Basil/Herbs production system analysis

Description
It is interesting to note how Increasing disposable income and exposure to
international market are prompting more customers in metropolitan areas to go
for culinary herbs and seasonings. According to industry estimate, the market for
culinary herbs is growing at a fast pace of 20% to 25% a year. Thus, supported by
the fact that gourmet restaurant and discerning customers are increasing the
demand for culinary herbs, both dried and fresh, like basil, French tarragon,
rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, chives and parsley, and that these mildflavored herbs are bringing rich dividend to domestic manufacturers and farmers
(Sally, 2011), it seems that an excellent approach would be on implementing
their production within an urban environment closing as many cycles as possible.

Device Analysis
Elements
Target:
Component:
Supersystem element:

Object of the main function of the engineering system. Interaction with the
target reflects the main destination of the object.
An object that is a constituent part of an engineering system.
a component of the supersystem - an engineering system, personnel, or an
environment that interacts with the object to be analyzed.

Functions
Function:
Parameter:
Carrier of the function:
Object of the function:
Useful function:
Harmful function:
Main function:
Basic function:
Rank of function:

Action of a material object that changes the parameters of another material

object
Descriptions of properties in terms of measure or quantity.
An object that performs the function.
a material object that the action of the considered function is applied to.
a function that satisfies the requirements of the user of the function carrier.
a function that worsens parameters or performance of a function object.
The function for which an engineering system is devised
a useful function that acts on the target.
The relative importance of components performing useful functions for the
fulfillment of the main function of the engineering system.

Actions
Useful action:
Harmful action:

An action performing a useful function.

An action performing a harmful function.

Intensity of actions
Normal intensity:
Excessive intensity:
Insufficient intensity:

a situation when the actual intensity coincides with the required one.
a situation when the actual intensity exceeds the required one
a situation when the required intensity exceeds the actual one.

Parameters of actions (values and dependencies)

Useful
Actual value:
Required value:

the value of a parameter at a point in its life cycle.

a value that a parameter should have for optimal performance of its

value that the parameter has during the object life stage.
value that provides an acceptable level of damage for the object.
value that provides absence of damage to the object.

Trimming conditions:
Goals of trimming:
Ideal functional model:
Component Evaluation:

A method of improving engineering systems based upon the elimination of

components and the redistribution of their useful functions. The result of
this is a simpler, more cost-effective system, which performs as well (or
better) as the original.
The various options available for redistributing useful functions.
The problem to be solved to realize the chosen trimming conditions.
A function model that is developed upon completion of trimming.
A component evaluation is a method used to determine the order in which
trimming should take place based on function rank, problem rank, and cost
evaluation.
