Steps of mix design

First determine target mean strength TMS= fck+ 1.86 standard

deviation( Standard deviation given in the mix design code IS 10262:2009
Find water cement ratio from chart correspond to TMS

w.c ratio
0.3 -0.31
0.32-0.34
0.35-0.37
0.39-0.42

Check w/c ratio shall not be more than limiting water cement ratio given in IS
456
For M-35 it is 0.45
Find water content based on workability requirement
Maximum limit is 186 litre
For RCC box slump requirement is around 50-75 mm and for that 160-165 lit re
is sufficient
Calculate cement content = water requirement/w c ratio

Check min cement content 310 kg

Check maximum cement content 500kg

Find sand as total volume of aggregate as per IS:10262-2009.

Normally it is 35 % .
Calculate c mix proportions as per formula for 1 cum
a) Volume of cement = mass of cement/1000X3.15
3.15 is specific
gravity of cement
b) Volume of water= mass of water 160 litre means 0.160 cum
c) Volume of aggregates = 1-(volume of cement + volume of water)
d) Volume o f coarse aggregate= 0.65* volume of total aggregate
e) Volume of sand=0.35 * volume of total aggragate
20 mm & 10mm shall normally be in 60 % & 40 %.
Weight o f sand = volume of sand X specific gravity X 1000
Weight of 20 mm agragate= 0.60 X volume of course aggragate X 1000

Weight of 10 mm agragate= 0.40 X volume of course aggregatex1000

Covert the proportions for per 10 kg of cement
Mix all aggragates as per 10 kg of cement
Carry out sieve analysis
Check its grading as per IS: 383 all in aggragates. If it is passing the
criterian then its ok otherwise change ratio of 20 m & 10 mm to get the
grading
Now made 5 batches with 10 kg cement with different water cement
ration like 0.38,0.39,0.40,0.41 & 0.42
Records slump of each mix
Cast 3 cubes from each mix
Test after 3 days
If strength achieved is 60 % of TMS then mix design is ok.

Grade of Concrete : M35

Characteristic Strength (Fck) : 35 Mpa
Standard Deviation : 1.91 Mpa*
Target Mean Strength : T.M.S.= Fck +1.65 x S.D.
(from I.S 456-2000) = 35+ 1.651.91
= 38.15 Mpa
Test Data For Material:

Fine Aggregate : 1.0 %
MIX DESIGN
Take Sand content as percentage of total aggregates = 36%
Select Water Cement Ratio = 0.43 for concrete grade M35
(From Fig 2. of I.S. 10262- 1982)
Select Water Content = 172 Kg
(From IS: 10262 for 20 mm nominal size of aggregates Maximum Water
Content = 186 Kg/ M3 )
Hence, Cement Content= 172 / 0.43 = 400 Kg / M3
Formula for Mix Proportion of Fine and Coarse Aggregate:
1000(1-a0) = {(Cement Content / Sp. Gr. Of Cement) + Water Content +(Fa /
Sp. Gr.* Pf )}
1000(1-a0) = {(Cement Content / Sp. Gr. Of Cement) + Water Content +Ca /
Sp. Gr.* Pc )}
Where Ca = Coarse Aggregate Content
Fa = Fine Aggregate Content
Pf = Sand Content as percentage of total Aggregates
= 0.36

Pc = Coarse Aggregate Content as percentage of total Aggregates.

= 0.64
a0 = Percentage air content in concrete (As per IS :10262 for 20 mm nominal
size of
aggregates air content is 2 %) = 0.02
Hence, 1000(1-0.02) = {(400 /3.15) + 172 +(Fa / 2.62 x 0.36)}
Fa = 642 Kg/ Cum
As the sand is of Zone II no adjustment is required for sand.
Sand Content = 642 Kg/ Cum
1000(1-0.02) = {(400 /3.15) + 172 +(Ca / 2.67 x 0.64)}
Hence, Ca = 1165 Kg/ Cum
From combined gradation of Coarse aggregates it has been found out that
the proportion of 53:47 of 20 mm & 10 mm aggregates produces the best
gradation as per IS: 383.
Hence, 20 mm Aggregates = 619 Kg
And 10 mm Aggregates = 546 Kg
To obtain slump in the range of 150-190 mm water reducing admixture brand
SP430 from Fosroc with a dose of 0.3 % by weight of Cement shall be used.
Hence the Mix Proportion becomes:
