Availability
Tool Steels O1 is stocked by 75 North American distributors and produced by 17 large mills.
Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with
delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required
This material is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 73 distributors but is also available to a lesser
extent in Flat Rolled Products, Tubular Products, and Wire Products.

Principal Design
Features

This alloy is one of the Cold Work, oil hardening type tool
steels. It is relatively inexpensive containing small amounts of
manganese, tungsten and chromium. Hardening by oil quench
minimizes distortion and cracking.

Applications

Applications include short run tooling for blanking dies, cold

forming dies and cutting tools operating at ambient
temperature.

Machinability

Machinability of this alloy is very good. It has a rating of 90%

that of the W group water hardening low alloy tool steels.

Forming

O1 alloy can be readily formed in the annealed condition by

conventional methods.

Welding

This alloy is weldable by standard means. Consult the alloy

supplier for details and procedures.

Heat Treatment

Slowly preheat to 1200 F and then gradually raise

temperature to 1450 - 1500 F and keep at temperature for 10
to 30 minutes. Quench in oil.

Forging

Forge at 1900 F down to 1575 F. Do not forge below 1550 F.

Cold Working

In the annealed condition this alloy may be readily cold

worked, much the same as for plain carbon steels.

Annealing

Anneal at 1450 F and slow furnace cool at less than 40 F per

hour.

Aging

Not applicable to this alloy.

Tempering

Temper at 350 to 500 F for Rockwell C hardness of 62 to 57.

Hardening

See "Heat Treatment" and "Tempering".

Other Comments

This tool steel is relatively inexpensive, yet has adequate

hardness and wear resistance for short run tooling use.
