Abstract

Mixing different amounts together of ethyl acetate, hydrochloric acid, water,

and ethyl alcohol while they react and reach equilibrium. Titrating each mixture with
a standardized sodium hydroxide solution to determine the equilibrium
concentration of acetic acid. The goal is to find the equilibrium constant that causes
the acid-catalyzed dissociation of ethyl.
Procedure
Part A:
1. Get unknown from stockroom and record molar masses.
2. Use 3 mL. or less and determine the density of the 3M HCl solution, unknown
ester, unknown alcohol, and distilled water.
3. Prepare reaction mixture by pouring the proper volume of HCl according to
Table 1 and use a pipette or burret to make the transfer.

4. Cap each bottle and mix by shaking and then store until they reach
equilibrium.
5. Using 500 mL of 0.7 M NaOH aqueous soltion dissolve it in 500 mL of distilled
water and seal in air tight bottle.
6. Obtain 3 grams of KHP and record mass to nearest milligram.
7. Dissolve the KHP with about 50 mL of distilled water.
8. Following same procedure prepare two more samples of KHP.
9. Add two drops of phenolphthalein indicator into each KHP solution and titrate
until a very light pink and this is the endpoint of the NaOH solution.
10.Repeat titration for other two KHP solutions.
11.Add two drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the five reaction bottles and
titrate each with the standardized NaOH solution.
