The Library: Past, Present & Future

The Duluth Public Library was founded in 1890. Mayor John Sutphin
heeded the enthusiastic voices of the Ladies Library Association and
embraced the idea of a public library. A decade later, on July 4, 1901,
a cornerstone was laid for a brand new library building. The date was
not accidental: city leaders recognized that public access to
information was essential to maintaining our freedoms.
It is still true today. What has changed is that information comes in a
staggering array of formats: books, periodicals, microfilm, cassettes,
CDs, DVDs, the Internet. Even as information packaging has changed,
the library has done its best to keep up. The downtown library, built
in 1980, has free wi-fi and 21 public computers, which are constantly in use. Two branch libraries, West Duluth and Mt. Royal,
serve populations at either end of our long, narrow city, and each has public Internet access as well. The libraries span the
digital divide in Duluth, allowing patrons without computers to have access to the Internet, increasingly a staple of American
life. In addition to books, patrons can now check out e-book readers to take home. Soon, patrons will be able to check out
laptops for use within the main library.
And, of course, the libraries have books, book-club-in-a-bag kits, comfortable chairs, and games and toys for the youngest
patrons. They are places that build up the community. They are places of welcome, where everyone is equal. We believe that
libraries are an essential reason that Duluth is known for its quality of life.
Thank you for supporting the libraries through the Duluth Library Foundation.

Presidents Message
Dear Friends and Donors,
The year 2010 marked the 20th anniversary of our founding and was a solid year for the
Duluth Library Foundation despite challenging economic times. Contributions from generous
supporters like you totaled $38,590, which were added to our permanent endowment fund.
The earliest contributions, dating from 1990, have been steadily built up over the last two
decades and continue, through growth and dividends, to help sustain our Duluth Public
Library. Those gifts, as well as your gifts of today, will benefit our library into perpetuity.
The permanent endowments total assets increased to $794,077 by the end of December 2010.
This is an increase of nearly 15%. As in past years, the income generated by the endowment
went to help support library activities as well as to purchase books, computers, software, and
many other enhancements too numerous to list here. In 2010, the Foundation contributed $12,927 toward
library services and materials. We also continued to sponsor the successful One Book, One Community
Reading Project. (The phenomenal book selected for 2011which the Foundation also supportedwas
titled Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.)
All of this is possible because twenty years ago, a visionary group of donors who understood the significance
of providing for our library well into the future, created the Duluth Library Foundation. Today, it is people
like you who have continued and must continue this legacy. With cuts to local government aid impacting
City budgets like never before, it is the goal of the Duluth Library Foundation to dramatically increase its
permanent endowment so we can, on an ever increasing basis, sustain our Library.

We are blessed to have the wonderful library system.

Our youngest child, at age 6, said that if he moved,
he wanted to be right next to the library.
Patricia Berntsen, Library Patron

Mr. Johnson, who was homebound, was a voracious reader. When he

came across a review of a new book that appealed to him, he would call
the Duluth Public Library and ask that the book be held for him. He
treasured the library.
Mildred Johnson died in 2005, and her husband, Eugene, died shortly
after that. Mr. Johnson had asked his sister-in-law, Shelia Petrovich, to
make certain that when he died, a portion of his estate would be donated
to the Duluth Library Foundation to benefit the library. She carried out his
request. An Andrew Carnegie-level plaque on the Foundation Donor
Wall now bears the names Eugene and Mildred Johnson.
Every time I see their names on the plaque, I am glad that
their wishes were honored, says Shelia. Their generous gift,
which will help sustain the library into perpetuity, will also
continue to honor the memory of this couple, who viewed
the library as a gem.

Eugene and Mildred Johnson lived frugal lives. They worked hard. They
had a wringer washing machine and never owned a dryer. They were
careful in their spending, always putting away a little something for a
rainy day. Remarkably, this unassuming couple is among the Foundations
most generous donors.

planned gift, please contact Patra
