III. Workshop Proceeding

There were 5 MFIs present during the Succession Management workshop facilitated by Ms. Marian
Katigbak, one of Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) senior management. The workshop started with the
introduction of participants and a brief introduction of the workshop then it was followed by a prayer
led by Ms. Patty Calilong of RBBF. Ms. Calilong also provided a short introduction about the partnership
between PinoyME and RBBF and introduced Ms. Marian Katigbak as the resource person of the
workshop. She also explained the objectives of the workshop then gave a warm welcome to the
participants.

Ms. Katigbak introduced succession planning to the participants by getting more information about the
size, scope and the experience of the participants towards succession management then she relates
these to the need for a succession planning management. She mentioned that Succession planning is
not just filling in a need but it also prepares the whole organization. She shared about the importance of
Succession Management as follows:
1. Ensures continuity of the service
2. Supplies qualified people prepared to take over
3. Provides career paths for top-performers
4. Develops an external reputation that says your organization is for the long term
5. Sends message to your employees that they are valued
The 5 mentioned importances will guide the participants in developing their organizations succession
plan and establish criteria for the selection of a candidate for succession. The workshop was divided into
4 modules. Module 1 is about the components of Succession Management, Module 2 is about the
Succession Management Process, Module 3 is about Succession Management Strategies and Module 4 is
about the Structures to Support Succession Management.
Some of the participants have already established a succession management program while the others
are still at the stage of realizing the need for a succession planning. One of the reasons as to why they
need succession planning is that people come and go, they also cannot please every employee to
become part of the organization forever and it is also difficult to look for a person who would be willing
to accept the job regardless of the salary. Further, the industry is having strong competitors and they
cannot avoid piracy of quality people.
