Our text was "More Than A Carpenter"

One was

by Josh McDowell.

At

the close of the course I took a survey. Of thfe 42 who answered the survey, 29 agreed with
McDowell that Jesus was God.

Six of the remaining ones said they did not know and six other

persons said they didn't believe but that the study had caused them to think more deeply
God than they ever

had before.

Shinto Priest^ an acquaintance of mine, who occupied one of the six beds in that ward. So, to
keep peace in the ward, my patient sent the 'mums' home for his wife and child to enjoy. Have
you considered recently what it means to be "set free by Christ"?

On January 2nd we had our second Engagement' Ceremony in Japan. Sachiko Hashimoto, who is
set to graduate from Osaka Bible Seminary this spring was engaged to Rodney Friese. Sachiko's

mother has attended church on occasion, but most! of her relatives and 20 other guests were in
the church for their first time. So, this, too, was an important pre-evangelism opportunity.

Probably you did not know that overseas missionaries receive the Lookout, the Christian

Standard, Horizons and the Restoration Herald free of charge. We certainly do appreciate such
gifts coming into our home regularly. Of course Horizons is basically a missions Journal, but
here of late we have been pleased to note each of the other periodicals including articles of
'world evangelism'. And we all have one important thing in common, wherever we are in this
world. As Bob Russell reiterated recently, "the continuing need is for trained leaders in the

churches." We pray that our Japanese church is miking headway in this direction.
I believe that we are taking a big step here in the Tokyo area.

For the first time in

many years we have Joint efforts toward establishing a church. Three "Timothys" have gone out
from the little Arakawa Church. One of these Keichi Suzuki returned to be it's minister. With
the third man graduating this spring the Bill Tuifners begin the new church at Kotesashi. Akira

Ishii is the minister and the Tokyo Churches will work together to provide his support.

The

Arakawa Church will serve as the central office. ^ Pray this is the beginning of greater things.

She met professors and friends who have helped her to get scholarships and

follow (July 24-26) will be Sherman V. and Joyce Nichols, presently serv
ing at the Central Christian Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Sher
man's general topic will be "Problems That Plague The Saints". 'Sherm'
and Joyce will also bring greetings to Fujiyoshida City from the mayor of
Colorado Springs which is it's sister city. The mayor of Fujiyoshida is
arranging a big welcome for them during their exchange visit.
Jesus declared that "The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that

which was lost". (Luke 19:10) We can identify with His task. We are making ourselves avail
able to those who are troubled, to those who have troubled children, who unwittingly hinder

their children's searching, or who are seeking fpr something, they know not what.

Can you

imagine a brain surgeon being told by an elderly'lady that his teen-age daughter must be given
adequate treatment right away or she would die? It is a psychological problem brought on by
home and community pressures and neither father nor mother would admit a problem. Yet, their
daughter was withdrawing herself and withering away. We are trying to show them that love is
the answer; that love must be applied along with discipline in the home.

What a very powerful

medicine is love.

Speaking of love, Ruth Yamazaki was a minister's daughter who attended Obirin College a
few years ago. She had gone into welfare studies and was observing physio-therapy treatments
in the Philipines. While she was swimming one day she rushed to the aid of two persons who
were in danger of drowning, and saved them both. In the process she lost her own life.
As
former enemies, the Philipinos now know the truth of Jesus' words "greater love hath no man
than this that a man lay down his life for his friend". We are hoping that the Philipine
lady sitting next to Kathleen on the plane heard the story, too. For she spoke of her inabil

ity to get rid of a terrible hatred for the Japanese. Again, love triumphs over hate.
Just about ten of our missionaries in Japan minister regularly to congregations. The Sannobara Church where we minister has a budget of some $10,000.
One fifth of that amount goes
to~our~missi"unary'iTi~Thailand, Osaka Bible Seminary and to the New Church effort being put forth in the Tokorozawa area. They have also taken over responsibility for part of my salary
as well. Pray for their vision and outreach to expand.

All of you remember Sarah Burney who ser

ved both at Machida and at Isehara when each of

our families took furloughs. Sarah and her

husband, Geof Acker are beginning right now to

make plans to come to work in Japan.

In fact
we are hoping that they can arrive by Christmas

so that we can take at least a three-month

furlough. They will supply for us. They have

been living and working in Ontario.
We com
mend them to you and to all the churches as
worthy of your support. We all have been pray
ing "the Lord of the harvest that he will send
forth laborers into his harvest".

He is

now

moving them to come and answer that prayer.

They now have one son, John, who is just one
year old. Write and give them your encourage
ment.

Speaking of Hark, he and Lynn and the chiIdren arrived safely back in Japan on July 22nd. With the All-Japan
Convention beginning that day, we just had to welcome them at the airport before leaving. Needless to say, we were
overjoyed, too, to have three 'foreign* children in Sannobara's Vacation Bible School a few days later.

We arrived at the Convention just in time for Hideko Domen'a special music.

She was the main soloist this year.

Some of you remember her disc record "His Eye Is On The Sparrow". She now has a cassette available with three Eng
lish songs along with nine in Japanese.

It is titled, "The Lord Is My Light".
