detector.Thelightemitterisconstantlyon.Wheneverthatlighthitsanearby
object,someofthelightisreflectedbacktothedetector.Theclosertheobject
is,themorelightwillbereflected.Bymeasuringtheoutputofthelightdetector,
youcangetaroughapproximationofhowclosetheobjectit.
Thisisn'texactbecausetheamountofreflectedlightalsodependson
thephysicalpropertiesofthereflectingsurface(sometimescalleditsreflectivity
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reflectivity)).However,itworkswellenoughtouse
toactivatespecialeffectsinahauntedhouse.
Ichosetouseinfraredlightforthissensorbecauseitisinvisibletothehuman
eye.Soyourguestswon'tnoticeit.Alsoitwon'texperienceasmuch
interferencefromthelightingintheroom.

Step3:TheSensor

TheIRLEDisconnectedtothe5Vsupplywitha33ohmseriesresistor.Tofind
theappropriateresistorvaluefortheLEDusethisformula:
ResistorValue=(SupplyVoltageLEDVoltage)/LEDCurrent.
Inmycircuit,thesupplyvoltageis5V.TheLEDisratedfor1.3Vat150mA.This
gavearesistorvalueof24.7ohm.TheclosestresistorthatIhadabovethis
valuewasa33ohmresistor.SoIusedthat.Becarefultonotoverloadthe
resistor.A33ohmresistorwillexperienceabout1/2wattifpower.Ifyoudon't
havearesistorratedforthatmuch.Youcanusetwo68ohmresistorsinparallel.
OryoucanusemultipleLEDsinseriestobringdownthevoltageacrossthe
resistor.
Theemitterofthephototransistorisconnectedtoground.Thecollectoriswired
toa10kohmresistorthatisconnectedto5V.Anadditionalwireisconnectedto
thecollectortoactasanoutputpinforthesensor.Isolderedthesensor
componentstogetheronasmallpieceofperfboard.Iaddedthreepinsto
connectthesensortothesignalprocessor.
Toensurethatonlyreflectedlightisdetectedbythephototransistor,itis
importanttoaddalightbarrierbetweentheLEDandthephototransistor.The
mosteffectivewaytodothisistoputablackpieceofheatshrinktubingaround
thephototransistor.Thisalsohelpstomakethesensormoredirectional.

Step4:SignalProcessingWithanArduino

InmostcasesyouwilluseamicrocontrollersuchasanArduinotomonitorthe
signalfromthesensor.Todothis,connectthegroundterminalfromthesensor
totheGNDpinontheArduino.Connectthe5Vwirefromthesensortoeither
the5VpinoradigitaloutputpinsettoHIGH.Thenconnectthesignalwirefrom
thesensortoananaloginputpinontheArduino.
TheAnalogReadfunctionmeasuresthevoltageofthesignalcomingfromthe
sensor.Whenthevoltagedropsbelowasetthreshold,theArduinoactivatesthe
yourspecialeffects.Hereisanquickexampleofthecodethatyoucoulduse.

andapotentiometer(variableresistor).Connectthe5Vsupplytoonesideofthe
potentiometerandtoV+pinontheIC.Connectthegroundwiretotheotherside
ofthepotentiometerandtotheVpinontheIC.Thenconnectthenoninverting
input(markedas"+"tothecenterleadofthepotentiometer.Lastlyconnectthe
invertinginput(markedas"")tothesignalwirefromthesensor.
Thisconfigurationoftheopampfunctionsasanadjustablecomparator.The
potentiometersetsthereferencevoltageforthesensor.Thenwheneverthe
signalfromthesensordropsbelowthisreferencevoltagetheoutputgoesHIGH.
Dependingonwhatkindofcircuityouwanttoactivate,youmaywanttheoutput
tobeaLOWsignalinstead.Youcandothisbyswitchingthewiresconnectedto
theopamp'sinputpins.Soifyouconnectthesensortothenoninvertinginput
andconnectthepotentiometertotheinvertinginput,theoutputwillbeLOW
wheneverthesensorisactivated.
