstand what he means.

He sold himself, the program and
the future, and if he can do that in
front of recruits for the next few
years, Hartford might just be able
to build a winning program.
Talking to players, you get the
sense they would already run
through a brick wall for Gallagher.
Leibovitz was a very bright coach
who found early success, but you
never got the feeling he was a
great motivator. Just watching
Gallagher at the podium, you see
the condence, and condence is
contagious.
At the very least, you can be sure
Gallagher will bring new energy to
the program. Meiser said Gallagher
is more passionate about the game
than anyone she’’s ever seen, and I
believe her.
Hiring a young coach can be
tricky because being so close in age
to the players can create a problem.
Without a doubt, these players
respect and love Coach Gallagher.
Leibovitz was a great individual
who left a positive impact on the
university with his class and work
ethic. Sometimes change is needed.
The players already believe in Gal-
lagher, and by the end of his tenure,
I’’m guessing everyone else will too.
small, but they pack a punch. These
are made to enhance sex in a more
convenient way than a vibrator.
I’’ve noticed that the rings tend to
run pretty small though, so there’’s
a chance that it could actually hurt
a guy. So be wary with that.
There are sex games to play, like
card and dice games. These can be
silly, but they can also give you
a chance to experiment with your
sexuality and your comfort-level
with your partner. If it ends up being
awkward, you can just laugh it off
with your partner.
Handcuffs have always been a
classic, it seems. Simple enough,
they’’re used to dominate your part-
ner. And they have fuzzy ones so that
it’’s not so harsh on the skin. Plus,
who doesn’’t like something fuzzy?
It’’s kind of cute, and once you get
past the cuteness it’’s pretty sexy.
There are a million and four types
of sex toys out there. And, depending
on your comfort level, they can all
be experimented with.
I would suggest bringing up the
topic with your partner before you
jump in and buy something crazy
(i.e. anal beads...err...weird.). You
want to make sure it’’s something
you can enjoy on your own, but if
it’’s something you want to try with
your partner they have to be ready
for it too.
Sex toys are just fun, plain and
simple. When you’’re alone, they
can help you through a dry spell, or
immediately satisfy a sexual urge.
They can spice up a boring sex life,
and they can give you a chance to
get to another level of comfort and
sexual desire with your partner. Why
not give them a try?

Is It Ethical To Buy A Story?
Apple has dominated the
technology news cycle for the
better part of a month now, for
some things it intended to do and
one big, embarrassing moment
in company history.
One of Apple’’s engineers left
a prototype iPhone, expected to
be unveiled later this year, on a
bar stool just 20 miles from the
company’’s Cupertino, Calif.
campus.
Gizmodo, the technology
blog, paid an upwards of $5,000
to as much as $10,000 to get
hands-on with a device that
Apple had disabled using its
““remote wipe”” feature.
I could probably go on for days
about checkbook journalism that
Gawker, the parent company of
Gizmodo, and its owner, Nick
Denton, employs.
Paying for a story is such a
disingenuous thing——it’’s, in es-
sence, a bribe.
But it’’s hard not to feel as
though Gizmodo did this to
control a news cycle that Apple
previously had a stranglehold
over.

Mental Health Check Ups, A Necessity?

As a psychology major, I’’ve
been exposed to many different
aspects of human nature.
One of my professors last
week said something very
interesting that I never even
thought about before.
He asked, ““Why don’’t people
have regular mental health
check-ups?”” Why don’’t we
visit a psychologist routinely?
We go to the dentist every
six months and we get a yearly
physical. This also doesn’’t
include any other doctors that
we might require.
We visit our physician and
dentist regularly even if we
don’’t feel poorly. It’’s become a
part of living a healthy lifestyle.
Isn’’t our mental health also
important? Why don’’t we visit
the psychologist more often?
This could be because of
the negative stigma that is
associated with ““shrinks.””
When people hear the words
psychologists or psychiatrists,
many people immediately jump
to a bad connotation of it.
Many use the term ““crazy””
and believe that there must be
something completely abnor-
mal that would warrant a visit.

Apple announced their biggest
non-holiday quarter prots, not one
journalist posed a question regard-
ing the lost prototype iPhone.
One would venture to guess that
every single journalistic outt that
was on that call had an article about
it in their newspaper or website.
That doesn’’t mean paying for a
story isn’’t a bad idea (because it is),
but when it’’s a company like Apple,
the reportage from Gizmodo thrusts
that control away from an empire
with such an authoritative hold on
the public and media relations front.
But checkbook journalism isn’’t
the worst thing Gizmodo could have
possibly done regarding this story.
The blog revealed the name of the
individual from the company who
to be the focus when looking at
psychology.
This negative mind set seems to
be perpetuated by lm and society.
I think regular mental health visits
should be strongly encouraged.
According to ““Psychology
Applied to Modern Life,”” only
15 percent of the United States
population seeks mental health
treatments.
It also says that people always
delay treatment for many years
even after they recognize the need
for them.
The textbook also says that one
study shows only 59 percent of
people who need mental health
services actually seek help. If men-
tal health check-ups became a part
of a normal routine these numbers
might not be as staggering.
Reasons people seek mental
health treatments can include ad-
diction, anxiety disorders, marital
conicts, self-esteem, interper-
sonal relationships, depression,
eating disorders, etc.
Not only does the bad stigma that
surrounds mental health inhibit
people from going and seeking
professional help, but cost and
insurance can hinder it as well.
Not all insurance companies cover
mental health services or they
require referrals.
Also if you don’’t have insurance
it can be extremely expensive.

with this blunder. They threw him
under the bus. Jesus Diaz wrote this
lede to his article on Powell, ““The
Gourmet Haaus Staudt.
““A nice place to enjoy good
Lagers. And if you are an Apple
Software Engineer named Gray
Powell, it’’s also a nice place to
make the honest mistake of losing
the next-generation iPhone.””
The tone of this article is
whimsical, and the narrative is
mean-spirited.
Later, we nd out the guy lost
the phone celebrating his birthday.
Gizmodo didn’’t have to release this
guy’’s name, they would have done
just ne saying ““Some guy from
Apple lost this prototype.””
Joel Johnson, another writer at
the site, wrote ““foisting him into the
public eye might help him keep his
job at Apple,”” but criticized for the
way the blog did reveal his name.
Honestly, they didn’’t have to put
his name out there, so why do it?
Gizmodo is in the business of
making money and, hey, they’’re
out $10,000 from paying for that
story to begin with.
Even if you have an insurance
company that does cover these
visits, they might put a limit on
the number of times you can go
in a year.
All of these factors are not con-
ducive to allowing people to get
the help that they need.
On campus students can receive
services from Counseling and
Psychological Services (CAPS),
where the fee is included into with
tuition and fees.
In years’’ past there used to be a
cap on how many sessions students
can receive.
It was around 10 or 12 visits
a year. Their website now says,
““while the number of sessions
depend on the nature and extent
of the problem, students usually
engage in 6-8 sessions of counsel-
ing or less.””
They have changed to a case-
by-case basis.
Services like CAPS can be an
integral part in helping students
adjust to college life and I don’’t
think students know that they
can utilize these services without
charge.
The mental health stigma is
perpetuating a cycle of people who
need help but don’’t get it.
But by putting psychologist on
the same list as dentist, things just
might begin to change and more
people will get the help they need.

For Student, Sharing Music Comes As A Passion

To the unsuspecting student who
doesn’’t know sophomore Joe San-
chez, his biggest claim to fame is
his simple and friendly smile as he
passes you on the bridge to class.
For those fortunate enough to
discover the true quality of musi-
cianship Sanchez has to offer, the
depth of what they nd is immense.
Bred on the easy ow of vibes stem-
ming from San Antonio, Texas,
Sanchez’’s passion and excitement
for playing guitar is something rare
to come by in an area where great
stripped down acoustic music is
scarce.
““I think the quality of writing in
folk music is really what drives me.
It’’s the intimacy of a song that I’’m
really drawn to,”” Sanchez said as
he took his time and consulted his
memories for accuracy.
As Sanchez explained how he
started playing guitar and was intro-
duced to the Contemporary Christian
music of his church at a young age, he
paused to recollect on how his home
state’’s take on music inuenced him
greatly.
Living for music, Sanchez attri-
butes his sound and motivation to
the level of comfort and excitement
that the Austin music scene offers.
Playing regularly with his band
David and The Stone Throwers back
home in Texas, Sanchez’’s enthusiasm
peaked when speaking of his peers,
David and Michael’’s, inuence.
““David Garza is probably one of
the most natural musicians I know
and my biggest inuence next to
Glen Hansard and Josh Ritter,””
Sanchez proclaimed.
Regularly adding and subtract-
ing a specic sound element via
a violinist or female vocalist to
give the band a certain texture for
a given gig, it is easily recognized
that Sanchez’’s musical motivations
and loyalties lie with sharing music
with his friends and anyone else
willing to listen.
A genuine and good-natured guy,
Sanchez’’s maturity level for a col-
lege musician is yet to be matched in
my eyes. Playing music for the thrill
of lling the void life sometimes
throws at you, Sanzhez’’s vibrant
style and voice that can untangle
even a stranger’’s troubles is what
sets him apart from your typical
acoustic strummer.
Without giving himself much
credit, he talks in inuences and at-
tributions to musicians who helped
mold his unique style. What I found
to be most compelling during my
sit-down with Sanchez was how in-
exhaustibly drive his love for music
is. If nothing else, Sanchez wants to
be able to share music with people
offering his input and soaking in
new sounds.
A storyteller at heart, it is Sanzhez’’s
love of the caliber of song writing that
gives his sound its edge and denition.
When thrown into the mix of the all

but dead musical community of New
England that was forced underground,
Sanzhez admits that he struggled to
nd musical direction when arriving
at the university his rst year.
““When I was a freshman I really
found myself without a genre. I got
to search for things I was interested
in by myself without following the
inuence of my friends,”” he said.
Two years later Sanzhez has
found his groove here at Hartford
and is slowly making his mark by
playing during Community Day
2009, winning rst place in the In-
ternational Dance Team Christmas
Cabaret, playing Hartford for Haiti
and currently competing in Thurs-
day’’s talent show, which will take
place in Gengras Student Union.

A raw collection of recorded
material, the mission of the Day-
trotter Sessions, recorded at The
Horseshack Studio in Rockland,
Ill., is to harvest new artists’’ music
and offer it for free download.
Featuring one band a day,
everyday, the sessions yield 28
new songs per week offering four
free songs from up and coming
independent artists.
Rolling into the sessions in
between tour dates recording
on borrowed instruments, the
nal products mirror the original
recording with no over dubs or
mixing done to the tapes.
The spirit of Daytrotter is not
to credit the website with notic-
ing the next big thing rst or to
promote one specic artist, instead
the purpose is to make available
a slew of great music all in one
convenient place.
With so many sources compiling
many of the same songs and new
artists scattering music all over
the Internet, Daytrotter’’s synthesis
and simplication process helps to
weed out the articial leaving only
real, pure music.
My current obsession, this music
collection is the perfect place to
discover new bands and get turned
on to great music.
With artists such as Ingrid Mi-
chaelson, Josh Ritter, Andrew Bird,
Spoon and Of Montreal already
nding a home at Daytrotter, the
list of new sessions is growing by
the day. Given the opportunity to
go back and search the archives
for any artist who has recorded a

session in the past, this feature
allows the luxury of going back
to day one.
The creators want the users
experience to be as pleasant as
possible as they become engulfed
in the amount of material avail-
able for download. All that is
required is an e-mail address and

Christofer Drew Challenges Scene Stereotypes

Christofer Drew, lead singer
and creator of the persona Never-
ShoutNever has put himself into a
very unique situation over the past
ve years. In a time dominated by
““scene”” bands, Drew has managed
to stand out, performing acoustic,
melodic music alongside of 2010’’s
top pop artists.
Taking a constructive attitude to-
wards the bands he shares the stage
with, he says that he has the oppor-
tunity to learn from his experiences
and grow as an artist.
A former high-school tennis
prodigy, Drew gave up on those
dreams to pursue music full time in
2007 at the age of 16, recording on
his own and growing his reputation
on MySpace. In an interview with
Alternative Press, he recalled playing
for empty coffee houses and often
getting booed and laughed at playing
to a 25-and-up crowd at the age of 14.
When I asked him about that time in
his life he said, ““Everyday you have
to appreciate it, I’’m glad that I come
from a humble background, it makes
me truly appreciate and take advan-
tage of every blessing that I have...””
It became evident early on that
while some of the pop stars on the
““scene”” circuit are obsessed with
branding, bottom lines and sold out
shows, Drew’’s intentions are simpler.
He is a spiritual person who will use
words like ““blessing”” and ““positiv-
ity”” instead of ““fame”” and ““money””.
As with anyone in his situation, Drew
knew that when it came to growing
his career, he would have to be cau-
tious, preserving the music, the thing
he cherishes most.
““I was very picky with the label
situation because I didn’’t want to
be controlled, I wanted to have all
my artistic values...I felt like War-
ner Brothers was a perfect match.
They’’re more of a career label, in-
stead of just getting a big single and
pushing it to radio, they’’re more into
just letting me do whatever I want
and having a 10-year career. I’’m all
about that vibe. I just want to keep
growing as an artist and I think that
a team is necessary for that.””
While most of the bands he per-
forms with (Hey Monday, The Cab
and Every Avenue are all currently
joining Drew on the AP Tour) are
very conscious of their radio singles,
Drew is in a unique position. Despite
his huge success within his genre,
he has never had a true radio single.
While two of the bands who open for
him have seen time on the Billboard
Pop Charts (Hey Monday’’s ““How
You Love Me Now”” peaked at No.
37 on the Billboard Pop 100 and The
Cab’’s ““Bounce”” peaked at No. 69
on the Pop 100 Airplay), Drew has
seen only mild success with his latest
album ““What Is Love?”” on the charts.
While these bands tour the country,
opening for NeverShoutNever, and
playing their hit singles, Drew takes
the stage each night, as the crowd
goes insane. Even as I stood under a
half lled tent at SXSW, the crowd of
half teen girls and half record execu-
tives exploded with energy as Drew
and his crew hit the stage. Drew and
the rest of the bands on the AP Tour
experienced something they rarely
do at SXSW. Walking the tight rope
between indie rockers and pop super-
stars, the crowds in Austin weren’’t
there to party. Instead, they were in
attendance to shmooze, drink and
talk business, something that Drew
wanted nothing to do with.
Something I wanted to explore in
my short time speaking with Drew
was how he felt performing with

touring with different genres, most

and Mercy Mercedes. Tours like
these have given him an interest-

not playing with other groups like
himself but is still managing to t in.
Something that Drew suggested
was a future tour with someone like
Jason Mraz or Jack Johnson. With
his love for performing with the pop
punk lineups, a tour with someone
like Mraz or Johnson would give
him instant validation in the adult
acoustic world.
In the summer of 2009, Never-
ShoutNever released their third
EP titled ““The Summer EP.”” The
very rst song from this album was
titled ““Happy,”” and the opening line
seems to sum up why Drew makes
the type of music he does. A self-
admitted ““sad person,”” Drew has
made happiness a key part of all his
songs. He stressed that he makes this
type of music so that kids growing
up can be happier than he was lis-
tening to sad music. ““Whenever I

album ““To The Sea”” on June 1,
music pioneer Jack Johnson’’s
newest contribution continues his
tradition of mellow lazy acoustic
melodies with an added mix of
upbeat electric ones.
Staying consistent with a new
release every two years since
his debut, Johnson’’s new album
explores his forte of love songs
and catchy sing-a-longs. Finding
inspiration from novels and other
artists, the album’’s concept was
adapted to follow Johnson’’s idea
of self-development and maturity.
Johnson spoke to MTV News on
the album’’s concept commenting
““I guess it’’s a reference to a father
leading his son to the sea, with the
water representing the subcon-
scious. So it’’s about trying to go
beneath the surface and understand
yourself.””
Releasing the single ““You and
Your Heart”” on April 6, Johnson’’s
rst track peaked at number 20 on
the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 within
the rst week, his highest single to

to show Johnson’’s fans how he
prepared and adapted to playing
to his largest audiences yet, the

are not just cookie cutter comedies
with lesser-known actors.

Armed with a trusty group of
friends to back up and enhance his
lovable sounds, Jack Johnson’’s ““To
The Sea”” is without a doubt the al-
bum I’’ve been anticipating ever since
its rumors surfaced in late January.

real sense of balance in pop culture,
I think people underestimate the
quality of creativity that is not only
Johnson’’s style, but also, his ability
to write about relevant topics that
you just can’’t help but dig.
the young cast and the graphic man-
ner of this movie, I was anxious to
see just how bad things really were.
Honestly, it was worse than I had
imagined. With as much blood as
a Quentin Tarantino movie, ““Kick-
Ass”” delivers an amazing amount of
action, shot in such a way that you
feel like you are a part of the scene.
At the center of this graphic
violence is Hit-Girl played by
13-year-old Chloe Moretz. Prob-
ably the most likable character in
the movie, Hit-Girl, along with her
father, Big Daddy (Nicholas Cage),
look to avenge the death of her
mother. Moretz does more killing
than anyone in the lm, racking up
a body count of at least 20.
She spends time twirling through
the air, throwing knives, blowing
peoples heads off at point blank
range and cursing like a British
sailor.
Despite her age, Moretz plays
the character brilliantly. One of
the only disappointments in the
movie was the performance by
Christopher Mintz (McLovin from
““Superbad””). A role that could of
been really funny, Mintz ends up
being just mildly funny, playing
the son of the movies main villain.
Sure the premise of ““Kick Ass”” is
stupid. Yes the plot is as predictable
as a Michael Bay action sequence.
But regardless, ““Kick-Ass”” got
it right.
The combination of a rela-
tively unknown cast, some future
comedic royalty (Clark Duke) and
a 13-year-old girl whose previous
works have included voice-overs
in ““Winnie The Pooh”” cartoons,
made for a perfect blend of rich
action sequences (rivaling those
in ““The Matrix””) and brilliant
comedic timing.

Foursquare Offers A Fun Competition For Users

““Have you checked in?”” seems to
be the question the Internet is asking
right now as geolocation services soar
in popularity.
By far the most popular among
these services is the mobile web-
based application Foursquare, which
has almost 1 million contributing
more than 23 million ““check-ins.””
Users of the Foursquare platform
compete and network as they go about
their personal lives.
The idea is that when you are at a
place of importance you ““check in””
to let your friends know where you
are. If you are at a restaurant or a
cool bar you check in and can leave
comments about the place you are
visiting. ““Checking-in”” earns you
points, if you complete certain tasks
you earn special badges, and if you
““check into”” a single place more than
any other person you become a mayor
of that place.
The dichotomy between social net-
work and game is one that is different
from any other social media platform.
In the very early days of Foursquare
it was genuinely a competition.
When I used it briey last summer
Foursquare was just four-months-old
and was only available in major cities
in the United States.
At that time my work place, a
particularly tech savvy group, were
competing for most popular place in
New York City.
Now though it has moved in the
other direction.
Available of an application for smart phones, Foursquare offers rewards that players can enjoy.
While there is still the concept
of points, and mayorships, there is
also the notion of knowing where
your friends are and what they are
doing. Yes, this sounds slightly
creepy, but once you get past this

South By South West Interactive
festival. It was there that Four-
square launched. But Foursquare

cation game.
It is joined by competitor
Gowalla, which while more at-
tractively designed, has only
amassed 150,000 users. In recent
months Twitter, the microblogging
service, has introduced geoloca-
tion on its tweets.
And in the next couple of
months Facebook will also release
some geolocation component to
its network. The interface for
Foursquare is actually incredibly
simple. Based upon your geologi-
cal coordinates, it gives you a list
of the places which are closest to
you. If the place you want to be
““checked into”” isn’’t there you can
add it easily.
To play Foursquare you really
need a smartphone with geoloca-
tion technology.
You can ““check in”” via text
message but it isn’’t the most
pleasant experience ever. If you
are running one of the four main
mobile operating systems on your
cell phone——iPhone, Android,
PalmOS and Blackberry——you
are already halfway to joining the
geolocation game. Downloading
an ofcial application for phone
and creating an account will allow
you to start ““checking in,”” earning
points, badges and mayorships.

into the evening on Saturday, the
Village Lawn will be home to a
half-dozen bands. Some of these
bands are new while some are old
favorites of Spring Fling.
Repeat offenders include Bronze
Radio Return, a rock band from
Connecticut who’’s album, ““Old
Time Speaker,”” is available through
the iTunes store; and The New
Band!, featuring Vice President
of Student Affairs Lee Peters (who
previously performed Spring Fling
with Back in Time).
New acts this year include:
Brotherhood of Thieves, Zach
Lockwood, Lifted and Cipha
Sounda. Approximate times for
each act are posted on the Spring
Fling website uhaweb.hartford.

Activities
As always, there will be plenty to
do if you don’’t want to watch the
performances.
Lawn activities include tradi-
tional favorites like the mechanical
bull and wax hands, with other
opportunities for fun while making
spin art frisbees or taking a ride on
the giant slide.
These activities all take place
on the Village Lawn on Saturday
afternoon, while other activities
will take place across campus.
On Friday night, there will be an

mons when Girl Talk is over, and
Saturday brings Hangover Bingo
to GSU at 8 p.m.
As usual, there will be a food
court this year but it will not be in
the Konover parking lot. Instead, it
will be in the parking lot between
Village Quad 6 and Quad 7. There,
students can take a short break to

various vendors.
Participation
Students must remember that in
order to participate in any Spring
Fling activities, they must have a
wristband and must also register
online. Students can register on
the Spring Fling website and pick
up their wristbands in the Suisman
Lounge in GSU during the fol-
lowing times: Thursday 4/22- 12
noon-11p.m., Friday 4/23- 8 a.m.-8
p.m., Saturday 4/24- 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
Without wristbands, students may
be escorted off campus or prohib-
ited from entering certain events.
Wristbands can be obtained at no
cost for University of Hartford

‘‘Winning Machines’’ Fourth Quarter Loss, Again
Baseball teams are comprised of
many ““parts.”” These players, posi-
tions, and responsibilities rely on
one another in order for the team to
function properly. Defensively there
are nine positions: pitcher, catcher,
four inelders and three outelders.
Offensively, there are nine ““parts””
these make-up the batting order.
Each of these positions, are further
divided into subparts; power-hitters
are ““cleanup hitters,”” fourth in the
batting order, fast runners can be
used as ““pinch runners”” slow-moving
power hitters get on base and a starting
pitcher must demonstrate reliability
and longevity.
Coaches and managers organize
these parts; drafting players, delegat-
ing positions, intensive training and
creating effective plays to produce
wins. All of these ““parts”” are meticu-
lously chosen to produce a ““winning
machine.””
But this ““winning machine”” would
be nothing but a pile of perfect parts
without fuel to propel motion and oil
to perpetuate this success. What are
these dynamic parts, the fuel and oil,
that sustains the winning machine?
In my efforts to identify this cata-
lyst, I turned to someone who I knew
could provide invaluable insight;
my 17-year-old brother, Justin, who
picked up a bat and a Yankees cap at
2-years-old, and hasn’’t abandoned
them since. He quickly responded
with, ““baseball teams rely on the
shortstop and pitchers to win games.””
Yankees’’ Captain, Derek Jeter, is
an exceptional shortstop - he sets
the team up for success. Shortstops
orchestrate the efforts of the ineld,
responsible for deciding who is

Hawks Shine Despite Weather

Holy Cross Invitational, Sunday.
The sophomore’’s dominant
vault of 3.04-meters was a mere
.01 seconds off of tying her school
record. ““I was really excited since
this is the second weekend in a
row that I have jumped 10 feet,””
said Hauswirth.
Speaking of records, Brittney
Lawson topped a personal and
school best, again. Lawson just
passed her previous record for the
hammer throw (46.17 meters) with
a heave measuring 46.18 meters.
Her throw was good for a second
place standing, and marked the
fourth time of the outdoor season
that she reshaped Hartford’’s record
for the hammer throw.
For the women, there were
several events where the  nal
results were ooded with high
performing Hawks. In the triple
jump, three Hawks nished within
the top ve. Priscilla Appiagyei
led the pack with a second place
honor, followed by Kristalena
Lamore with the third, and Mi-
randa Wallace taking the fourth.
Wallace also excelled in the long
jump, claiming the third spot in
the standings. Natalie Bonham’’s
leap of 4.78 meters was good for
fourth in the same event. Senior,
Kaycee Martinez also had a great
individual performance, nishing
second in the 400-meter hurdles.
On the men’’s side, Anderson Em-
erole and Warren Lane had another
great day on the track. Emerole
crossed the nish line second in
the 400-meter run with a time of
49.45 seconds. Lane took third in
the race, nishing less than a second
behind his teammate. For the 800
meter run, Mike DuPaul ran with
determination but had to settle for
second with Central Connecticut
freshman, Mohamed Hrezi taking
the top honor.
Hartford has shown week after
week that the relay races are some
of the strongest facets to the team,
and did not fail to deliver this past
weekend. The 4x100 team em-
braced rst place domination this
past Sunday.
““Considering the bad weather, I
think the team did a great job and
we performed very well at this
competition,”” said Emerole.

The Hartford Hawks men’’s
team took on Marist tennis
Monday and came home with
a 7-0 loss.
The Hawks fell as Marist
swept Hartford right out of
the building with a convincing
win. This was the men’’s team’’s
second-to-last home match, and
their nal before their home
nale with Boston University
coming in on Saturday, and
the America East Tournament
starting next Friday.

ing Aaron Kooden and Edgardo

7-6 (7-3), but could not pull off
the victory.
Kooden also had a strong per-
formance at sixth singles, losing
the rst set 6-0, but coming back
strong and stealing the second,
dropping that one 6-4. Hartford’’s
top singles players also fought
hard, with first singles Aneil
Bhalla playing opponent Chris-
tian Cooley, but falling, 6-2, 6-4.
Second singles Josh Isaacson fell
much in the same fashion, 6-4, 6-2
to Nicolas Pisecky.
Their nal match against BU
on Saturday will start at 11 a.m.

Back-to-Back Wins End Softball Losing Streak

The Hartford softball team
earned a pair of much needed
victories this Tuesday, defeating
Sacred Heart 10-6 and 5-2 on the
road and snapping a ve game
losing streak.
In the rst contest, the Hawks
(15-16) set the tone for a dominant
afternoon in the rst inning as
they quickly claimed a 2-0 lead.
Jessica Oliveira singled to second
base early in the inning and later
scored off of an RBI from Amanda
Dilworth. Ann Kyzer would then
send home Dilworth when she
singled to right eld.
Sacred Heart would tie things
up heading into the fourth inning,
but Hartford exploded for seven
runs in the fourth and fth innings
to put things out of reach. Two
of these runs came from an RBI
double from Nicole Springer.
Kate Wacyk also came up big
with two RBIs in the fourth off of
a double to left eld and another
in the fth.
The Pioneers wouldn’’t go down
without a ght however, as they
managed to score four more runs
in the bottom of the fth inning to
make the score 9-6, but Dilworth
would single up the middle in the
sixth inning to send home another
insurance run and help the Hawks
hang on for victory.
Freshman Nicole Springer
earned the win for the Hawks,
improving to 2-4 from the mound
while earning three strikeouts.
Sophomore Siera Sheehan took
the mound for Hartford in the
second game and after giving up
two runs in the rst inning she
was stellar in her performance
by not allowing another Sacred
Heart run in the contest.
Hartford erased their early
decit in the third inning when
Springer doubled to center eld
and brought home two runners to
tie the score. Another double by
Olivia Piacentini saw the Hawks
take a lead they would never
relinquish.
Hartford, who entered the week
in last place in the America East
conference standings with a 2-10
record, dropped three games on
the road this past weekend in
Binghamton.
The Hawks face two more teams,

Hartford Hawks’’ Triple Threat: Bobby Gorski

The Hartford Hawks Baseball team
has endured many tough losses this
season with an overall record of 8-20,
and only 2-5 in America East Confer-
ence. Recently, it seems that versatile
players with a positive attitude, like
junior, Bobby Gorski, are just what
the team needs to pull off some wins
and turn their season around.
On Monday, Gorski secured a 7-5
victory over Albany for the Hawks
-- from both sides of the plate.
““I’’ve never actually pitched until this
year, so picking up a win as a pitcher
was an exciting accomplishment,””
Gorski said. ““The homerun also was
a relief for me, I hadn’’t been in the
lineup the last few games because I
was in the bullpen, so when I found
out I was in the line up I knew that I
had to take full advantage.””
Gorski’’s rst trip to the mound was
a success, and his notorious power at
the plate blasted a two-run-homer at the
bottom of the eighth inning, winning
the game. So how did Bobby Gorski
handle the pressure of his seventh-
inning jam that allowed 2 RBIs, 1 home
run, stolen bases, 4 walks and 3 men
left on base?
““Something I was taught at a young
age is that baseball is just a game, you
can’’t treat every situation like life and
death. So personally, it doesn’’t matter
if the bases are loaded with the game on
the line, or if no one is on with a 10-run
lead, I always take the same approach,””
he said. ““There will always be nerves,
I take a step back and remind myself
‘‘it’’s just a game’’ and I have fun with it.””

Gallagher Returns, 10th Coach for Hartford Men

Two years ago, John Gallagher
left Hartford and head coach Dan
Leibovitz for a University of Penn-
sylvania assistant coaching position
under Glen Miller.
On Friday, Gallagher returned
to the Hawks, becoming not only
Hartford’’s 10th men’’s basketball
coach, but also ironically Leibo-
vitz’’s successor and predecessor.
Gallagher had recently accepted
an assistant job at Boston College
under new coach Steve Donahue
when Leibovitz unexpectedly re-
signed last Tuesday night to take
Gallagher’’s vacated position at
UPenn. Just 48 hours later Gal-
lagher left BC, becoming the new
face of Hartford basketball while
taking the reins from his former
boss and close friend.
““Our program is going to be
about building bridges, not building
fences,”” Gallagher said at a press
conference Friday in Chase Arena.
““We’’re going to leave this better
than we found it, every day. As far
as the Hartford community, this
is a dream……let the dream begin.””
““He’’s a man of great intensity,””
said Director of Athletics Patricia
Meiser.
““He’’s as passionate about the
game of basketball as I’’ve seen.””
Gallagher, a Philadelphia native,
adopts a program still looking for its
rst NCAA tournament appearance,
although the Hawks competed in
their only America East title game
while Gallagher was an assistant
in 2008. Hartford was 15-48
over the past two seasons under
Leibovitz.
While this is Gallagher’’s rst
head coaching job, having seven
seniors next season should help
ease the transition, especially
considering he coached and
recruited many current players,
including all-conference guard
Joe Zeglinski.
““They (the players) were very
excited,”” Gallagher said. ““They
understand what they’’re getting
is not an unknown factor. Even
the guys I haven’’t coached, they
sort of heard from the other guys
what I’’m like. As far as that goes,
it’’s going to be a different role
as a head coach too.””
““When I heard he [Gallagher]
was in the running I was hoping
he would get the job and when he

after he was gone.””

Sikorski tied Sideranko with

nished with an 86 on the day,
good enough for the number slot.
Rounding out the Hawks top ve
was Kirsten LaPointe, who tied
for 10th, shooting an overall 93
on the day of the match.
The Hawks play their tourna-
ment of the year at the MAAC
Conference Championship,
which will be hosted in Celebra-
tion, FL at the Celebration Golf
Course. The tournament will be
Hartford’’s rst appearance as
Hartford recently moved into the
MAAC in July 2009. The match
will take place Friday, April 30.

It is not often that a player leads off
an inning with a ground-out, then gets
caught stealing for the second out in
that same inning.
However, in the third inning of the
Hartford Hawks’’ game against Quin-
nipiac Tuesday, that is exactly what
happened to centerelder Rodger
Wilmot. That inning, the Hawks plated
eight runs to build a cushion on their
way to a 10-4 victory over the Bobcats
at Fiondella Field in West Hartford.
Quinnipiac’’s starting pitcher George
Dummar got Wilmot to ground out to
short. He did not record another out.
The next nine Hartford batters
reached base. Seven of those batters
reached base with hits, including
a single by Wilmot. The Wilmot
hit mercifully signaled the end of
Dummar’’s day. All told, he gave up
eight runs, seven earned, on eight
hits after recording just one out in
the third inning.
The last run of the rally came on
a double steal, with Cory Beahm
taking home as Wilmot was gunned
down at second.
The offense for the Hawks
produced 11 hits throughout the
afternoon. Beahm, who reached
base in the third inning because of
catcher interference, was the only
Hawk without a hit.
By contrast, the Hawks managed
only 11 hits total in both games of a
doubleheader against Albany Sunday.
The Hawks were shut out in both of
those games, losing 8-0 and 2-0.
The Hawks recovered Monday,
beating the Great Danes 7-5.
Tuesday’’s win marked the rst time
the Hawks (8-20) have won back-to-
back games in April, and just the third
time this season.
