TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY

not so obvious, are covered in the class. Techniques such as shooting from a speeding car,

will converge on the 2nd floor of the TSC
for the 2016 Stamp Show held on April 2
and 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday,
and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Stamp collecting dates back to the
first official use of a stamp in 1842 by
Great Britain. The hobby was inspired
by parents who were interested in finding a rewarding, educational and timeconsuming activity for their children.
Parents purchased albums with spaces
for a few stamps from every country in
the world.
Today, the assortment of albums is
abundant, and one can find albums that
cover a specific interest, such as butterflies, or a distinct hobby, such as antique
cars. Many such albums can be found at
stamp shows or obtained by a dealer for a
collector.

Stamp collecting can accommodate

every budget from the affordable and
simple process of soaking stamps off envelopes, drying them, placing a glued
hinge on the back, and securing it in an
album - to the costly adventure of seeking expensive catalogs, exhibits, and investments.
If you inherited a collection but lack
the collectors instinct, you may seek
dealers at the Stamp Show and the
TS&CC members to provide assistance
to help resolve issues about your collection(s).
The Tallahassee Stamp & Cover Club
is a nonprofit organization with one of its
missions to assist collectors of all ages
with the philatelic hobby. The club meets
on the second Tuesday of each month, at
7 p.m., in the dining hall of the Tallahassee Senior Center. Visitors are welcome.

Senior athletes turn energies to

powerlifting for strength, balance
NICK GANDY
FLORIDA SPORTS FOUNDATION

While Senior Games and powerlifting are two words that dont often
come to mind in the same sentence, its a
sport event that has growing participation on both a local and state level, at the
Capital City Senior Games and the Florida Senior Games.
The host venue for the Capital City
Senior Games, Premier Health and Fitness, has been one of the benefactors of
this increase, according to Len Harvey,
Director of the complex. Regarding the
increase in participation, Harvey states
whats really nice is seeing people participate for the first time and realizing
how important it is to stay fit as you get
older. People want to be active and
strength training is one of the major
components you need.
Tallahassees Dawn Brown can lay
claim to the title first female powerlifter in the Capital City Senior Games
and the only female competitor in 2014.
She made a mental note that four women
powerlifters participated in 2015 and anticipates an increase in more women
stepping up to the bar in 2016, and in
future Senior Games. Regarding the increase in women powerlifters, Brown
states, its not like Im not out cajoling
my friends into joining me in powerlifting.
While splitting time between Tallahassee and Buena Vista, Colorado,
Brown admits that powerlifting has
helped her in other sports such as hiking,
throughout both states, and mountain
climbing during her time in Colorado.

Powerlifting helps strengthen every

part of your body from the heels of your
feet to your hands on the bar, according
to the 67-year old Brown. Being strong
is beneficial in whatever you do, Brown
says. Its valuable in your day-to-day
life. Good muscle strength equals better
balance which means less falls as you
get older.
When youre bench pressing, every
muscle in your body tenses up, says
Brown. All three disciplines of powerlifting (bench press, squat and deadlift)
strengthen your core and thats important in any activity. From lifting weights,
to lifting heavy branches during trail
maintenance duty in the woods, powerlifting is beneficial to Browns life.
Michael Mitts, a former Florida State
University philosophy professor, competed in the Capital City Senior Games
locally and the Florida Senior Games Powerlifting in Clearwater for the first
time in 2015. Mitts lifted a combined 964
pounds in the bench press, deadlift and
squat, to become one of 27, out of a total
of 78 powerlifting athletes, to compete in
all three events at the Florida Senior
Games. His best squat was 308 pounds;
his best bench press topped 275 pounds
and had a deadlift of 380 pounds.
The totals came as no surprise for
someone who has been lifting weights
for 40 years. Mitts has been involved in a
variety of sporting endeavors all of his
life and works out at two separate athletic facilities on a weekly basis. His senior
games and fitness goals are simply to
improve.

Leaders grow TALL, inspire others

AUDREY BYRNE
COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

If your actions inspire others to

dream more, learn more, do more and
become more, you are a leader, according to John Quincy Adams. Are you inspired to be involved in the community?
Do you dream about providing solutions
to community challenges? If you answered yes to one these questions, and
you are age 50 or older, we invite you to
apply for Tallahassee Active Lifelong
Leaders (TALL).
TALL is an 8-week program in which
classmates meet with area leaders, go on
site visits to learn about our communitys cultural, political, safety, legal & justice, educational, health, human services
and other public and private initiatives
that serve our community. By gaining insight of community resources and
broadening knowledge of community relationships, TALL graduates become
equipped to enhance positive change and
employ creative solutions through advocacy and volunteerism. TALL graduates
find the experience to be self-enriching,
intellectually stimulating and fun.
Jim Mau, a class 8 graduate, believes
that the TALL program provide an extraordinary opportunity to learn about
the workings of the city and county, and
was beneficial to him meeting other
people who believe that [this helps] us
improve our community. Joan Tolliver,
also of class 8 said that, participating in
the TALL group was one of the best experiences Ive had since moving to Tallahassee. TALL, Tolliver continued, has
helped me grow in my desire to be more
of a citizen in this great city.
If you would like to grow a bit taller,
then apply to be a member of TALL Class
9, which begins Tuesday, April 19. Classes meet every Tuesday thru June 7, 2016,
from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Applicants are selected based on their interest in meeting the
programs goal of equipping active older

light. Mitts want no red lights.

Mitts received two red lights in the
Florida Senior Games in Clearwater last
December while trying a drastic increase from 275 pounds on the first lift to
297 pounds on the second and third lift in
the Bench Press. I was a beast at the
Capital City Senior Games but found out
what time it was when I got to the state
level, he said. There were so many talented athletes at the Florida Senior
Games, I was up against guys who have
competed on many different levels.
Mitts agrees with Brown about the

health benefits involved in powerlifting

and all aspects of physical fitness as it
strengthens the wrists, hands, ankles
and knees, all parts of the body needed to
be strong as you age.
Harvey, a Florida Senior Games powerlifter himself, said a lot of people
come to us because they feel like theyre
aging and their strength drops off. Harvey continues, these athletes got to top
of mountain strength-wise in their
mid-30s early 40s, and are now on the
backside of the mountain as they become
50 and above. One way to slow down the

decline in strength is through strength

training.
Tallahassee senior athletes along with
senior athletes around the state have the
opportunity to become their personal
best at events such as the annual Capital
City Senior Games (held this past week)
and other Florida Senior Games Series
Qualifiers year round. The 2016 Florida
Senior Games, to be held in Clearwater,
December 3-11, is a qualifier for the 2017
National Senior Games in Birmingham,

Facts*: For most seniors, Medicare services

begin at 65 years of age. There are two types
of Medicare coverage, Traditional Medicare
and Medicare Advantage Plans. Selection of
the type of plan coverage begins when the
person first signs up for Medicare. Under
normal circumstances, plans may be changed
by the person during the Annual Enrollment
Period. This period begins October 15 and runs
through December 7 with the new coverage
period beginning January 1 of the following
year.

coverage program. Low income beneficiaries
may qualify for a special Medicaid option for
assisting with Medicare premiums, deductibles
and coinsurance payments.
Unless covered by an employers group plan
which is equivalent to Medicare Part B
coverage or under other, limited situations,
failure to enroll in Medicare Part B by age 65
can result in fiscal penalties.
There are 3,661,812 Florida residents over age
