INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
ART IN CONTEXT: RELIGION IN WORKS OF ART
CALL FOR PAPERS

The organization for the development of scientific research in the field of philology and humanities
Litera, in collaboration with the Research Center of the Serbian Academy of Science and Arts
and of the University of Ni, is organizing the 2 nd International Symposium titled Art in Context:
Religion in Works of Art. PhD students and young researches are invited to take part in the
conference, which will be held on September 25, 2015 at the University of Ni (Room 8) at 10 AM.
Our aim is to host a group of young researches in the field of philology and other humanities who
are interested in examining the religious motifs in art. It seems that certain relations between art
and religion need to receive closer critical attention. What is the importance of religion in art? To
what extent does religion exert influence on artistic production or vice versa has art had (and
how) any effects on religion? What is the authors attitude towards religion do they conform to,
adapt, oppose or subvert a particular religious doctrine in their works? What is the position of
religion in contemporary art? Does its role vary in different national literatures and literary
traditions? How to critically approach a work of art from the religious point of view? Does religion
in the works of the so-called non-fantasy fiction resemble existing religious dogmas? How is a
religious creed built in fantasy works does it draw on the elements of existing religions?
The contributors are invited to deliver a 15-minute presentation. Each session of three or four
successive presentations is followed by a 30-minute discussion.
The working languages of the conference are: Serbian (and related languages Croatian, Bosnian,
Montenegrin), Bulgarian, Macedonian, Polish, Czech, Slovak and English.
The participants are invited to fill in and submit the application form by August 20, 2015, to
uglitera@gmail.com
The participants will receive a notification of acceptance together with the provisional program no
later than September 10, 2015.
