t shouldnt be a surprise that Millvilles Levoy

Theatre is just about sold out for the evening of
Saturday, April 2, when the Puerto Rican Action
Committee of Southern New Jersey (PRAC) presents the first Legends of Salsa Concert.
The concert features an all-star ensemble of internationally beloved salsa performers, some with southern
New Jersey and Philadelphia connections, says Ralph
Padilla, CEO of PRAC of Southern N.J. The event, also
celebrating 25 years of worldwide entertainment by the
legendary musician Edgar Joel, is one of the cultural
initiatives the 45-year-old non-profit group organizes in
order to bring high-profile entertainment to the southern
New Jersey regions large Hispanic population.
There is a need to provide world-class Hispanic cultural events in an area of New Jersey, which we have
identified as Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem and portions
of Atlantic counties, says Padilla.
This event will be the first of many more Hispanic
cultural events that we will be producing in the near
future in Cumberland County. We at PRAC are excited to
be taking the lead with expanding opportunities for the
entire community to enjoy our culture, he continues.
Adriel Gonzalez, originally from the Bronx, N.Y., met
Joel in the late 1990s and has performed in his bands ever
sincewhen his own busy schedule as a musician allows.
Gonzalez, taking the lead from Joelwho branched out
from his humble North Philadelphia roots to become an
international salsa star in the early 1990shas made a
career of performing throughout the world, including
several appearances in South America and Europe, as

emolition began last week on the

vacant Travel Inn on the southeast corner of East and Landis avenues. All
four corners of the blighted intersection were
bundled for redevelopment in 2007. At the
time, then-mayor Perry Barses administration
identified the redevelopment of the Eastern
Gateway intersection as a key to redeveloping
the citys downtown as a whole. Only one corner
(the site of the Landis Theater and Moris
restaurant) has been redeveloped to date.
That was the northwest corner, where the
theater and restaurant were restored and
opened in May of 2010. The theater is now
open for occasional shows (the next is a Genesis
tribute band on April 2). Moris is closed with
the possibility of reopening under the stewardship of a new operator after the city issued
requests for proposals for the restaurant in May
of 2015. Vinelands Economic Development

CORNER 2
(Continued from cover)
Director, Sandy Forosisky, has stated publicly that there has been more than one
interested party who might step up to run
the restaurant this year.
With Sacred Heart High School closing
in mid-2013, the northeast corner was taken
out of the equation. Depending upon what
the Camden Diocese decides to do with the
property, it may yet be redeveloped.
The southwest corner, the site of the
East Landis Hotel, was eliminated from
the plan almost from the start. When former Mayor Bob Romano took office in

2008, his administration showed no

appetite for including the East Landis
Hotel in the muddy waters of eminent
domain proceedings. Current Mayor Ruben
Bermudez never attempted to change the
citys course with regards to the southwest
corner, either. But Hans Lampart, whose
Eastern Pacific Development company was
signed to redevelop the four corners in
2007, remains hopeful that may change
after a new mayor is chosen in November.
My hope is that the next administration
will look at that and, even if its a parking
lot, I think it would be an improvement.
Regarding the southeast corner, the
symbolic demolition of the Travel Inn is
the first step in clearing the land needed to

develop the three-story senior housing

project that will contain 78 affordable units
for seniors and the disabled, plus about
8,000 square feet of retail space along the
south side of Landis and east side of East,
according to Lampart. He says the total
cost for the development of the project,
including property acquisition, demolition
and construction, is about $18 million.
Lampart and city officials are still finalizing the acquisition of the remaining
properties bounded by Landis Avenue to
the north, and by Myrtle Street and East
Avenue. Lampart says he will close on
those (including the Crown Chicken and
Adamo Feed buildings) when the project
starts in August. In the meantime, the city

is relocating tenants of the properties over

the next 90 days. Lampart has the financing in place, with construction loans from
Haddon Savings Bank and Century
Savings Bank and investment commitment
from New York-based First Sterling.
The rest of the demolition should commence in August with construction set to
begin immediately afterwards, according to
Lampart. He projects a Summer 2017 opening for the Landis Square Senior Apartments,
designed by architect John Pedersen.
Im very excited, said the ever-patient
developer. This gives new meaning to the
saying, slow and steady wins the race. Ive
hung in there through five applications
with the state and now Im ready to roll. I

CCIA Announces Tire

Amnesty Program
The Cumberland County Improvement
Authority (CCIA) was recently awarded a
grant from the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection to address illegally disposed and abandoned tires. As a
result, the Authority will host a monthlong Tire Amnesty Program for
Cumberland Countys non-commercial
residents this May.
When we heard about availability of
the DEPs Recycling Bonus Grant Funds to
target abandoned tires, we immediately
seized this opportunity to benefit our
County, Anthony J. Riviera III, CCIA
Director of Recycling and Enforcement
explained. After learning we received the
grant, we were anxious to organize and
promote our first Tire Amnesty Program.

Miracle Mike
Today is a day of humble jubilation for my family! Today is
Remission Day for our grandson,
who a little over five years ago, was
facing a dismal diagnosis of SAA
(severe aplastic anemia). The journey has been a long, exhausting,
and emotional trek that pulled at
the heartstrings of so many.
However, thanks to the generous
and unwavering courage of someone
who took the time to be a bonemarrow donor, our prayers were
answered.
As a grandmother, I watched not
only the ferocious struggle of my
only grandson, but that of our
daughter, who had to learn to stand
strong, hide her tears and fears,
manage to keep a job, and not lose
her mind! The Miracle in Miracle
Mike evolves from the odds that
were not in his favor. With a prognosis of less than a 30-percent
chance of his bone-marrow transplant being successful, and over
three years of depending on a feeding tube, he now can enjoy being
free of all medical intervention. He
is one year medication-free, the
feeding tube is gone, and he is a
successful high-school student who
has ambitions of pursing a career
in the medical field.
Donors save lives! The power of
prayer is never to be questioned,
and there is always HOPE.
A special thank you to all family,
friends, and community who
showed such an overwhelming
response to our needs over these
past years. The prayers, the
fundraisers, the general support are
gifts that we have been blessed
with and humbled by.
Life is a gift, and a gift not to be
taken for granted. God Bless you all.
Mary Barner, Vineland

According to Riviera, here in

Cumberland County, the last two countywide CCIA-sponsored litter cleanup
events resulted in the collection of nearly
20 tons of illegally dumped tires in parks,
waterways and roadsides. Besides being
unsightly in our public areas, he says,
illegally-dumped tires collect water and
become breeding grounds for disease carrying mosquitos, and also contaminate
the soil.
The CCIAs Amnesty program is set to
begin on May 2, and will be conducted at
the Solid Waste Complex on Jesse Bridge
Road in Deerfield during normal working
hours through the month. The program is
being offered only to non-commercial residents of Cumberland County for the collection of passenger-vehicle size or smaller tires. Identification will be required.

Salon Fabrojae Plans Earth

Day Fundraiser

Details about the event will be posted on

the Improvement Authoritys website at
ccia-net.com.
Riviera explained, We invite all
County residents to participate in this collection effort to dispose of unsightly and
unwanted tires, whether they are in their
back yards or in public places.
A maximum of 15 tires per household
or per vehicle will be permitted. The program is limited to 75 tons, therefore the
county-wide program will end when that
total collection weight is reached regardless of the date. For more information:

The Ellison School hosted Hua Hua

Zhang, a master in the art of Ancient
Chinese Shadow Puppetry. Hua Hua
worked with Ellison students throughout the week in small class size sessions teaching Chinese culture, while
also providing them with the skills to
create their own puppets. As a culminating activity, each child was involved
in a full school assembly where they showcased their newly acquired talents in storytelling using this ancient art form.
Only two other schools in the state have been awarded the Target Young

n its first incarnation as what has

been dubbed Old Hammonton,
the town developed from the business enterprises of William Coffin
and his sons who operated a sawmill and a
glass factory. But Hammontons development would only last six years after
Coffins death in 1844, most likely due to
the lack of self-sufficiency and the inability to expand and generate new businesses.
The 1889 text Illustrated History of the
Town of Hammonton with an Account of
its Soil, Climate and Industries, declares
that Old Hammonton existed as a business and social oasis in the wilderness.
But it relied on other towns to provide
necessary services. Through the efforts of
Coffin, it had constructed a schoolhouse,
which also served as a church, but it needed to recruit a preacher from another
municipality whose schedule only allowed
him to conduct services every two weeks.
In the case of medical issues, a physician
from Haddonfield was summoned.
Because the Camden and Atlantic
Railroad had not yet been built, travel
remained limited. According to Illustrated
History of the Town of Hammonton, communication with the outside world was by
stage, which ran from Camden to Leeds'
Point every Wednesday and Saturday, and
made the return trips Thursdays and
Mondays. This was the fast mail route of
the primitive days. Richard Cake was the
first stage driver, and after him came
William Satt. He was succeeded by
Captain Kimble who pulled the ribbons
over the stage coach team, until the building of the railroad caused the stage and
the stage driver to move on to a wilder
country. It is reported that when Kimble
was unable to make the run, his wife
would travel the route for him.
The arrival of the railroad, however,
would usher in a New Hammonton,
which would be founded on an agricultural rather than industrial plan and give settlers more autonomy. In Old
Hammonton, factory and mill workers
subsisted on products from Coffins company store, an arrangement that returned
a portion of an employees pay to the company. Illustrated History of the Town of
Hammonton offers a glimpse into an entry
in Coffins day book that recorded a standard purchase by one of his employees: 1

quarter of flour; 5 pounds of pork, 1 pound

of sugar; 1 plug of tobacco; 1 quart of
molasses; 1 quart of rum; and it is averred
that this individual entry was duplicated
by nearly every head of a family who
worked in the factory.
In 1840, Coffins glass factory burned
down and arson was suspected. The
owner wasted no time in rebuilding his
facility but, suspicious that his workers
had inflicted the damage on the original
building, dismissed them outright. To
replace them, he recruited workers from
Massachusetts.
Soon after, Coffin established the first
post office in Hammonton and was
appointed postmaster, enjoying several
years in that position.
But with Coffins death, Old
Hammonton would begin its decline,
reaching its end in six years. As William
McMahon, in his book South Jersey
Towns, puts it, by 1850, the wheels of the
old mill had ceased to turn and the glassworks had fallen into decay. With both
businesses gone, there was no security for
the town and this business and social
oasis in the wilderness was left staring at
its own demise.
Illustrated History of the Town of
Hammonton recognizes the significance of
the towns later history but takes a
moment to eulogize Hammontons first
incarnation: while we may flatter ourselves that a decade of our time is worth a
cycle of that of the older time, still an honorable fortune was made in those days,
and happiness and good fellowship
abounded at the lake in those antebellum
times.
Several factors, however, hinted at a
rebirth for Hammonton in the 1850s. In
the early years of that decade, towns like
Egg Harbor City and Elwood would spring
up a relatively short distance away from
Hammonton. The Camden and Atlantic
Railroad would organize, lay its tracks and
begin a successful run that connected the
western and eastern edges of southern
New Jersey, facilitating travel to and from
Philadelphia, where two promising businessmen were about to meet and form a
partnership that would irrevocably
change the future of Hammonton. I

ast week, I highlighted four

upcoming events for which
were rolling out the red carpet
our Fourth Friday Easter
Extravaganza on March 25, our broker
tour on April 6, our Downtown Merchants
Meet-and-Greet on April 7, and the Main
Street New Jersey Downtown Institute
that we are hosting on April 27. This week
I want to keep the red carpet rolled out
for two additional important events.
Were rolling out the red carpet for our
Main Street Vineland volunteers for a special Volunteer Appreciation Event on
Wednesday, April 13. It will take place
starting at 5:30 p.m., at Tropical Latin
Restaurant, 523 E. Landis Avenue.
Volunteer Appreciation Month is celebrated nationally in April and we want to
show all our volunteers that we appreciate
what they do for us.
We recognized certain volunteers last
October at A Taste of Vineland and will do
so again this year. The event on April 13,
however, is a time to celebrate all our volunteers. There will be some hors doeuvres and desserts on hand, as well as a
complimentary cocktail for each volunteer
attending. A cash bar will also be available. To register, send an e-mail to
mainstreet@mainstreetvineland.org.
We also want to roll out the carpet to
businesses that want to learn or fine-tune
their business and marketing skills at a
series of five free seminars that are being
held on consecutive Tuesdays in May
May 3, May 10, May 17, May 24, and May
31. They will take place at La Cabana Del
Tio Tom Deli Express, 636 E. Landis

name a few cultural events that we have

already booked into our calendar, says
Padilla.
As of print time, Padilla says more than
600 seats have been sold or are committed
for the April 2 event in Millville. This
event, adds Padilla, will allow the local
community to enjoy a world-class
Hispanic culture event right in their
backyard.
With one out of every five people in
New Jersey of Hispanic descent, the
Cumberland County area is one of the
most densely Hispanic-populated regions
in the state, says Padilla.
Many are looking forward to this rare
opportunity to catch big-name salsa stars
and gather together for a night of cultural
entertainment and camaraderie.
Its going to be good night of music, at
a very nice venue, says Gonzalez. And its
really never been done in Millville before.
There are a lot of Latinos in this area and
Philly, and its going to be a nice night. Im
going to see a lot of folks I know.
This area, adds Gonzalez, needs a lot
more events like thistop-quality artists
presented in a nice setting.
So, will there be dancing at the Levoy
for this event?
Well, its a theater with a stage, so I
dont know, says Gonzalez. But people
will definitely be dancing in their seats. I

well as throughout the United States.

In addition to Joel, Gonzalez will be
performing with Latin Grammy nominee
Michael Stuart, Nino Segarra (from Puerto
Rico), and Frankie Ruiz Jr., the son of the
legendary Salsero who will be making his
first southern New Jersey performance.
The night belongs to the celebration of
25 years of worldwide entertainment by
the legendary Edgar Joel, adds Padilla.
With the exception of Ruiz Jr.,
Gonzalez has performed with all of the
musicians on the bill. Having worked with
Joel for several decades makes the event
even sweeter for Gonzalez, who is excited
to be a part of this special concert.
Hes been at it for 25 years, says
Gonzalez. That alone is a major achievement in this business, but [Edgars also]
well-known internationally with a variety
of major hits worldwide. Hes had a very
impressive career.
Padilla, who says the mission of the
PRAC of Southern N.J. is improving the
quality of life of the community through
collaboration and focusing on health, services, housing, cultural and arts along with
Hispanic empowerment initiatives, adds
that honoring Joel at the concert seemed
like a good idea.
Padilla refers to Joel as a South
Jersey/Philadelphia local guy who has
never forgotten his roots. He says that
honoring him with PRAC of Southern
N.J.s kickoff Cultural and Arts Event was
a perfect fit.
While the PRAC organization formed in
1971 to assist the Puerto Rican migrant
population in Salem County, NJ, over the
next 45 years the mission of the organization expanded from just serving the
Hispanic population, according to Padilla.
The agency provides programs such as
N.J. DYFS Multi-Service Programs, energy
assistance programs, housing programs,
lead hazard reduction programs, [the]
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure program, translation services, transportation
programs, a food pantry program, economic development initiatives, Hispanic
empowerment programs and cultural, arts
and entertainment initiatives.
While the PRACs annual gala will celebrate the non-profits 45th anniversary later
this yearat the Centerton Country Club on
October 15PRAC organizers are also planning a slate of other events for 2016.
We will be hosting an International
Baseball Ambassador Tour with a Puerto
Rican National team, says Padilla. They
will be competing with local and national
teams in August.
Other events include a PRAC Gala in
November in Pittsgrove Township, a
Hispanic Leaders Networking Event also
in November and a Salsa with the Stars
Dance Competition in Decemberjust to
