The Earths resources have been depleting at a faster rate than it can be

replenished. The Global Footprint Network has estimated that the worlds
population currently consumes the equivalent of 1.6 planets, and this
figure will rise to two planets by 2030 based on current trends. This is
accelerated by the fact that developing economies grow and uses more
resources.
There is a growing need to work together to reduce our resource intake.
Increasing awareness has been created for this issue which is evident
through this various factors. Firstly, this can be seen from the growing
adoption of Earth Hour around the world. Earth Hour is formally on the 19 th
of March, 8.30-9.30pm in Singapore. This Earth Hour idea originated in
2007 but has now grown to been adopted in over 178 countries and over
7,000 cities. Millions of people from 178 countries and territories were
expected to take care in the Earth Hour this year, where important
monuments and buildings such as the Empire State Buildings, switched of
all its lights for this one hour. Even, SMU switched of its lights during this
hour. During this hour, even though the amount of electricity saved may
not be substantial, but this collaboration to honor Earth Hour only shows
the growing commitment of bodies to work together to help the Earth,
showing the moment of global solidarity about the global Earth Problem.
Secondly, it can be seen through Singapores growing emphasis on
sustainable development. Quoted by Dr Balakrishnan who said that
Singapore is willing to invest in new technology and new partnerships for
the sake of sustainability, Singapores eforts towards sustainable
development is recognized through its many environmental initiatives.
One key initiative that is worth mentioning is that of the Changi Airport.
The Changi Airport established a set of targets to cut energy use and to
increase the proportion of recycled water used at Changi. Singapore
Changi Airport aims to reduce the consumption of electricity and use more
of recycled water at its terminal buildings over the next three years, as
part of its contribution towards environmental sustainability. Various
initiatives have been implemented, including dimming lights at airport
terminals by as much as 50% during of-peak hours, using natural lighting
where possible, and installing motion sensors in areas such as toilets and
offices to conserve electricity.
In conclusion, I would like to submit that it is a urgent concern that one
day, the earths resources may run out. It is praiseworthy that
stakeholders have all taken eforts to reduce their environmental footprint
on the earth, but for the eforts to be successful, there needs to be a
collaborative efort to sincerely reduce the footprint on earth. However,
human greed and wants are things that are still prioritized over that of
human earth
