DIRECTOR'S NOTE
It is a matter of great pride, privilege and pleasure to present to you the Graduating Batch
of 2017.
NLIU, as one of the premier law schools in the country, is equipped with state of the art
infrastructure, distinctive pedagogy, and a diverse confluence of students. The academic
atmosphere at the University is committed towards imparting quality and holistic legal
education to invoke curiosity and encourage initiative. The precise blend of classroom
teaching and rigorous evaluation enables the students to strengthen their conceptual and
analytical foundations of law. They have developed the ability to ask the right questions to
seek the right answers.
Over the years, this Batch has displayed tremendous zeal to develop a strong legal acumen
and satisfy their intellectual curiosity. I have witnessed the students explore their

ABOUT NLIU
The National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU) was established under Act No. 41 of the Madhya Pradesh
Legislature in 1997 and pioneered its first academic programme in 1998. A member of the Association of Indian
Universities and patronized by the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, it works in close association with the High Court of
Madhya Pradesh and National Judicial Academy, Bhopal.
The University proffers superlative infrastructure infused with a commendably comprehensive academic culture that
stands second to none. It proudly nurtures the best of brains, spanning all over the nation, honing their skills to create better
individuals. NLIU has been successful in fructifying its efforts to catalyze an all-round development of its students, ranging
from academic excellence to extra-curricular activities; from top-notch research abilities to encouraging participation of
students for community emancipation. The University has fostered lucrative partnership with many eminent institutions
like University of Lucerne in Switzerland, Georgia State University and University of Washington in Seattle, USA, McGill
University, Canada and Leiden University in Netherlands, augmenting multi-faceted growth of students.
A gratifying testimony to the success of NLIU is its exemplary faculty and accomplished alumni. Students have also made
their alma mater proud at premier institutions like Harvard Law School, Oxford University, University of Manchester,
National University of Singapore, and University of Warwick. NLIU, thus, strives in aeternum, to strengthen students with
valuable attributes of competence, confidence, righteousness, equipping them to become promising professionals in
future.

CAMPUS & INFRASTRUCTURE

The sprawling 40 acre campus of the University is located in the harmonious haven of lakes with its state of the art
infrastructure. This includes two aesthetically designed academic blocks with air conditioned classrooms and modern audiovisual aids of teaching; residential facilities for staff and separate hostels for boys and girls; a recently constructed General
Store and Health Care Centre; as well as a fully furnished Guest House for lodging. Some of the hallmark structures that set
NLIU apart from other institutions include the following:
Gyan Mandir
Standing true to its name, it is one of the best libraries across law colleges in India. It houses a state-of-the-art computer centre
replete with the latest genre of computers and internet facilities. The Gyan Mandir is also equipped with conference rooms,
faculty chambers and video conferencing facilities. The library provides a rich collection of books, journals and law reports as
well as a large collection of e-resources like Lexis Nexis, Hein Online, JSTOR, SCC Online, Manupatra, WestLaw etc.
Rajiv Gandhi Cyber Law Centre
A Centre of Excellence in Cyber Law is a unique establishment of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development,
Government of India that deals with new and critical issues relating to cyberspace. The Centre houses a Conference hall,
along with several air conditioned classrooms with audio-visual facility and a library tailor-made for research in this field.
Auditorium
The 300-seater auditorium with state of the art audio-visual technology serves as an able venue for various seminars,
workshops, cultural programmes, moot competitions and the annual convocation of the University.
Sports Complex
Unlike most law schools, NLIU boasts of a fully equipped sports complex with a gymnasium and as well as provisions for
Pool, Billiards, Snooker, Table Tennis, and Badminton, amongst other sports. Adjacent to the complex, there are well
maintained grounds for Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Lawn Tennis.

ACADEMIC STRUCTURE & PEDAGOGY

With a total intake of 120 students annually, NLIU hosts over 600 students enrolled in both Graduate and Undergraduate
programmes. The integrated five year B.A.LL.B.(Hons.) programme and the one year LL.M. programme accept students through
the intensive Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Additionally, the University provides a postgraduate course called the
Master of Science in Cyber Law and Information Security (MSCLIS) as well as a Ph.D. programme.
Exchange Programmes
The Centre for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP) of the University of Washington, Seattle,
USA, offers scholarships to two students every year to attend their summer workshop on Intellectual Property Law.
The University of Lucerne, Switzerland accepts two students every year for a student exchange programme.
Georgia State University, USA for exchange of students & teachers.
Institute of Air & Space Law, Faculty of Law, McGill University, Canada.
Leiden University, Netherlands.
Teaching Methodology
NLIU is one of the two Law Universities in India that follows the intensive trimester system for the BA LLB (Hons.) programme,
wherein the year is divided into three trimesters of about 60 working days each. Interestingly, besides the submission of written
projects and their presentation for every subject, NLIU is the only University that has mid-term and end-term exams within each
trimester. Thus, throughout 15 Trimesters, every student undergoes a rigorous schedule of 5250 Compulsory Credit Hours, 750
Compulsory Clinical Hours, 140 Written Examinations, 240 days of Work Experience, 66 Compulsory Research Papers, 7
Compulsory Seminar Papers and 73 Compulsory Oral Presentations.
The students are trained to perceive legal problems in their multi-dimensionality, thereby contributing to the training of socially
conscious professionals. The faculty prepares extensive teaching material, which is revised and updated regularly to aid the
lectures. In each trimester, students are taught four core courses and at least two skill courses like Legal Writing, Computer
Science, Accountancy, etc. In the final year, along with compulsory subjects, students can choose their own elective courses for
their specialization.

STUDENT ACTIVITY CELLS

NLIU LAW REVIEW
NLIU Law Review is a first of its kind endeavour to encourage and inculcate in the students a spirit of legal research. It is a biannual, peer-reviewed law journal which seeks to focus on the burning issues of the highest quality in the legal scenario and
promote interest in the same. It has published eight issues so far and Volume 5 Issue 1 is underway.
MOOT COURT ASSOCIATION (MCA)
MCA is a student-run body which bears the responsibility of encouraging mooting activity on campus. It organises internal
pool selections and Intra-batch Competition for freshers. It also orients various moot court competitions and client
counselling competitions to a selected pool of students.

ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION CELL (ADRC)
NLIU has done pioneering work in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution. The University boasts of the oldest ADR cell
in India (estd. 2007). ADRC shoulders the responsibility of exposing the students to top-notch training in mediation and
negotiation and polishing them to represent India on a global level. The ADRC has been instrumental in co-ordinating
significant activities, from organizing lectures to hosting the largest mediation competition in the country.

CENTRE FOR BUSINESS & COMMERCIAL LAWS (CBCL)
CBCL is a UGC accredited body established with an aim of facilitating corporate awareness and research. As a method of
generating interest and discussion among the students, it conducts weekly corporate discussion series and guest lectures
delivered by experts in the field of business law. It is also a nascent storehouse of corporate law resources.

CELL FOR STUDIES IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (CSIPR)

CSIPR was created with a vision to promote the culture of knowledge creation in India. It assists in organising lectures and
workshops at national and international levels. Currently, it is preparing a compendium of cases on IP Law for the Ministry of
Human Resource Development, Government of India.

CRIL is an academic association of students affiliated to the International Law Students Association, aimed at promoting
interest and research in the field of international law. It also conducts regular lectures and discussions on various international

CELL FOR AWARENESS AND RESEARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES (CARES)
Founded in the year 2007, CARES is a cell dedicated not merely towards environmental advocacy but rather effective
environmental action. In the past, CARES has played a major role in garnering public support and organising clean-up drives
and blood donation camps.
Flagship Events: Green Mock Parliament, 2015; Biosanctum- National Seminar on Biodiversity Conservation, 2016
Initiatives: Panel Discussion on 'Sustainability as a Career', 2015; Clean-up Drive & Nukkad Natak in association with the
Bhopal Municipal Corporation and M.P. Pollution Control Board.
CELL FOR STUDIES IN MEDIA LAW
The Cell aims to promote research, debate and dialogue on legal and ethical issues related to media in India and to inculcate a
spirit of scholarly discussion on media laws. It has also conducted various lectures like guest lecture by Prof. Upendra Baxi,
eminent journalist Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta and has also screened various documentaries and movies relating to issues on
Media.

JUS CULTURA
Jus Cultura, the Literary, Debating and Quizzing Society aims to harness and nurture the creative acumen of students. The
Literary Society conducts foreign language classes for Spanish and German, and holds various activities like Spell Bees,
Book Readings, and Poetry Slams Book Club. The Debating Society organizes weekly practice debates on issues of
contemporary relevance. Moreover, the Quizzing Society organises 'Wednesday Quizzes' to keep the students intellectually
engaged.

ALUMNI AFFAIRS CELL
The Alumni Affairs Cell, in collaboration with the NLIU Alumni Association, has been able to mobilize and garner support of the NLIU
fraternity to foster and nurture a healthy and long-lasting relationship between the alumni and the students. The Cell believes that
cohesion and cooperation are the keys to achieve holistic excellence. The Cell has been actively organising lectures on contemporary
legal issues to disseminate knowledge and increase interaction between current and old students.

PEOPLE UNITED FOR LAW, EDUCATION & RESEARCH (PULER)
PULER is a social welfare group that works on providing primary and secondary education to children of nearby villages of Mindori,
Mindora, and Kerwa. Apart from the education program, PULER also runs an active arts, music, dance and computer skills program and
regularly conducts legal awareness campaigns and research studies. In the past, it has organized notebook distribution and blood
donation camps.
Initiatives: Medical Camp and Medical Awareness Drive (in collaboration with Peoples Hospital), 2015; Library inauguration at
Mindori government school, 2014 (in collaboration with Sanskaar Valley School and DPS Bhopal)
SPORTS COMMITTEE
The Committee conducts and encourages sporting activities throughout college and organises extramural and intramural tournaments in
the university. It also ensures providing leisure time activities in college including zip- lining, archery, paintball, tug of war, to foster
greater participation of the student community in sports.

Flagship Event: 7 Virudhaka- Annual Sports Fest, 2015 with a participation of around 500 students across 20 colleges.
ATHENA
Athena, the cultural society, provides a platform to the student community to nurture and showcase their talents in the fields of dramatics,
music, art and photography. The society actively conducts street plays and movie screenings. In the past, it has also collaborated with
SPICMACAY, a government endeavour for promoting Indian art and culture among the youth.

CELL FOR HUMAN RIGHTS & ACCESS TO JUSTICE (CHRAJ)

CHRAJ endeavours to create awareness in the field of human rights through seminars, workshop and on field experience. It also issues a
bimonthly newsletter with research articles analysing contemporary human rights issues in various parts of the world.

Initiatives: Lecture and Discussion by Ms. Sonal Giani on 'LGBT Rights; Documentary Screening of 'The Islamic State
GENDER JUSTICE CELL
The Cell endeavours to promote gender equality and eradicate gender injustices against men, women and LGBTS. It has been
instrumental in conducting empirical researches on issues like human trafficking in and around Bhopal.
Initiatives: Safe City Workshop with Youth in Educational Institutes; Intra-College Debate on Gender Stereotypes; 'Saamya', a blog to
address concerns on gender issues.
CELL FOR CONSUMER STUDIES
The Cell was established under the aegis of the Chair on Consumer Protection and Welfare established by the Ministry of Consumer
Affairs, Government of India. In the backdrop of increasing cases of mischief against consumers and the loopholes in the existing legal
machinery, it seeks to create awareness and promote consumer empowerment.
ECONOMIC & FOREIGN POLICY CELL (EFP)
EFP endeavours to find solutions to pressing economic and international relations problems. The Cell, in its first year of inception, has
organized discussions on complex issues ranging from the economic quagmire of Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the Greek Crisis and
Future of Eurozone.
MANTHAN
Concerned with promoting the standards of legal awareness in the University and with an aim to develop NLIU as a knowledge hub for
legal development in the country, Manthan was conceived as a forum to discuss current affairs for social awareness. It aims to bring
together students as well as the faculty of the University to discuss, debate and deliberate on issues of national and international
importance.
CENTRE FOR CIVIL AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE ADMINISTRATION
The Centre aims to generate interest in concurrent areas of civil and criminal research. In light of the same, the Cell has organized panel
discussions, essay writing competitions and guest lectures, the most prominent one being the lecture on 'Forensic Science and its
importance in Criminal Law'.

ABOUT THE BATCH

The Batch of 2017 portrays the myriad facets that it has conscientiously accumulated over the course of years in the University. The Batch displays an
outstanding record in academic pursuits and has attained extensive work experience in diverse sectors and practice areas. The academic performance of
the entire batch has consistently remained good. A resounding testament to their hard work and oratory skills is the multitude of victories and
overwhelming success in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In addition to their accomplishments in moot court and alternative
dispute resolution competitions at the national and international level, the Batch has also displayed exemplary performance in debates and sports by
bringing laurels to the University. Moreover, the bold and articulate expressions of the Batch are a remarkable contribution to several reputed

PLACEMENT COORDINATION COMMITTEE

The Placement Coordination Committee (PCC) has been set up with the purpose of serving as a transparent, credible and accountable interface between prospective
employers and graduating students. It is engaged in coordinating internships and placements, for which it seeks to instil functional knowledge and specific skills amongst
the students by:

Organising workshops and seminars conducted by various luminaries on:

Placement-related subjects and topics

Resume Writing
Group Discussion & Personal Interview Process

Judicial Services & Civil Services

Organising regular career counselling, mock interviews and group discussion programmes for the graduating batch.

3.

Maintaining a catalogue of recent developments in the field of law to generate awareness amongst students.

The PCC works to ensure that final recruitments are conducted in a fair and transparent manner so as to maximize the interest of both the students and recruiters.

PLACEMENT PROCESS
A. Pre-Placement Offer (PPO)
According to the placement rules at NLIU, prospective employers are requested to intimate the PCC of any PPO to any student of the

Batch of 2017 by 15 March, 2016.
B. Campus Placement
Placement at NLIU shall commence in the month of April and Day Zero is scheduled for 1st - 3rd April, 2016.
Pre-Placement Talk (PPT): The recruiters may engage the students in an interactive session, either on campus or through videoconferencing, highlighting the salient features of the organisation, the job profile being offered, remuneration, terms and conditions of
employment and other relevant information as the recruiter thinks fit. They may also conduct lectures on niche areas of law. Such PPTs
may be conducted from 26th 31st March, 2016. The recruiters are urged to indicate their preferred dates for such talks to the PCC, either
by e-mail or telephonic communication, at least a week in advance. Slots shall be allotted strictly on a first-cum-first serve basis.
Recruitment: Recruiters are welcome to follow their own recruitment process, broadly within the framework of Group Discussions,
Written Tests and Personal Interviews. Organisations can also opt for Telephonic Interviews and interviews via Video Conferencing.

Any screening process that the recruiters wish to conduct prior to the interview shall take place on 31 March, 2016. The recruiters are
requested to intimate the PCC with their preferred dates in the final placement schedule at the earliest.
Placement Rules
If a member of the Campus Recruitment Process receives an offer of employment independent of the PCC and accepts it, he/she will
be barred from any further participation in the Placement Process.
If a member of the Placement Process receives an offer of employment, it would be deemed to be an acceptance of the offer by the
member. Thereafter that member is barred from any further participation in the Placement Process.
With more than one employer recruiting from the campus on the same day , the results will be declared after all the interviews for the
day are over and if a candidate is selected by more than one organization, the choice of selection lies with the candidate. Thereafter
the candidate is barred from any further participation in the Campus Placement Process. In such a scenario, the prospective
employers are urged to provide a waiting list of candidates.
Decision of the Faculty Co-ordinator (PCC) regarding any dispute arising during the course of the entire Campus Placement Process will
be taken keeping in mind the larger interest of the students and will be final and binding upon all interested parties.
