Solar Thermal Refrigeration by SolarCool

SolarCool solar thermal assisted refrigeration technologies
providing a lower carbon, efficient process for cooling either
retro-fit or new installation.
SolarCool technologies dramatically increase the efficiency
of the staged refrigeration system used for cooling the internal
open deck display units for the substantially sized SPAR
convenience store, based in Glen Easton, Leixlip, Co. Kildare,
Ireland. SolarCool's solar thermal cooling is an innovative,
patent-protected mix of compression and absorption
combined technology, designed to harvest the energy from
the sun. Stated simply - when the sun shines, the compressor
in the refrigeration system consumes a lot less electricity and
has a much easier, longer life.

Solution
Install SolarCool retro-fit
technologies onto the existing
staged refrigeration system and
the internal open deck cabinets.

Benefits
* Reduced electricity overheads
* Reduced ongoing equipment
* maintenance costs
* Increased comfort for customers
and staff
* Extended equipment lifespan
* Reduced CO2 emissions

A 4,000 sqft retail outlet occupied by

SPAR BWG, Ireland. incl. 22 linear
metres of open deck dairy, fruit &
veg and beverage refrigeration.
Challenge:
To significantly reduce the existing
refrigeration applications large
consumption of electricity and
thereby eliminate a large portion of
the business ever increasing
energy overheads - permanently.

While the SolarCool collectors mean significantly less electricity

is used to create the chilled air, Formula 1 derived products are
fitted to the open deck display units instore, preventing a lot
more of the chilled air from spilling into the aisle. This reduces
discomfort for both customers and staff as well as saving more
electricity.
Refrigeration is one of the largest overheads for businesses
after staff costs and the electricity it uses is a major source of
carbon emissions.
Brian Quinn, Director of the
Intel Labs Europe Innovation
Programme, said We have
successfully integrated the Intel
Quark technology with
SolarCools ingenious energy
solution at a local SPAR outlet
as an evaluation site.

Intel recognises the importance for businesses to reduce both costs and carbon emissions and
therefore values the opportunity to partner with SolarCool on this ground breaking evaluation site.
The reduction of CO2 emission is of particular significance to Intel as the company have a policy
commitment to reducing harmful emissions across the globe.
Emutex, a leading developer of software for Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, provided their
ubiworx software framework to enable an Intel Quark based IoT Gateway to perform
refrigeration energy monitoring. The power consumption is measured using power meters
connected to the industrial class Gateway. The readings are aggregated by the Gateway and
transferred to Emutexs ubiworx cloud service, where the valuable data is securely stored. An
initial user-friendly desktop and mobile app is available for SolarCool and BWG, to easily retrieve
stored data from the cloud service and display reports of daily/monthly power consumption trends
and forecasted energy costs.

Solar Thermal Refrigeration by SolarCool

For many the core appeal of SolarCool will be the significant reduction in average daily
consumption of electricity in this case calculated to be 41.5% for December/January compared
with pre-installation levels measured in September. In addition, using SolarCool also reduces the
owners exposure to future Carbon Taxation.
Leixlip benefits from 1.9 hours of direct sunlight a day through November/December, in
comparison to over triple that in the peak summer months*. So there are still plenty more
savings to come as the sun levels increase throughout the year

The graph to the left illustrates that the refrigeration

systems average daily savings in electricity
consumption are running at 41.5% compared with
levels before the installation of SolarCools
innovative technologies - this is achieved in the
depths of winters short days and in Ireland! This
showcases that while the solar collectors only
contribute savings when the sun shines, the instore
technologies are contributing 24/7. The graph is
based on data from measurements taken by multimeter before and from monitored consumption
after the installation.

Its early days, however the system is

tracking on target for an ROI of less
than 3 years with a projected saving of
EUR 5,450 in year one, and
approximately EUR 117,500 over the
next 15 years*.
* Based on current winter time savings and an estimated annual rise in
electricity costs of 5%
