Hi good afternoon, to all!

This is the last part of the lesson, which is TEACHING

HEALTH. The last but not the least..why? Let me put
simply this way...
-Can you perform well in class if youre not healthy? No
-Can you comprehend well in your lessons if youre not
healthy? No
So, the legal basis of Teaching Health is found in the 1987
Constitution Article 2 and Article XIV. Just like any subject,
this is also an essential one, to assist the Filipino learners
in attaining, sustaining and promote lifelong wellness,
which is the intended outcome of teaching HEALTH. So
HEALTH LITERACY is indeed important.
HEALTH LITERACY is defined as the ability to make healthbased decisions in an informed way. Teaching HEALTH
LITERACY means giving the students the knowledge to
access and understand the information they need to
make health- based decisions.
Now, look at my graphic organizer, how can you describe
it? This is a BIG ARROW carrying the health- related
topics, targeting this one! The LEARNER itself! So,
understanding the health- related topics is correlated
better overall health outcomes.
Did you know that a person who understand HEALTH
CONCEPTS is better able to perform SELF- CARE and
PARTICIPATE IN PREVENTIVE CARE for themselves, their
families and school, the community and as well as
globally.

These are the 9 BIG TOPICS of HEALTH SUBJECT:

1. Growth and development- understanding the

physical and social changes of puberty are normal
and a part of life(we all know that at this stage,
students are very active and aggressive and Im sure
you encountered also a lot of physical changes and
also it emphasizes the understanding of human
sexuality, including feelings)
2. Personal Health- it comprises personal health habits,
personal health issues and concerns.( its very clear!
It demonstrates the proper ways of taking care of
ones health and good hygiene)
3. Nutrition- addresses the importance of eating healthy
and establishing eating habits as a way to enhance
health and prevent diseases. (So practice healthful
eating habits daily!)E.g. water and milk vs.
softdrinks. Be careful on what to choose
4. Substance use and abuse- demonstrates
understanding of the proper use of medicines to
prevent misuse and identifying the harmful effects of
tobacco, marijuana, steroids, alcohol and learning
resistance methods on avoiding this substance.( one
factor for this is PEER INFLUENCE, so be careful in
choosing your friends)
5. Family Health- it demonstrates the learner in
understanding healthy family habits and practices
e.g. sharing responsibilities in keeping the house
clean, preparing and eating healthy foods together,
exercising regularly as a family.
6. Disease prevention and control- understanding of
immunizations and vaccinations (which do you prefer
a fever for 1 day or a lifetime security defenses for
your child?) be wise in making decision, just dont
think for today, but think of the effect in the long run.

And understanding the nature and prevention of

communicable and non- communicable diseases e.g.
the most prevalent now the HIV, did you know that
as of Dec. 2015, the DOH said that Miss. Or. has the
highest rate of HIV-AIDS cases in northern Mindanao
region? Also on the list is Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte,
Mis. Occ. and Camiguin.so practice personal and
environmental measures to prevent and control
these diseases.

7. Injury prevention and safety- demonstrates

understanding of risks to ensure safety e.g. school
safety when using the stairs, playground safety like
do not climb or jump on high bars, observe slippery
floors , crossing safely in pedestrians, obey traffic
rules
