Student Internship Supports

Rural Community Development
Funding is available to help organizations work with

post secondary students to undertake community-based
research in the West Kootenay and Boundary regions. The
annual TeckServ Internship, now in its sixth year, provides
support for a Selkirk College student to engage in local community service through an applied research project designed
to offer ongoing benefit to the community.
Students and communitybased organizations are invited
to submit proposals that address
a need for applied research to
support initiatives intended to
create positive rural development
outcomes at the local or regional
scale. Submissions from organizations do not need to have a student identified, but submissions
from students must be linked to
a sponsoring community organization. Proposals must be submitted by Thursday, March 24
and the successful applicant will
be notified by early April.
The program is funded by Teck
Trail Operations and offers up
to $10,000 in financial assistance
to cover student wages, supplies
and travel costs. Additional support is provided by the Columbia
Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI), at Selkirk College,
in the form of research advisory
services, office space and student
supervision (if necessary), dissemination of research results and
help in matching organizational
needs with student researchers.
This funding helps students gain
valuable workplace experience
and put their education to use
for the benefit of their community. The program is part of Teck
Trail Operations ongoing commitment to Selkirk College, its

Global Refugee Crisis

Comes To Nelson
The global refugee crisis has dominated the news for

many many months, we here in our little piece of paradise could just bury our heads and pretend that it doesnt
involve us, but we are all on this planet together and what
happens to one of us, happens to all of us.
Because of this, there are three different initiates in the
Nelson Area to help resettle three families who have lived
through awful situations and need our help and support.
The Kootenay Refugee Coalition has been active in
this area for quite some time and have brought numerous families to this area, right now they have two women
from Africa and are working on bringing their children
here those children are now in a camp in very unsettled
conditions.
The two newly formed groups, the Cathedral Refugee
Committee and the Nelson Friends of Refugees are both
working hard to lay the needed groundwork to bring two
more families into the area. Both groups have secured
housing and are actively working to furnish and outfit
those houses with donations from individuals and local
businesses. They are also preparing language translation
and ESL as well as healthcare and schooling.
All three groups have Facebook pages and you can
access their websites through the pages and see the different ways in which you can help.
Please join these three groups at an event organized
by the West Kootenay Global Awareness Network on
Tuesday, March 29 at 7 pm at the Front Room, 901 Front
Street, Nelson. We will be presenting the film Salam
Neighbor, about Zaatari, where displaced Syrians find
themselves waiting for resettlement or to go home. Cost
is by donation.
In addition to showing this important film, we will also
have the opportunity to hear from community members and networks active in refugee work here in Nelson
including: Nelson Friends Of Refugees, Kootenay Refugee
Coalition and Cathedral Refugee Committee.

Youth Film Programs Presents.....
The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture and Rossland Youth Action Network will be holding a Claymation
Workshop with Shelley Painter on Saturday, April 9, 1 pm
5pm at the Youth Action Network (YAN) space.
Shelley will teach Claymation skills, from storyline, set
up and building your characters to how to turn stills into
a motion picture. Lego and action figures can also be used
in the films.
Workshop cost is $20 with a maximum of 12 participants and requires preregistration. To register, email rosslandarts@gmail.com

the RAFT program focuses on
helping job seekers build exceptional job search, customer service and administrative skills.
Participants of RAFT graduate
from the program with relevant
computer training as well as certificates in Foodsafe, First Aid,
WHMIS, Serving it Right and
World Host.
The program features a targeted job search component in
which participants develop essential skills for writing dynamic
resumes,
networking
with
employers and interviewing with
confidence. By combining skillsbased training with workshops on
the latest work search techniques,
the RAFT program helps participants build a solid foundation to
pursue work in service related
occupations, said Britton. After
completing the program, participants become eligible for a four
week wage subsidy.
The RAFT program is scheduled to begin on April 4. For

Women Grow is an entity that was created to connect,

educate, inspire and empower the next generation of cannabis industry leaders by creating programs, community
and events for aspiring and current business executives.
Founded in 2014 in Denver, Colorado, Women Grow is
a for-profit entity that serves as a catalyst for women to
influence and succeed in the cannabis industry as the
end of marijuana prohibition occurs on a national scale.
Chapter events are held every month in different cities
throughout the region with the intent of encouraging and
promoting small business artisans and strengthening the
local economy throughout the region.
Women Grow Kootenay Region Chapter is coming to
Nelson to host a Spring Grow Show at the Hume Hotel on
Friday, April 8, at 6 pm, which will feature both presentations and information booths with enthusiasts and business owners with a vast knowledge and experience related
to this sector of the industry. Women Grow is thrilled to
have local business owner and garden aficionado, David
Robinson, as the headlining speaker for the evening.
David was born and raised in Surrey, BC and grew up
enjoying the fruits of the local harvest. In his early twenties he began working full time in hydroponic retail. This
was like hydroponic boot camp! David began to take a
personal interest in helping his clients grow with whatever means they could and dedicated the next 10 years
towards producing a book, The Growers Handbook, that
considered all potential variables into indoor cultivation.
