TRAINERS’ PROFILE

Ir. Thum Peng Chew

BE (Hons) (Malaya), MEng Sc(Malaya), PEng(M), FIEM, MIEEE, MACEM,
TPC Solutions
He joined USM, Penang as an Electrical Engineer after graduating with a First Class (Hons.) degree in
Electrical Engineering from the University of Malaya in 1975. In 1977, he returned to University of Malaya,
Kuala Lumpur as a Tutor in Electrical Engineering & concurrently worked for his Master of Engineering
Science Degree, which he obtained in 1980 for research on Lightning Protection.

In 1980, he took up an Electrical Engineer's post with Tenaga Ewbank Perunding (M) Sdn Bhd & rose to the
post of Director of Tenaga Ewbank Preece (M) Sdn Bhd in 1990 taking charge of power system studies,
transmission & distribution projects, large industrial plants and buildings. His experience covers power
system planning & economics, part of which includes power system studies, design & implementation of
EHV overhead transmission lines, EHV substations, EHV underground & submarine cables & industrial
power systems projects. He was involved in the design of the lightning protection system & earthing & the
electrical equipment specification for the Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur. Since 1993, he was Director
of KTA Tenaga Sdn Bhd & Head of its Energy Department until he ventures in training and advisory services
in TPC Solutions.

His strength in training comes from his experience as a part-time lecturer in Electrical Power Engineering
Practice in the University of Malaya, & from seminars/workshops he conducted in the course of his
engineering practice career, for the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and the Association of
Consulting Engineers Malaysia on Switchgear, Transformers, Harmonics, Lightning Protection and Earthing.
He is an adjunct lecturer & was external examiner (final year projects) in power systems for Universiti
Teknologi Petronas, Malaysia. He has published locally & internationally in reputable journals & conferences
on the subjects of lightning, power systems, fuzzy systems & engineering management. He is the recipient
of two IEM awards (1980 & 2001) for outstanding technical papers published in the IEM Journal.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

For the power system engineer, engineering consultant, contractor,
operation and maintenance engineer and approving authority who
need to understand earthing systems for the purpose of their
application, design and design review & approval and operation &
maintenance. The course is thus beneficial to all electrical engineers
who are responsible for the planning, design, construction operation
and maintenance of commercial and industrial power systems, site
engineers and design review/approving persons of small and large
electrical substations and industrial plants.
