Understanding The
Requirements

This guide is designed to help you understand the legislative

requirements for ECDIS training which can seem quite
complicated, not helped by the fact that individual flag states
have different interpretations.
The regulations split training into two areas - generic and familiarisation - that are derived

from the IMOs Standards of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping committee (STCW)
and the ISM code. If youre using ECDIS as the primary means of navigation then youll
need to do both.

To solve your training headache, Martek have developed the iTRAIN proposition which
is delivered globally and online in partnership with the worlds best training providers Safebridge and the ECDIS Training Consortium (ETC).

Generic Training Combined with Familiarisation Training

The generic training is delivered over 5 days and is integrated with the iECDIS type
specific familiarisation training to fulfil both training requirements of the regulations.

The 40 hour modular course consists of 2 days theory, 2 days type specific and 1 day

simulator exercises followed by evaluation based on the IMO Model Course 1.27. This
covers 37 topics divided into 5 subjects and is mandatory for officers of the watch on
ECDIS fitted ships:

1. Elements of ECDIS 10.5 hours

2. Watch standing with ECDIS 8 hours

3. ECDIS route planning 7 hours

4. ECDIS targets, charts & system 8.5 hours

5. ECDIS responsibility & assessment 6 hours

Combining the two is a pragmatic innovative way of complying with the full ECDIS
training requirements in a single course.

Familiarisation Training
This is type specific equipment training to become competent and feel confidence

in the operation of iECDIS. It can be taken either with the generic training or as a
standalone course. As a standalone course its generally delivered over 2 days in a

face to face environment. However, uniquely with iTRAIN you can take advantage of

computer based training (CBT) through Safebridge, the most respected online ECDIS
training provider. With iTRAIN CBT youll have remote access to a type approved
iECDIS to complete the course all you need is a computer and an internet
connection! Simply log-in in your own time, 24 hours a day and off you go.

You have three weeks to complete the course from the moment you log in. Follow the

online instructions through the Guide Me feature, take time to become familiar with the
iECDIS with Free Play and then when youre ready take the interactive test. Upon

passing youll be able to immediately print out your own approved certificate. Its as
easy and convenient as that.

Following the successful demonstration of competencies contained in the ECDIS Generic Training, Familiarisation is the process

relation to a specific ships ECDIS installation, prior to taking charge of a navigation watch.

Certification
After successful completion of the 5 day generic and familiarisation training youll be

provided with two certificates a blank generic one with no manufacturer logo for the
generic training, together with a familiarisation training certificate specific to Marteks
iECDIS.

access 24 hours a day for instant verification. No matter where you are, if faced with

inspection or vetting you can recall your certification in seconds avoiding any potential
hold up due to incorrect documentation. The PSC officer can even scan a QR code to

Its the responsibility of the Master to ensure his officers have received appropriate

training and have certificates on board to prove. Its a good idea to appoint an in-house
trainer for yearly refresher training saving you money on future external courses.
