We would like to thank you for
participating in our 12th Annual
Denim & Dreams event here at
the Casa on Friday evening.
We all had a wonderful time and raised a
portion of the much-needed funds for our
ministries and Endowment funds here at the
Casa!
Special thanks to the friars, staff and
community members who dedicate their
time and service to making the Casa a
wonderful place.
Thank you all for your participation!
Recent Trends at the Casa.
• 2,921 registered members is a 30%
increase since 2008.
• Mass attendance is over 2,000 per week
over the winter (high) season.
• Church seats 310 comfortable, 350
uncomfortably.
• During high season 25% have no seat
inside the church.
• Sunday collections have grown by 14%
since 2007.
• Saturday night mass is averaging about
280 to 300 participants. This has not
substantially impacted Sunday
overcrowding.

• Give people more than they expect and do
it cheerfully.
• Memorize your favorite poem.
• Don't believe all you hear, spend all you
have or sleep all you want.
• Don't judge people by their relatives.

"Gifted and Called"

A Retreat for Gay and Lesbian Christians
April 30 - May 2
With Norbert Zwickl and Fr. Larry Dolan, OFM
This is our eleventh annual retreat for gays and lesbians who claim Christianity as their
religion of choice. We invite you to participate along with other members of the faith
community … or, if you are looking for a faith community, come and join us. This is an opportunity to
take time for yourself and God … make new friends … and feel the warm generous welcome from
the Franciscans and the "Casa community." This retreat is inspired by the pastoral recommendations
of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' document titled "Always Our Children."
"You are also a child of God, gifted and called for a purpose in God's design."
Along with our gifted retreat leaders everyone who comes can share faith experiences, examine his
and her spiritual and creative gifts and even discover gifts they hadn't recognized before this
weekend. Our retreat leaders will be an inspiration for this experience. Please bring a friend!
Fee per person: $215 single; $165 double, includes lodging, meals and materials
Commuter: $130 includes meals and materials. Check-in Friday, 5pm, dinner 6pm
Retreat concludes with lunch on Sunday.

Mother's Day … coming up on May 9th

Mother's Day is in a few weeks and we will remember and pray for our mothers who
have given us life and love, for those who are with us as well as those who have left our
sight and passed on. And we give thanks for a loving mother who generously provides
for her children, so does God watch over us.
To help us recognize and honor our Mothers that weekend, all are invited to bring photographs to
mass. Photos of mothers and grandmothers, godmothers, stepmothers, living or deceased, will be
displayed on tables in the Church.

A message from the Director.
The path of Discipleship leads us to the
difficult questions of our time. I believe
that there is no more difficult issue,
today, than immigration. Many in
religious communities are hesitant to
broach the subject at church because of its divisive
nature. However, discipleship also calls us to
courage, so I am going to share some of my
reflections on this issue. The first is that most of the
people I talk with (on both sides of the issue and on
both sides of the political aisle) agree that the system
is very complicated, broken and needs to be
fixed. However, even with all these people believing
that the present policies are defective, so many are
willing to do nothing comprehensive about it. It
puzzles me that there is no sense of urgency to
establish a plan that will solve the many problems
caused by this broken system. When we were in
Washington DC last month, we talked with the staffs
of our elected representatives and they basically told
us that there was no political energy to work on this.
To be honest, this made me mad. You and I don’t
get to pick and choose the work we want to do. As
constituents, I believe that we need to tell our
representatives that we want them to craft a
comprehensive, bipartisan, immigration plan because
living with a broken system, that is harming individuals,
businesses, and communities, is not acceptable! (See
- you can tell that I am frustrated) Senators Charles
Schumer (D) from New York and Lindsey Graham (R)
from South Carolina have been working on a bill.
They need more co-sponsors.
A second reflection is that in the vacuum created
with no national legislation, cities, counties and states
enact their own laws. These laws are often in direct
contradiction of each other and will end up costing
the state a lot of money in litigation. Besides that,
they tend to be very narrowly focused and do not
address a multitude of factors in the situation. The
state of Arizona is in the forefront of these actions.
Recently the state passed immigration laws that were
opposed by the leaders of most faith communities,
the social service sector, educators, and many in the
business community. These laws would require law
enforcement to arrest anyone they have “reasonable
suspicion” of being here illegally. This will divert police
officers from keeping the community safe, while
leaving them open to racial profiling. It will also keep
citizens from reporting crimes. The Catholic Bishops
of the state of Arizona wrote a letter opposing these
provisions. My fear is that these bills will do way more
harm than good. The last recourse will be the
Governor who has the opportunity to veto this
legislation.

Job Seekers Training For New Careers
6:30 pm on Thursday, May 6th in the
Br. Anthony room at the Casa
The Casa Valley Interfaith Project (VIP) Core Team invites
you to this session to learn about supporting a new effort
to assist job seekers who need to train for new, well-paying
careers. VIP is organizing the Central AZ Training Initiative,
a labor market intermediary made up of faith-based
institutions, employers, local governments, training
providers and social service agencies to create new
pathways for workers in job training.
As AZ recovers from the recession, we will need a highly
skilled workforce to sustain and fuel the recovery. The
Casa Community can support this program by identifying
adult workers looking for new careers, by mentoring
training participants and as liaisons with employers. For

Mark Alexander is named after his father’s grandfather.
Jack Robert – Jack appealed to the parents because it is a classic name. Robert comes from dad’s

Ava Milani - Ava was a short and pretty name, Milani because her mother’s grandmother came from Milan.
Nicci Altagracia – Nicci is named after her Dad Nic because she looks like him! Our Lady of La Altagracia is
the patron saint and protector of the Dominican Republic. Altagracia means “high grace”.
Sophia Teresa is named after one of TV’s Golden Girls! Teresa is her mom’s aunts middle name!
Ava Shea – Ava was chosen because it is a beautiful name and she was a beautiful baby when born. Shea is
an Irish name, plus the street that Mom lived on when she moved here!

The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me!

The students preparing for Confirmation have been learning about
the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. They did this by using some everyday symbols to remember and understand these
gifts. Here is what they worked with:
Knowledge is symbolized by Smarties! This is the gift that makes us smart about our faith and ourselves!
Understanding is symbolized by Pretzels. Helps us to untie the knots in our lives!
Wisdom is an “AHA” card. It helps us to say “AHA”, I finally understand!
Courage is related to gum. It gives us the sticking power to stand up for what we believe.
Reverence is signified by a flower petal. We see God in everything around us.
Wonder and Awe explode like a Starburst candy when we let the Holy Spirit into our lives.
Right Judgment is remembered by a sucker. This gift helps us make good choices and keeps us from
feeling like suckers.
These gifts will be confirmed in each of our students through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation.
Please continue to pray for them and their families as they journey towards this life-changing sacrament. You
are also invited to drop off a note of congratulations, affirmation or just to say that you are praying for them,
at the front desk!
