You are on page 1of 38

ere are three 'tricks' to amaze your friends.

But the really clever trick is explaining to them why these

'tricks' are maths and not magic. Like all good magicians,
you should practise by trying them. Can you explain how
they work?
This trick will impress even your maths teacher.
Think of a number.
Double it.
Add

10.

Halve it.
Take away you original number.
Is your answer

5?

Try this with a different starting number. Did you get a

different result? Why does this happen?
Write the answer on a piece of paper without letting
anybody see it and seal it in an envelope. Have
somebody hold the envelope and at the end ask them to
open it and reveal the number you wrote at the
beginning. Wow, Magic!
Guess how much money people have in their
pockets!

Without giving you any information, ask a friend to count

the value of some coins and write the amount on a piece
of paper. Then ask your friend to:
Double the amount.
Add the first odd prime number to the new total.
Multiply the result by 1/4 of 20.
Subtract the lowest common multiple of 2 and 3.
For the grand finale, you ask for the final answer. Take off
the last digit and you will be able to work out how much
the coins are worth!
Amaze your audience by working out not only their
age but also what size shoe they wear! Wow them
even more by telling them how the maths works.
Give them the following directions but tell them not
to show you any calculations:
Write down your age.
Multiply it by 1/5 of 100.
Add on today's date (e.g. 2 if it's the 2nd of the
month).
Multiply by 20% of 25.
Now add on your shoe size (if it's a half size round to
a whole number).

Finally subtract 5 times today's date.

Show me you final answer!
Look at the answer, the hundreds are the age and the
remaining digits are the shoe size. If for instance
somebody shows you 1105, there are 11 hundreds - the
age, and the remaining digits 05 (or 5) show the shoe
size.
Now, how on earth does that work?

Multiply Up to 20X20 In Your Head

In just FIVE minutes you should learn to quickly multiply up to 20x20 in your
head. With this trick, you will be able to multiply any two numbers from 11 to 19 in
your head quickly, without the use of a calculator.
I will assume that you know your multiplication table reasonably well up to 10x10.
Try this:
Take 15 x 13 for an example.
Always place the larger number of the two on top in your mind.
Then draw the shape of Africa mentally so it covers the 15 and the 3 from the
13 below. Those covered numbers are all you need.
First add 15 + 3 = 18
Add a zero behind it (multiply by 10) to get 180.
Multiply the covered lower 3 x the single digit above it the "5" (3x5= 15)
Add 180 + 15 = 195.
That is It! Wasn't that easy? Practice it on paper first!

The 11 Rule

You likely all know the 10 rule (to multiply by 10, just add a
0 behind the number) but do you know the 11 rule? It is as
easy! You should be able to do this one in you head for any
two digit number. Practice it on paper first!
To multiply any two digit number by 11:
For this example we will use 54.
Separate the two digits in you mind (5__4).
Notice the hole between them!
Add the 5 and the 4 together (5+4=9)
Put the resulting 9 in the hole 594. That's it! 11 x
54=594
The only thing tricky to remember is that if the result of the addition is greater
than 9, you only put the "ones" digit in the hole and carry the "tens" digit from
the addition. For example 11 x 57 ... 5__7 ... 5+7=12 ... put the 2 in the hole and
add the 1 from the 12 to the 5 in to get 6 for a result of 627 ... 11 x 57 = 627
Practice it on paper first!

Finger Math: 9X Rule

To multiply by 9,try this:

(1) Spread your two hands out and place them on a desk or
table in front of you.
(2) To multiply by 3, fold down the 3rd finger from the left.
To multiply by 4, it would be the 4th finger and so on.
(3) the answer is 27 ... READ it from the two fingers on the
left of the folded down finger and the 7 fingers on the right
of it.
This works for anything up to 9x10!

Square a 2 Digit Number Ending in 5

For this example we will use 25

Take the "tens" part of the number (the 2 and add 1)=3
Multiply the original "tens" part of the number by the
new number (2x3)
Take the result (2x3=6) and put 25 behind it. Result the
answer 625.

Try a few more 75 squared ... = 7x8=56 ... put 25 behind it is 5625.
55 squared = 5x6=30 ... put 25 behind it ... is 3025. Another easy one! Practice it
on paper first!

Square 2 Digit Number: UP-DOWN Method

Square a 2 Digit Number, for this example 37:

Look for the nearest 10 boundary
In this case up 3 from 37 to 40.
Since you went UP 3 to 40 go DOWN 3 from 37 to 34.
Now mentally multiply 34x40
The way I do it is 34x10=340;
Double it mentally to 680
Double it again mentally to 1360
This 1360 is the FIRST interim answer.
37 is "3" away from the 10 boundary 40.
Square this "3" distance from 10 boundary.
3x3=9 which is the SECOND interim answer.
Add the two interim answers to get the final answer.
Answer: 1360 + 9 = 1369
With practice this can easily be done in your head.

Thanks To Ryan

The 11 Rule Expanded

You can directly write down the answer to any number

multiplied by 11.
Take for example the number 51236 X 11.
First, write down the number with a zero in front of it.
051236
The zero is necessary so that the rules are simpler.

Draw a line under the number.

Bear with me on this one. It is simple if you work
through it slowly. To do this, all you have to do this is
"Add the neighbor". Look at the 6 in the "units" position
of the number. Since there is no number to the right of
it, you can't add to its "neighbor" so just write down 6
below the 6 in the units col.
For the "tens" place, add the 3 to the its "neighbor" (the
6). Write the answer: 9 below the 3.
For the "hundreds" place, add the 2 to the its
"neighbor" (the 3). Write the answer: 5 below the 2.
For the "thousands" place, add the 1 to the its
"neighbor" (the 2). Write the answer: 3 below the 1.
For the "ten-thousands" place, add the 5 to the its
"neighbor" (the 1). Write the answer: 6 below the 5.
For the "hundred-thousands" place, add the 0 to the its
"neighbor" (the 5). Write the answer: 5 below the 0.
That's it ... 11 X 051236 = 563596

If math wasn't your best subject at school or

perhaps your feeling a little rusty, then use these
easy hacks to help you or your children. These
days it's very easy to use a calculator or go online
to find the answers, but that won't help you to

actually learn the methods of finding the answers.

These hacks will show you that math doesn't have
to be complicated when you know the little
tricks that the teachers didn't tell you about at
school!

Adding or subtracting fractions with the butterfly

method: This method is easy once you know how.
Write your fractions side by side. Diagonally draw
two wings to form an 'X', the multiplication sign.

Also draw two antennae at the top. Multiply the

numbers in each wing and put the answer inside
the antenna. Next, draw a body at the bottom and
multiple the two lower numbers, placing the
answer inside. Add or subtract the numbers in the
antennae (depending on whether your sum is add
or subtract) and this will give you the top number
of your answer. The number in the body section is
the bottom number of your answer. Simplify your
answer if needed, as seen in the middle example.

If you find fractions tricky, try this method know as

the 'backward Zorro'. Draw a line from the bottom
fraction number to the whole number. In this

example, the numbers are 4 and 24. You must work

out how many times 4 goes into 24 (6 times). Then
draw a line from the whole number to the top
fraction number. Take your first answer and
multiple it by the top number. So 6 x 3= 18, which
is your final answer. Don't forget to draw your line
from the top fraction number up to the answer to
form your backward 'Z'. A great method to help
your children.

Math can be terrifying for many people. This list will

hopefully improve your general knowledge of
mathematical tricks and your speed when you need to do
math in your head.

1. The 11 Times Trick

We all know the trick when multiplying by ten add 0 to

the end of the number, but did you know there is an
equally easy trick for multiplying a two digit number by 11?
This is it:
Take the original number and imagine a space between
the two digits (in this example we will use 52:
5_2
Now add the two numbers together and put them in the
middle:
5_(5+2)_2
That is it you have the answer: 572.
If the numbers in the middle add up to a 2 digit number,
just insert the second number and add 1 to the first:
9_(9+9)_9
(9+1)_8_9
10_8_9
1089 It works every time.
2. Quick Square

If you need to square a 2 digit number ending in 5, you

can do so very easily with this trick. Mulitply the first digit
by itself + 1, and put 25 on the end. That is all!
252 = (2x(2+1)) & 25
2x3=6
625
3. Multiply by 5
Most people memorize the 5 times tables very easily, but
when you get in to larger numbers it gets more complex
or does it? This trick is super easy.
Take any number, then divide it by 2 (in other words, halve
the number). If the result is whole, add a 0 at the end. If it
is not, ignore the remainder and add a 5 at the end. It
works everytime:
2682 x 5 = (2682 / 2) & 5 or 0
2682 / 2 = 1341 (whole number so add 0)
13410
Lets try another:

5887 x 5
2943.5 (fractional number (ignore remainder, add 5)
29435

4. Multiply by 9
This one is simple to multiple any number between 1
and 9 by 9 hold both hands in front of your face drop the
finger that corresponds to the number you are multiplying
(for example 93 drop your third finger) count the
fingers before the dropped finger (in the case of 93 it is 2)
then count the numbers after (in this case 7) the answer
is 27.
5. Multiply by 4

This is a very simple trick which may appear obvious to

some, but to others it is not. The trick is to simply multiply
by two, then multiply by two again:
58 x 4 = (58 x 2) + (58 x 2) = (116) + (116) = 232
6. Calculate a Tip
If you need to leave a 15% tip, here is the easy way to do
it. Work out 10% (divide the number by 10) then add that
number to half its value and you have your answer:
15% of $25 = (10% of 25) + ((10% of 25) / 2)
$2.50 + $1.25 = $3.75
7. Tough Multiplication
If you have a large number to multiply and one of the
numbers is even, you can easily subdivide to get to the
answer:
32 x 125, is the same as:
16 x 250 is the same as:
8 x 500 is the same as:
4 x 1000 = 4,000

8. Dividing by 5
Dividing a large number by five is actually very simple. All
you do is multiply by 2 and move the decimal point:
195 / 5
Step1: 195 * 2 = 390
Step2: Move the decimal: 39.0 or just 39
2978 / 5
step 1: 2978 * 2 = 5956
Step2: 595.6
9. Subtracting from 1,000
To subtract a large number from 1,000 you can use this
basic rule: subtract all but the last number from 9, then
subtract the last number from 10:

1000
-648
step1: subtract 6 from 9 = 3
step2: subtract 4 from 9 = 5
step3: subtract 8 from 10 = 2
answer: 352
10. Assorted Multiplication Rules
Multiply by 5: Multiply by 10 and divide by 2.
Multiply by 6: Sometimes multiplying by 3 and then 2 is
easy.
Multiply by 9: Multiply by 10 and subtract the original
number.
Multiply by 12: Multiply by 10 and add twice the original
number.
Multiply by 13: Multiply by 3 and add 10 times original
number.
Multiply by 14: Multiply by 7 and then multiply by 2
Multiply by 15: Multiply by 10 and add 5 times the original
number, as above.
Multiply by 16: You can double four times, if you want to.
Or you can multiply by 8 and then by 2.

Multiply by 17: Multiply by 7 and add 10 times original

number.
Multiply by 18: Multiply by 20 and subtract twice the
original number (which is obvious from the first step).
Multiply by 19: Multiply by 20 and subtract the original
number.
Multiply by 24: Multiply by 8 and then multiply by 3.
Multiply by 27: Multiply by 30 and subtract 3 times the
original number (which is obvious from the first step).
Multiply by 45: Multiply by 50 and subtract 5 times the
original number (which is obvious from the first step).
Multiply by 90: Multiply by 9 (as above) and put a zero on
the right.
Multiply by 98: Multiply by 100 and subtract twice the
original number.
Multiply by 99: Multiply by 100 and subtract the original
number.
Bonus: Percentages
Yanni in comment 23 gave an excellent tip for working out
percentages, so I have taken the liberty of duplicating it
here:
Find 7 % of 300. Sound Difficult?

Percents: First of all you need to understand the word

Percent. The first part is PER , as in 10 tricks per
listverse page. PER = FOR EACH. The second part of the
word is CENT, as in 100. Like Century = 100 years. 100
CENTS in 1 dollar etc. Ok so PERCENT = For Each
100.
So, it follows that 7 PERCENT of 100, is 7. (7 for each
hundred, of only 1 hundred).
8 % of 100 = 8. 35.73% of 100 = 35.73
But how is that useful??
Back to the 7% of 300 question. 7% of the first hundred is
7. 7% of 2nd hundred is also 7, and yep, 7% of the 3rd
hundred is also 7. So 7+7+7 = 21.
If 8 % of 100 is 8, it follows that 8% of 50 is half of 8 , or 4.
Break down every number thats asked into questions of
100, if the number is less then 100, then move the decimal
point accordingly.
EXAMPLES:
8%200 = ? 8 + 8 = 16.
8%250 = ? 8 + 8 + 4 = 20.
8%25 = 2.0 (Moving the decimal back).

15%300 = 15+15+15 =45.

15%350 = 15+15+15+7.5 = 52.5
Also its usefull to know that you can always flip percents,
like 3% of 100 is the same as 100% of 3.
35% of 8 is the same as 8% of 35.

eflection of you
There is a story about a father and his young son who were
walking through the mountains. Suddenly, the son fell, hurting his
leg on a rock. He screamed, 'AAhhhh!'
To his surprise, he heard a voice repeating, 'AAhhhh!'
This made him even more curious. So, he yelled, 'Who are you?'
Back came the same answer, 'Who are you?'
Feeling a bit perturbed by this response, he yelled out, 'Coward!'
Back came the same reply, 'Coward!'
He looked at his father and asked: 'What's going on?' His father
smiled and said: 'Son, pay attention.'
Looking across the valley, his father yelled to the mountain, 'I
admire you!' The voice answered: 'I admire you!'

Again the man cried out: 'You are a champion!' The voice replied,
'You are a champion!'
The boy was amazed, but he was very confused. So, his father
explained...
'You are only hearing an echo, the sound of our voices bouncing
back from the mountains. However, this really is how life works. It
returns to you what you think,
say, and do!
Our lives are a reflection of our thoughts and actions. If you want
more love in your world, create more love in your heart. If you
want to be treated with kindness, treat others with kindness. If
you want more competence on your team, become more
competent.
This relationship applies to everything, in all aspects of life. Life
will give to you, everything you give to it, only it will give you
even more in return. Your life is not ever a coincidence. Each
moment is a reflection of you!'
The son listened and grew in understanding, and through the
following years, he witnessed the truth of these words in his life!

There will be moments when the only thing left is for you to question your existence. Life can b
damned hard for each of us.

There are always days when we get so lonely and depressed. When we cry. When the world h
lost its colors. When the rest of the world is happy and you are not.

There will be times when we lose all reasons for living; and problems will seem so hard that we
wish there was no such thing as tomorrow.

But then again, we should also know, that they are just another bitterness in life trying to twist t
personage in each of us; and corrupt our perceptions about life.

When these times happen, do not succumb to the temptations of giving up. Yes, to live is to su
and the only way to be happy is to suffer willingly.

Often, the worst of times yields the best lessons in life. We have to go on in life's extremes. We
don't have to give up. As the famous poet, philosopher, and artist Kahlil Gibran said,

"When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that, in truth, you are wee
for that which has been your delight."

Have you ever had an epiphany? One of those aha moments where something just clicks for you?
Maybe its something youve been struggling with
for a long time, or maybe it was a piece of advice
you learned from a friend. Whatever the source of
our insight, its these moments that bring us to a
deeper understanding of our world. The better
understanding we have of life, the more we live in
the truth.
Below are 33 of the most powerful lessons in my

Have you ever been listening to a friend, loved one, or co-worker

complain about something that someone else did to them, only to

realize that this person is guilty of doing the same thing?

Years ago I heard that life reflects back to you the way you are.

Hmmm. Im not going to go so far as to say that I agree with that

100% because people get treated in ways that they would not treat
others. It seems like sometimes life is just showing us the differences
in people, and it is not always pretty and not to our liking. HoweverI
do know that there are times when I know this reflection thing to be

true. Of course its easier to spot it when it is happening to someone

else. Im not talking about the pleasant stuff I think most of us feel
that we deserve what we consider to be the good stuff.
39.

I remember when I first put the question to myself. I dont

remember what the specific details were of the incident but I do

remember it involved my supervisor at the time. I think she had
reacted in a way that I didnt like. What I do remember is that I posed
this question to myselfDo I ever act/react like that? After quickly
thinking about my work relationships my answer was a definite NO.
So then I asked, Do I react this way at home? Ding, ding, ding,
winner, winner! Im not one of those fly off the handle when angry
kind of people. Sure, I had moments of frustration at work but
nothing made me lose my temper at work. But what I did realize was
that when I got really, really upset over something concerning my
hubby, I made sure I let him know about it immediately because I
could not stand to let the uncomfortable emotion continue to churn
inside of me. No, I didnt yell or scream to make my point but still he
felt attacked and went on the defensive. My thinking was that I just
wanted to get my concerns resolved but looking back I see there was
more to it than that. I realize now that I also wanted to get the
energy out of me. Once I became aware of my behavior, I worked on
changing it.

We dont see things as they are, we see them as we are.

The other times I witnessed this reflection thing was with other

people. People who lied to or deceived someone else were in turn lied
to or deceived by someone else.

But yet these same people would

not make the connection. Yes, people will lie to you, but the stuff Im
talking about is definitely of the reaping what you sow nature.

42.

Another example is hearing someone say how their sibling just

will not listen to them about anything, they just do what they want
and what they are doing is not working. Well I really had to bite my
tongue on that one. My thinking was, I really feel for you, now you
know how I felt when you didnt listen to me and it all ended badly
because you didnt. Instead I just calmly said, Yeah, I know it can
be very frustrating.
43.

Then there were the times when I listened to the person with

anger issues complain about how their sibling displays anger. The
truth wasthese two people displayed anger in the same way. One day
I was actually able to calmly and lovingly express my observation and
the impact of just letting anything fly out of your mouth (not that I
hadnt expressed the impact of words before). You know how some
people can dish it out but cant take the same in return well this
person is like that.
44.

Our children can also reflect traits that we have but dont see in

ourselves. When the Universe shows us the way we are, it may come
in a way or from someone we dont expect. It is not necessarily going
to come from the person or entity you treated in a specific way. So,
the next time something (a situation) or person upsets you, ask
yourself if something is being reflected back to you.

Food for Thought:

If youre looking for inner peace from the outside world,

youre not going to get that. The inner peace starts with you
looking at you from the inside. Understanding that everything
that comes to you is what you are. Everything from friends to
boyfriends to the job you get its all a direct reflection of
what you are on the inside. Mary J. Blige
