Task 1: Area of Study - Discovery

Weighting: 25%

Task date: 3 rd December, 2015

Part A - Imaginative Writing (15%) Hand-in
Select one of the images provided and compose a narrative exploring the idea that discovery can be evoked by
curiosity, necessity or wonder. Your narrative may reflect a metaphorical interpretation of the image but your choice
should still be clear. Please indicate your choice of image at the beginning of your response.
Length: 1200 words max. Do not exceed this word limit.
Presentation: Times new Roman 12 point, single spacing. No plastic sleeves or folders. Include a word count at the
end of your response.
Part B - Essay (10%) In-class
You are required to respond to an essay question given to you in class, with close reference to your prescribed and
ONE related text. The question will be drawn from the rubric and focus on the new possibilities offered by discovery. You
will be given 50 minutes to complete your essay response. You will not be allowed to refer to any notes, texts or
resource materials.
Criteria for the task. You will be assessed on your ability to:

demonstrate an understanding of the concept of discovery and the link with new possibilities and curiosity,
necessity or wonder
demonstrate an understanding of how composers represent concepts of discovery
communicate effectively in different forms for different audiences and purposes
