I would like to thank my mother for bringing me into this world and raising me to the point of
self sustenance. I would like to thank my great uncle for being a role model to me and paying for
my final year of university. I would also like to thank my grandmother for always being there
whenever I needed advice from a wise person. My sister Rowena, has been a motivation to me to
work hard and I appreciate her. Special thanks go to Swansea University, particularly the Civil
and Computational Engineering Department for passing Civil Engineering skills to me, the Kenya
Institute of Management for providing Project Management skills training and making the classes
available at early morning hours before work. I am indebted to Mr. Mutuko as he has passed the
knowledge required to do research, collect data, analyse data,write reports and most importantly,
combine all these skills to solve everyday problems.

Abstract
According to the website businessdictionary.com, employee retention is defined as an effort
by a business to maintain a working environment which supports current staff in remaining in
the company.
This research paper will be based on investigation done by various experts in employee
retention. Among them are Robert Half and Cornell University researchers.

Problem statement.
Employers are losing some of their best employees as a result of many issues to be discussed.
It is now emerging that pay and good monetary benefits do not influence a high performing
employees decision to stay at a particular job. According to Robert Half, an online
magazine, employee retention should be at the forefront of every companys radar1 . This
research is based on finding out the reasons behind young organizations that are able to keep
their best employees.

CHAPTER TWO: DATA COLLECTION METHOD.


This study aims to explore the main factors affecting employee retention in start-up
organizations as these organizations are usually on a very tight budget. The data was
collected from 10 employees holding technical jobs in one organization in Kenya. The main
form of data collection was via interviews.

A. WELFARE
Employees who receive better health and welfare benefits have a higher tendency of
staying in a particular job. According to hrhero.com, an online employment law
resource library, employers who receive welfare are highly motivated to keep their
jobs and are able to ward off head hunters1. They display a high levels of loyalty.
