TOPIC:Integrating GIS and Remote Sensing

in modelling urban sprawl: A case
study of Vijayawada

Introduction:Now a days, Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) are used at
all levels of decision making, policy interventions and many urban applications.
The important background study for implementing any of these action will be to
analyse the urban area and to predict the urban sprawl. With the available
technology this can be made possible by integrating remote sensing and GIS
techniques. Mathematically speaking, a modelling of urban sprawl must be done
using various mathematical techniques already available on hand from the
literature available.

Need for the study: Metrics for modelling urban sprawl are not quantified for most of the urban
centres in India.
Impact of a new city construction over another city has not been taken as a
parameter using GIS an RS in any of the studies so far done.
As capital city of Amaravathi is coming up , Vijayawada will be having a lot of
urban growth.
Urban growth conventionally in master plans is predicted using simple growth
rate method & housing demand , but if we can implement statistical analysis
and techniques for predicting it most of the urban issues will be solved.

Case study area :Vijayawada is a city on the banks of the Krishna River, in
the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation and the
headquarters of Vijayawada (urban) mandal in Krishna district of the state. The
city is one of the suburbs of the state capitalAmaravati, under the Andhra Pradesh
Capital Region, and the headquarters of Andhrapradesh capital Region
Development Authority ( APCRDA) .Vijayawada city is governed by Municipal
Corporation which comes under Vijayawada Metropolitan Region. The
Vijayawada city is located in Andhra Pradesh state of India. As per provisional
reports of Census India, population of Vijayawada in 2011 is 1,034,358; of which
male and female are 518,590 and 515,768 respectively. Although Vijayawada city
has population of 1,034,358; its urban / metropolitan population is 1,476,931 of
which 743,267 are males and 733,664 are females. The present city area is 61.88
sq.kms .

Flow of the study :Efforts will be made to predict potential urban development in accordance with
the existing and/or planned infrastructure with the use of Shannons entropy
method employed in GIS. The case study area is the city of Vijayawada in state
of Andhrapradesh. In this study,The Landsat imageries will be employed in
modelling urban sprawl in this area for the period. The time period will be chosen
based on the data available from the National Remote sensing center (NRSC),
Hyderabad. The parameters for urban sprawl will be identified from the literature
study and as well as from the case area. For accuracy assessment after the Image
classification is made Kappa statistics will be employed.

Intentions & Conclusion of the study:Urban growth is responsible of many consequent problems such as: increasing the
time travel, increasing the car dependency transportation, increasing the costs of
infrastructures, living and transportation and pollutions. Thus, a policy for better
management of the city and to decrease the urban sprawl problems is the vertical
development of the city and determine a set of certain and accurate policies
about the growth of city boundaries.
