1.1

Function
The JLN-628 Doppler Current Meter is a fish-school detector with the ten-inch, high-brightness color monitor
and a NWU-229 Color Display Unit. The JLN-628 system analyzes ultrasonic signals bounced back and forth
between the transducer and obstacles in water, such as the bottom, fish and/or plankton. The system displays
information useful for fish-finding, such as absolute and relative tidal currents, groundspeed (AUTO mode)
and waterspeed (MANUAL WATER mode). Furthermore, four-directional echoed images can simultaneously
be visualized in the display unit from the starboard ahead, starboard astern, port ahead and port stern. The
system also features a graph-drawing function for water temperatures.
The monitor uses a high definition 10 inch color Braun tube to display 5 screens; tidal currents, ship speed,
fish-schools, graph and course.
In the Tidal Current Displays (1/2), the tidal current direction and speed and the ship's course can be displayed
according to the three preset water-depth layers and a preset range of 2 to 200 meters.
The Ship Speed Display can also function as a speedometer of the ship with numerical and graphical
indications where the travel distance and ship's course are also displayed.
The FishFinder Display provides the four-directional FishFinder screen, and the number of screens to be
displayed can be selected from four, two or one. Ordinary FishFinder screen images can also be obtained with
the sensitivity adjustment and defoaming volume controls, and the tidal current information can
simultaneously be displayed in the finder display.
Graph Display simultaneously shows three layers of changes in tidal current direction and tidal current speed,
ship speed, depth and water temperature in graphs along with elapsed time.
Course Display simultaneously shows the current directions and speeds vectors of three layers on own track.

1.2

Features
The JLN-628 Doppler Current Meter features:

Bright and Clean Screen Image

Precise crystal-clean images produced by the ten-inch, high-brightness, high-definition color CRT.
Large-size text display for important data helps facilitate quick decision making.

Easy Operation
Most operations are carried out with touch keys on the screen, thereby operations from the operation panel are
minimized.
Settings on screen are operated with easy-to-understand menu indications. The initial display can always be
recalled by touching any key after completation of a setting.

Four-directional FishFinder Screen Function

While moving ahead, four-directional echoed images can be shown simultaneously from the starboard ahead,
starboard astern, port ahead and port astern. Compared to fish finders that detect fish only directly beneath the
boat, a much wider range can be searched, such as movements of schools of fish and the slope of the sea floor
can be easily determined.
You can also measure the tidal currents while showing the four-directional FishFinder Screen.

Tidal Current, Ship Speed, Depth and Water Temperature Graph Display Function
You can display a maximum of 24 hours of past conditions. It is easy to confirm changes in the tidal current,
ship speed, depth and water temperature over elapsed time. However, it is necessary to input data from a
separate water thermometer for the water temperature display.
Detailed values on the graph can be displayed with the with a cursor search.

Tidal Current & Course Display Function

The auto course can display three levels of tidal currents and tidal current speed and direction. However, it is
necessary to input separate GPS positioning data for the auto course display.
Of the three levels in the auto course display the echo strength of any one of them can be displayed in color.
Detailed values on the graph can be displayed with the with a cursor search.

3. Installation

3.3 Mounting the Transducer

Mounting Location
The ultra sound waves that are used to measure ship speed and tidal current can not
make correct measurements if air bubbles are present effecting the transfer of sound
waves. It is necessary to avoid the source of bubbles and the stream of bubbles
when selecting a position to mount the transducer. We recommend consulting with
the manufacturers of the boat, as information about the actual situation for boats
with a similar hull structure is important when selecting a position to mount the
device.
Refer to the following basic explanation about bubbles.
1. Conditions of the source and flow of bubbles
Fig 3-3 shows a conceptual drawing of the condition of the source and flow of
bubbles near the hull, however there are complex differences due to such conditions as the hull shape, ship speed and draft.

Side view

Bottom view

Cross section of hull

Fig 3-3
2. Relation between hull shape and bubbles
The following is a representational example of the conditions of the source and
flow of bubbles along the bottom of a boat, such conditions as the hull shape, ship
speed and draft create various characteristics.
2.1 For hulls that have a deep draft
There is a small amount of bubbles along the bottom of a boat with a deep draft,
which allows a wide tolerance for a transducer mounting position. (See Fig 3-4)

Water line
Deep draft

Fig 3.4

3. Installation

13

2.2 For high-speed hulls with a cut-away stern

Boats with a cut-away stern for high speeds, and high horsepower forward-mounted
engines, have increased propeller noise due to high RPMs, which tends to distribute bubbles toward the center of the hull. This allows only a narrow tolerance for
the transducer mounting position. (See Fig 3-5)
Engine

Fig 3-5
2.3 For hulls that are broad of beam in the bow or amidships
Due to poor lateral dispersion of bubbles along the bottom of the boat, the thickness of bubbles may reach or exceed 200 mm (100 to 150 mm is considered normal
for other hulls). Therefore, it is often necessary to increase the extension from the
hull more than is usual. (See Fig 3-6)
Cross section of hull

Narrow beam hull

Broad beam hull

Fig 3-6
2.4 For hulls that have a ball type bow keel
For this kind of high-speed hull design, bubbles are distributed widely along the
bow and amidships of the hull. While it looks like a ball shape, that is not always
the case, it needs to be checked, and if so the tolerance for the transducer mounting
position increases. (See Fig 3-7)

This area produces few

bubbles.

Fig 3-7
2.5 For hulls that have narrowed bow or stern outboard
For high-speed FRP boats, the engine horsepower has been increased to increase
the speed, the following cautions should be taken.
a) There is a large flow of bubbles along the bottom of the boat due to the shape of
the keel, and the shape of the bow.
b) For many boats that have a cut-away stern the engine has been moved forward,
which increases the noise from the propeller.
c) If the engine is oversized for the hull, the high RPMs (2000 to 3000 rpm) increase the vibration noise in the hull.
For these reasons the correct placement of the transducer on this type of hull is
extremely difficult, refer to the mounting position on boats in which the operation
of the transducer is good for particularly for the same hull shape and the same area.

14

3. Installation

Mounting Procedure
1) Installation Precautions
Maintain a distance of at least 300 mm between the tank and the keel.
Install the tank at about the same height as the keel.
Install net protector bars and plates before and aft of the tank.
Install the tank so that the current plate is parallel with the waterline.

2) Ship's bottom tank on fiber-reinforced plastic ships

The NKF-766T bottom tank is for iron vessels. When installing the tank
on fiber-reinforced plastic ships, ask a shipyard to install the tank
referring to the dimensions shown below.
On small iron vessels, also, the influence of air bubbles can be
reduced by increasing the size of the current plate. Increase the size of
the current plate referring to the following dimensions.

Measure Fault Symbol

When this symbol lights up, tidal current data measurement is disabled for any of
the following reasons.
(1) The depth-range setting of each layer is greater than 70% of the actual depth of
water.
To remedy, readjust the depth-range setting for 70% or smaller than the depth
of water.
Example from the Fig. 4-5
The depth-range setting for the C Layer now shows 100m. This means that
tidal current measurement is disabled when the depth of water (Now, DEPTH
shows 400m) becomes 70m or lower.
(2) The depth-range setting of each layer falls between 2m to 4m if the actual
depth of water is 40m or deeper.
To remedy, readjust the depth-range setting of each layer for 5m or deeper.

M Tidal Current Measurement

Tidal current speed is measured relative to the sea bottom or C layer (or fixed
layer).
Definition: Absolute tidal current speeds are speeds measured relative to the sea
bottom (ground).
Fig 4-6 shows how the absolute tidal current speed at layers A, B, and C are
measured relative to the sea bottom and displayed in the graphic display.

1. Own course (course plot)

The course is plotted on the display based on GPS positioning information or
Topplar ships speed information.
The course color is displayed in an arbitrary color (there are six possible
colors) also it is possible to display the measurements from any level (A, B, C)
depending on the intensity of the diffusion, separated by colors into 4 levels.
2. Own ship positioning
Own ship positioning display is an easy to see red circle.
3. Trajectory vector
The present trajectory direction is displayed in a dashed white line from the
present ships position.
4. Tidal current vector (3 levels)
The current vector is displayed in a uniform interval. The vector is displayed in
the same format as the tidal current display. Absolute current is displayed as a
solid line, relative currents are displayed as dashed lines. Further, each vector
display can be turned on or off and if they cannot be measured they are not
displayed.
