Asiswithotheranimals,thesurvivalofhumansalsoentirelydependedontheirobtainingfoodfromthe
environment.Beingintelligent,humanbeingsexploitenvironmentalresourcesformanypurposesotherthanjust
forprocuringfood.Inthelastfewcenturies,theexploitationofenvironmentalresourceshasdramatically
increased,leadingtoseriousdamageanddegradationoftheenvironment.Inthislessonyoushalllearnaboutthe
utilizationandexploitationofnaturalresourcesandhow,theyarebeingoverexploited.
INTHEENVIRONMENT
Primitivehumansinteractedwithenvironmentforsurvival.Ashumansbecamemoreand
morecultured,theydevisedmeansofusingenvironmentalresourcesformakinglife
comfortableandprotectingthemselvesfromvariousenvironmentalstresses(danger).

Abioticresourcesarethephysicalresourcesofnaturethataredescribedbelow.

Petroleumandnaturalgasarealsofossilfuels.Petroleumprobablyoriginatedfrom
marineanimalsthatlivedduringpastgeologicalperiods,justascoalwasformed
fromvegetation.Petroleumandnaturalgasareobtainedfromdeepinsidetheearth
andtheyarenonrenewableenergyresources.Petroleumproductsareusedfor
runningautomobiles,steamers,aeroplanesandformakingplasticsandfertilizers.

ENVIRONMENT
Humanbeingshavelivedonearthforapproximatelymorethan2millionyears.Recordsofprimitive
humansandtheiractivitiesareburiedintherocksalongwiththeirfossils.Thefossilrecordsshownot
onlydipictsthevariousstagesofhumanevolutionbutalsothelifestyleandbehaviourofprimitive
humans.
2.2.1Storyofhumanevolution
Whenhumanevolutionbegan,forestshaddwindledbecauseofglaciation.Muchofthelandsurfacewas
however,stillcoveredbyforest.Thecommonancestorsofapesandhumanshadtocomedownfrom
treeswheretheylived.Theywalkedonallfoursonthegroundusingallfourlimbs.Recentmolecular
studieshaverevealedthatfromcommonancestors,evolutionofapes(chimpanzee,gorilla,gibbonand
orangutan)andthatofhumansdivergedabout6millionyearsago.

huntanimalsforfood.PebbletoolshavebeenfoundinfossilsitesofaustralopithecinesinAfrica.
HomoerectusmadebettertoolswithstonesandthetraditionofmakingtoolspassedontoHomo
sapiensneandertalensisorNeandertalmanaswellastoHomosapienssapiensormodernman.
ToolsofHomoerectuswereflinttoolsandtherockstheyusedformakingtoolswerequartz,quartzite
andothervolcanicrocks.
ThestonehandaxesthatHomoerectusmadehadsharpedgeswhichwereachievedbyhammeringandchipping
awayflakeafterflakewithapieceofboneorhardwood.Theywerefarsuperiortopebbletools(of
AustralopithecinesandHomohabilis)andcouldeasilyuprootediblerootsandotherplantpartsfromtheground.
