Management of lifecycles of buildings - October 2015

Introduction
This exercise has been done as part of the Advanced Course in Soil Mechanics, with the aim
of obtain different security factors with different conditions of a given slope, which consists of
the excavation of a channel next to a road.
All the calculations are made mainly with the use of GEOCALC and completing them with
hand calculations.
The guidelines of this exercise were the Eurocode 7 using the Finnish National Annex.

Short description of the soil profile and design of the structure

The soil composition beneath the road is showed in the picture below, first base material for
1.5 mtr and soft clay below, its strength properties were determined in three different
positions trough a vane test and laboratory testing. With this information, the soil was divided
into layers to simplify the calculation.
The slope of the channel is 1:2,5 and a water depth H1=2,0 m. The road embanquement
has a thickness of 0,5m and 10m long, the traffic load over is 10kN/m2, in addition we have
an extra load of 10kN/m2 due to the excavation machinery.

Parameters used in calculations

In the table below are presented the properties of the soil. Undrained shear strength
parameters are obtained from the vane test, which are affected by a reduction factor
depending on its wL. It is recommended to use the shear strength values of the first clay layer
for the base material as these may be higher. Index properties are obtained from the
laboratory test.

Analysis
Short term analyses in Ultimate Limit State
To do the analysis in ULS means that we are getting parameters to the limit state of stresses
that our slope will be able to resist without failing. For this calculation we use = 0 for all
layers but the road embanquement. We assume there is no water in the channel, the traffic
and machinery load are included.
