H ollie Jay Bowes, better
known as Michaela McQueen in
Hollyoaks has teamed up with Behn
Taghinejad and Nick Gozem of the
brilliant League Liege to form a
new and unique band, Jeanie in the
Radiator.
They have only been together since
November last year and have al-
ready built up a loyal base of fans
on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace.
With a fresh new sound, a blend of
acoustic melodies and funky elec-
tric beats, it’s easy to see why
Jeanie in the Radiator are ones to
watch in 2010. With tracks such as
Building 30, Apt. 10, Punchdrunk
and Scarlet’s favourite Never Again
already recorded its clear these
guys have talent!
Scarlet caught up with the trio on a
rare day off for a quick chat...
Scarlet – Hey guys thanks for com-
ing down. So how did you all meet?
Hollie - I'll let nick explain this one
hahaha!! I secretly fancied Behn at
first so he caught my eye hahaha!
Bet you didn't know that!
Nick - I had seen Hollie a few times
having done some work as an extra,
and had once overheard her talking
about a really weird film she had
seen when she was little but had no
idea what it was. From her descrip-
tion of a 'creepy singing woman
crushing snakes under her feet' I
knew it to be the David Lynch film
Eraserhead which is one of mine
and Behn's favourites. So when
Behn and I were out in Manchester
and bumped in to Hollie, I told her
what the film was and she sug-
gested that we all get together to
watch it and so one of the more
bizarre evenings of our lives was
organized!
Scarlet – What made you decide to
make music together?
Hollie - Been a singer since I was
little and have always written my
lyrics since I was about 14! My
mamma is an amazing singer too
and my aunty is an established jazz
singer. My cousin played guitar for
Girls Aloud when they were on tour
and my other cousin was in the
Russian orchestra so you could say
it runs in the family!
Nick - Well I have been playing gui-
tar for nearly 13 years now, and
Behn and I had been writing songs
together for our band League Liege
for the past 3 years. About a month
after we met Hollie we were chat-
ting about music and she men-
tioned how she'd like to start
singing in a band as she has a great
voice and writes lots of lyrics and
poetry. I said that we'd be more
than happy to write the music for
the lyrics and it worked really well.
Behn – Yeah after getting to know
each other we discovered each
other’s musical talents. Hollie had
heard mine and Nick’s band,
League Liege, and we had heard
Hollie’s amazing singing voice on
various recordings she had done in
the past. From then on we started
working on songs together and the
results have been outstanding so
far!
Scarlet – So who came up with the
name Jeanie in the Radiator?
Behn - The name comes from the
film ‘Eraserhead’ by David Lynch,
when we first met we planned to
watch the film together and discuss
its meaning as a sort of bonding
session. When we finally watched
it, we were highly inspired. The
name is a reference to the lady in
the radiator, who sings about her
insecurity and longing to be in a
better and happier place.
Hollie – Well me and Nick were re-
ally buzzing from making building
30 apartment 10 and were chatting
on facebook chat n literally laughed
our way through different names
but I'll let nick explain a bit more...
Nick - I think me and Hollie were
shooting a few ideas around one
night, and we ended up coming up
with Jeanie in the Radiator as refer-
ences to both Hollie's birth name
'Jean' and the 'Lady in the Radiator'
from Eraserhead that Behn men-
tioned. We avoided going for the
he Radiator
'and the Radiator' as there are far
too many “And The”s around at the
moment.
Scarlet – Who are your biggest in-
spirations?
Hollie - Imogen Heap, Lady Gaga,
though the lads aren't impressed
with that! Haha, and Kate Bush. I
like my indie music too so I have all
different kinds of inspirations re-
ally!
Behn - Mine and Nick’s inspirations
are pretty similar buy they vary
greatly. We are inspired by all
kinds of music, from rock bands
such as Radiohead and Sigur Ros,
to folk music such as Nick Drake
and Bon Iver, to hip-hop such as
subtle and Aesop rock.
Nick - For me, my biggest music in-
spirations would have to be Thom
Yorke and Doseone (an American
alternative hip-hop artist). Both
have taught me to strive to think
outside the box more than anyone
else is doing at the minute. With
Jeanie in the Radiator especially
though I think, along with Hollie
that Kate Bush is a big inspiration
as she's got to be the best female
