OUR M ISSION :
The mission of the Duluth Library Foundation is to enhance the
work of the Duluth Public Library by providing direct financial
support that benefits the community with literacy and lifelong
learning opportunities.

PR ESIDEN TS M ESSAGE 2015

It is always a pleasure to look back on a year filled with positive developments, and 2014 is no exception.
Last year, programming at the library jumped 15% compared to 2013. Attendance at child and teen events
swelled by 11%. Such robust growth mirrors a sense of optimism in Duluth itself. People like to live here,
and a thriving library is one reason.
Here is a sampling of the librarys 2014 events: Stories and finger plays for infants and toddlers; Storytime for
preschoolers; literacy programs (including computer literacy) for youths and adults; Kaleidoscope programs for
kids; Legos, magic, gift-making, art journaling; free movies. What do these events have in common? They
Dan DAlliard
energized the community, and Foundation support helped to make them happen. That is why your gifts
have made such a difference: With very few exceptions, the Foundation and the Friends of the Library provide the only steady
funding for library programming.
This is a responsibility and an opportunity that the Foundation gladly embraces. The Foundation annually gives up to 80% of its
endowment earnings to the library. In 2014, that equaled $17,716.38. It gave another $15,036.12 for materials and programs. All told,
with your generosity, the Foundation gave $32,752.50 to the library in 2014. In addition, this was another strong year for our
endowment, which grew in 2014 to $1,034,020 and has more than doubled since 2008.
In 2014, books and materials were added to the library. The teen space underwent a beautiful transition. The monthly meeting of the
Teen Anime & Manga Club continued to flourish. One Book, One Community attracted 1,185 participants. And you made this
possible. Your gifts to the Foundation ranged from a few dollars to several thousands of dollars. Representative in her generosity
if not her agewas 101-year-old Katharine Coventry, whose memoir graces the library shelves and whose total gifts of $10,000,
given across 17 years, puts her influence and generous spirit everywhere in the library.
We hope you will join us at our upcoming 4th-annual fundraiser, Learning & Libations at the Library, on September 19, 2015.
We have planned a festive and informative evening in the library. We hope to see you there!
Your generosity supports a wonderful library in our community. Thank you!

IN GOOD COM PA N Y
Surrounded by friends and family, 101-year-old Katharine (Kay) B. Coventry
stood at a podium in the library. She turned to look behind her at the names of
the people on the Andrew Carnegie section of the Duluth Library Foundation
donor wall, where a plaque bearing her name had just been added. She
looked back at the audience and remarked, What a lovely crowd Im with.
A lifelong bibliophile, Kay also wrote a memoir, titled Growing Seasons:
A 20th-Century Memoir. Mrs. Coventry has supported the Duluth Public
Library for many years, making use of its resources and regularly donating
funds to the Foundation to build up the librarys videography collection.
In spring 2014, with a gift to the Foundation, she reachedand surpassed
the threshold of $10,000 of cumulative giving.
To acknowledge this milestone, the Foundation held a reception in her
honor. Foundation President Dan DAllaird introduced Mrs. Coventry, and
City Council President Linda Krug thanked her for her generosity to the
citya generosity consistent with Mr. Carnegies own philanthropy.
Mr. Carnegie grew up in a tiny stone home in Dumferline, Scotland. In his
youth, he was forbidden to walk on the nearby grounds of the Pittencrieff
Estate because he was so poor. Years later, a financially successful
Mr. Carnegie returned to Dumferline, purchased the estate, and donated
it to the city to be made into a park. Dumferline is also where he built
the first of his public libraries. Some years ago, Mrs. Coventry herself
visited Carnegies childhood home and strolled through Pittencrieff Park.
At the podium, Mrs. Coventry quipped, I dont even if know if my library
card is up-to-date! Then, after receiving applause, she made her way
to the refreshment table, surrounded by well-wishers and admirers.

PERCH A NCE TO DR E A M
Good night sweet prince. With these words from Hamlet, Rebecca Killen Hawthorne ended
the eulogy for her father, attorney John Killen, in July 2013. It was a fitting farewell for a man
who relished the works of Shakespeare, referencing them often, and who loved the English
language that Shakespeare enriched by his writing. He was known to have quoted
Shakespeare in his closing arguments in court, recalled his widow, Elaine
Killen, with a smile. The highlight of a visit to London was the side trip
he and Elaine made to Stratford-on-Avon, to see a performance
of The Tempest; in his library, John had a collection of
books by and about the Bard.
So when Elaine considered how to honor the
memory of her late husband, one of the ideas
that suggested itself was to add his name
to the William Shakespeare section of the
Duluth Library Foundation donor wall at
the library. She timed her gift to arrive
on May 4, 2014on what would have
been his 87th birthday. Her gift
was added to the permanent
endowment, where it will
continue to benefit the
library into perpetuity.
He lived a life framed by
Shakespeare, said Elaine.
It is nice to see his
name by that of William
Shakespeare.

A BOL D R EDESIGN OF T H E T EEN SPACE

In 2014, teens started showing up at the library
in increasing numbers, and the youth librarians
were delighted to welcome them. But the
librarians soon realized they had a problem:
There was not enough furniture in the teen
space to accommodate the number of teens
who were coming to the library to read, do
homework, and hang out with friends.
Discussions with Library Manager Carla Powers,
Youth Services Coordinator Susan Schumacher,
and the Youth Services staff brought about an
idea: to re-design the teen space, bringing in
lime green and sky blue furniture, a vibrant new
carpet, and an edgy mural that would identify it
as a place specifically for teens. Once the idea was conceived and a budget developed,
the Foundation sought partners to make it happen. The Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation and
the Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation both
embraced the vision for creating an inviting space dedicated to teens. Partnering with the Duluth
Library Foundation, they made the idea of a new Teen Space a reality.
As the school year began, the new area was revealed to the publicto the delight of teenagers
at a press conference featuring Mayor Don Ness, Joan Gardner-Goodno, Executive Director of
the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, and Co-Chairs of the Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund Nick
Lansing and Jenn Ryan.
Harbor City International School senior Sara Walsh, who was at the unveiling, said, Ive been
coming here since, like, sixth grade, so Ive seen it go from worn-down couches with holes in them
to this. She added, Im so happy.
