2. Second Part: Meeting Proper
Agenda:
o Introduction to Sudden Intended Acceleration (SUA) which
includes its definitions and other information about it
o Short discussion on the past SUA cases under Mitsubishi
Montero
First three SUA cases:
On December 16, 2010, a Montero suddenly
accelerated and crashed into a parked Mercedes

Benz, then side-swiped a wall and hit a palm tree in

Quezon City. The air bags did not work.

On August 15, 2011, a Montero headed to

Antipolo suddenly accelerated, narrowly missing

school children.

On March 15, 2012, a Montero coming out from

a garage suddenly accelerated ramming two cars

in front of a house 15 meters away in Ayala
Alabang.
o Showing of videos (silent videos) on the 2015 reported
SUA cases and then, explain the causes of SUAs
Pedal Entrapment, usually caused by old floor mats
Pedal Misapplication, which occurs when the driver
accidentally steps on the throttle instead of the brake
Mechanical/Electronic Failure, which isnt possible
even with a faulty fuel injector, due to multiple safety
checks performed by the Electronic Control Unit
(ECU)
a sticky accelerator pedal.
o Explanation of the Countermeasures of the company since
2011:

Mandatory use of authorized floor mats - to use

authorized floor mats that either have spikes or Velcro
that securely grip to the floor, a hook hole that fastens
to hooks on the floor of the Montero Sport, or clear
cut-out mats that will not get lodged under the throttle
pedal.
Technical service letter issuance (2012) regarding
installation of caution sticker for A/T Montero Sport This appears as a sticker near the shift knob that
advises drivers to step on the brake pedal whenever
the shift knob is moved between gears and to never
put pressure on the accelerator while shifting gears.
Product Enhancement: Brake Override System (BOS)
(October 2011) - This feature lets the ECU override
the system to shut off fuel injection to the engine. It
gives priority to brake application when the driver
mistakenly steps on the accelerator and brake pedals
at the same time.
Product Enhancement: installation of Shift Lock
System (September 2012) - This prevents the

transmission from being shifted out of the P (Park)

position unless the driver steps on the brake.
