NO.1
Which technology has made the greatest impact on people's lives in your
country: airplanecomputer or television? Use specific reasons and examples to
support your response.
i am a foodie, and when ive got free time i love to search for recipe/c
ooking book online and try it out in my own kitchen, therefore, id lik
e to say that computers have made the greatest impact on our life her
e in China. one reason is that/because computers have given us access to the a
ge of the Internet, thus people can find whatever information they want by clicki
ng a few buttons. For example, if you are going to find out information about the
tourism industry in any city here in China, all you have to do is to key in tourism
and the name of that city on your computer, and you would get tons of results fo
r your reference. Furthermore, computers have also saved us a lot of time by co
mputerizing a lot of things. since they are capable of multitasking and high spee
d calculating, they have enabled us to be more efficient in life and at work. when
i want to prepare something in my kitchen, i only need to press a few buttons an

d the computers in the microwave oven would take care of everything else, savin
g me heaps of time of trouble, which can be a fine example.
Therefore, I definitely think the computer has made the greatest impact on our li
ves.

NO.2
Describe the greatest period of your life and explain why.
I love traveling, a lot, therefore when i think of those great periods in my life, i th
ink of the time when i get to travel a lot. so i think the greatest period is definitel
y during my college years. when i was in college, ive got plenty of time available
and also a bunch of friends who share my interest. so during each summer or spr
ing holidays we would always arrange a trip somewhere. For example,.during t
hat period, ive learned more about the world and about myself. for example, ive
made up my mind in becoming a tour guide. and also ive learned more about th
e importance of cultural preservation.
I am a foodie, so when i think of those great periods in my life, i think of the time
when i get to enjoy food the most.
I love reading books, so when i think of those great periods in my life, i think of t
he time when i get to enjoy reading the most.
Those years in the ivory tower are years of indulgence.
NO.3
Choose a job lawyer, animal doctor, restaurant owner, which on you prefer
i love reading detective novels, sherlock Holmes is always my favorite. so if i hav
e to choose from the three, i think i would like to become a lawyer. because as a l
awyer i have the chance to do justice. because you have to use your deduction ski
ll to investigate and reason and argue, and i think ive developed a good sense of
deduction since i was very little. and ive seen many movies in which lawyers hav
e protected the right of victims and put criminals to justice. To me, becoming a l
awyer is like becoming a superhero.

NO.4
give advice about how to make friends in a new city
well, i have two recommendations.

to start with, i think he can try his best to make more friends. For example, he can try his
best to be nice and polite to people at work or in life, and this would win him respect so
people may realize that hes a friendly person and then would like to get acquainted/fami
liar. for example, he can start from getting to know his neighbors, which would not be a t
ough one i think.
In addition, he can always try to turn to others for help. for example, he can find a local
club or association that he is interested in, and there he can find a lot of people sharing t
he same interest. its always easier to make friends with those who share your interests. s
o the club members can give him a lot of help i think.
These are the two pieces of advice ive love to give to my friends.

NO.5
describe a job
you admired but you will NOT choose it yourself
well, i am a foodie therefore ive always been dreaming of becoming a grea
t chef. so i get to prepare the best dishes and even create a lot of delicacy that no
one has every tried. for example, ive got a friend who has studied cooking in Fra
nce and hes become a blue-labeled chef and opened his own restaurant when he
came back, which is indeed amazing. however, this is mostly just a dream and i s
uppose i would not become a chef. because im not really good at this and my fa
milies would never support me on that. for example, when i tried to cook someth
ing is the kitchen, i always accidentally burn something. And my families always
want me to become a lawyer or a banker, which may be more respected in our cu
lture. Therefore, even though id love to become a great chef, pursing my dream i
s not going to happen in my life, i think.
NO.6
Describe why organizing time is challenging for university students and why it is
important?
welli think there are two reasons.
To start with, there is the objective reason. when you are in university, there are just too
many temptations/attractions/things to do, so organizing time can be complicated. For ex
ample, university students have to balance their time on studying and social life; also the
y have to spare sometime on doing a part-time job. All of these requires efficient time m
anagement skills, yet nobody is teaching students how to do this, therefore, it is very cha
llenging.
Moreover, university students are constantly under time pressure, therefore it is importan
t for them to manage their time well. for example, ever since week 1/the orientation wee
k, students have to work on multiple papers towards their deadlines; if they cannot mana
ge to have enough time, they may easily fail these subjects. and also, some students get
distracted by all sorts of activities on campus, so they procrastinate on their study, so it is
important for them to realize how to organize their time.

a disorganized timetable would make it difficult to fit in any new arrangement or someth
ing happened accidentally.
NO.7
volunteer work

Im pretty good at computer, therefore, i would choose to teach people how to se

arch for information in libraries. because i think i am capable of doing that and i
m glad to help others with such need. for example, when i was studying in colleg
e, ive helped my classmates to do research online and he thanked me a lot for d
oing that.although id also like to work with children or to help get everything in or
der in a library, i think i should do something im really good at, therefore
Im a very organized person,
NO.8

adequate
well, i like jogging a lot, however, i dont think universities can offer a running trac
k/routes/path for students to enjoy jogging. therefore, i hope universities can incr
ease funding for sports facilities on campus. To start with, i think by doing so stu
dents like me can better enjoy their favorite sports on campus, which can indeed
help them to relieve their pressure for studying. In addition, the state of the arts/ t
he first class sports facilities can also attract more promising students talented in
sports and this would bring more achievements and honor to universities.

NO.8
Talk about your favorite book when you were a child. Explain in details why you
liked to read it.
i was and still am a foodie, therefore, when i was little, i liked to read a lot of thin
gs about delicious foods/local delicacy/cuisine in different cultures. i remember t
hat my parents have bought me a book called Food Dictionary, which is indeed
my favorite. I got the book when i was 7, and my father got to travel a lot abroad,
so sometimes he brought me something as gift. Once he gave me a this book ful
l of pictures and said that i would love it. When Ive opened it, i just couldnt have

enough of it. It gave detailed description of foods around the world, for example,
it had pictures of thousands types of curry from Indian and even more types of S
ushi from Japan. Moreover, they even had detailed instruction about how to mak
e these foods. Although i could not cook back then, i fell in love with the book im
mediately..I love this book not only because it has fulfilled my desire for food, but
also because i have learned a lot from reading it.

NO.9
If you had a chance to learn new things, which one would you
choose to learn? Select one of the following and explain your
reasons: 1. Play a new sport, 2. fly a plane, or 3. play a new
instrument.
I want to have more adrenaline rush

well, because im really good working with children, so if possible, Id like to give
them a lecture. because i think i can have my ways to settle them down is a clas
sroom and keep their attention for a long period of them. i think i can make a sm
all video clip, using cartoon to show them what environmental protection means.
we can even practice some drama to teach more children how to save our planet.
NO.11
Talk about an important decision that you have made. Explain why this decision
was important for you in details.
im a foodie and i have decided to become a successful chef and i think this is th
e most important decision that i have ever made. because, first of all, this has d
ecided on the career path that i am going to take. you know in our culture, chef if
not a very respectable job, some parents may even think that working in a kitche
n is a shame. However, ive always wanted to be a chef, being able to prepare fo
ods for many people who share my interests. so I think this is a very honorable/i
deal occupation. In addition, this is the first time that ive decided to follow my he
art instead of others opinion, which has made me very proud. Therefore, this is
very important.
NO.12

If you can have a part-time job at the university, what position would you choose;
a lab assistant, a campus tour guide, or a library assistant? Why?
well, ive spent quite a lot of time in our library, and i know the place like the back
of my hands. so i want to be a library assistant.
NO.13
Talk about your favorite book when you were a child. Explain in details why you
liked to read it.
NO.14
Describe a memorable experience in a restaurant or cafe.
well, im a foodie and i have a very strict requirement about food that i ordered in
a restaurant, which is when a dish is served i want to hear the story behind this
dish. once ive enjoyed a wonderful dinner with my friends in a restaurant that is
over 100 years old. I think that experience is memorable not only because Ive ta
sted some of the most delicious foods that ive ever tried, but also because ive l
earned a lot from that place. when the waiter serves a dish, he would explain the
name and ingredients and the meaning behind the presentation. so you can enjo
y a dish with a story to back it up. it makes the dinner a totally different experienc
e. you are not only feeding your stomach/belly, you are also feeding your brain. s
o that is what we call brain feast.
NO.15
have a good time
Well, i love singing, so sometimes my friends and I would go to KTV and sing a song or
two. once weve sung in a local KTV for a whole night, and though very exhausted, we a
ll enjoyed that. conservative
NO.16
Imagine that you have to stop using cell phone for a month. Would that be
difficult for you?
well, im a heavy mobile phone user, therefore, if i could not use my mobile phone for a
month, i think it would be very difficult. first of all, i couldnt stay in touch with my frie
nds. well, im used to getting updates about my friends from APPs on my mobile phone,
without it, im kinda cut off from my friends. Whats worse, i just dont another way to h
elp kill time.
NO.17

Your friend has been offered a job that's far away from his hometown. Do you
think he should take it or not? Give specific reasons and details to support your
response.
generally, i think he should take it. because when you start a new life in a new place whe
re nobody knows you, its like youve got a second chance to start over. so you can be a
better version of yourself this time. for example, since no one knows you, so you dont h
ave to be nervous of losing face, you can try to be social and open to others. like when i
was little i was very nervous, because i grown up in a little town where everybody know
s everybody. but after ive went to college in another city, that problem has gone forever.
Although some people may worry that starting a new life in a new city can be difficult, a
challenging life is more exciting.
therefore, I would recommend him to take the job.
NO.18
Describe a news article or a story that you are interested in recently. Explain why
you think it was interesting. (Include reasons and details in your response.)
well, for the last few months ive been preparing to study abroad, therefore, ive g
rown to be interested in news or stories about oversea education. once Ive hear
d a piece of story on the news about how a Chinese student has opened his ow
n company immediately after graduating from a US university, which was very e
ncouraging. The hero of the story is just an ordinary Chinese student, who has g
ot his bachelor degree in XXXX university. After graduation, he has opened a co
mpany providing math tutoring service online, and within a year, has has made q
uite a small fortune, becoming an icon in the neighborhood. I like the story beca
use it has taught me a lot, one of which is as long as i can work hard, there is al
ways an opportunity waiting for me outside the ivory tower.

NO.1
Some universities expect students to choose their major when they enter
university. Others let students wait until the second or third year. Which do you
think is better and why? Preference

Personally, id prefer to choose my major later on, well, the reason is that i want
to get to know more about myself and about university life before i reach a final
decision. for example, what if ive chosen a subject that was supposed to be fun a
nd practical but after a year ive found that it was tedious and theoretical? so I th
ink having more time i can sit in different classes to get a better idea about what
other subjects are like and then make my call. although some may assume that p
icking your career path earlier can save you a lot of time, i think a wrong decisio
n can cost you even more. Therefore, my preference is to wait until ive know mo
re about everything.
NO.2
Some people believe that it is better for children to grow up in big cities. Others
believe that it is better for children to grow up in small towns or rural areas.
What is your opinion and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support
your response.
generally speaking id prefer to have my children grow up in big cities, the reaso
n is that here children can have better education and healthcare, which i believe
are the two most important things for development of children. for example, wh
en you grow up in small towns or villages, you may not be able to attend world-cl
ass competition or receive education from those prestigious/famous professors a
round the world; however, if you grow up in those metropolises, you can have m
ore of such opportunities. all of these are beneficial to the development of intelli
gence of children. although some people may prefer rural surrounding simply be
cause the air is fresher and the stress is less, i suppose these are not that importa
nt as education and health for the underaged. therefore, my preference is .

NO.3
Some think robots are useful in the future. Some think robots will never be more
useful and smarter than human. Which do you agree
generally speaking, i think robots in the future would be much more useful, even more u
seful and powerful then we are. the reason is that development/advancement in compute
r technology and AI (Artificial Intelligence) and i believe at such pace everything is poss
ible in the near future. for example, lately weve had a AI that has beaten the grandmaste
r in chess and Chinese Go. So i think they would soon be much smarter than we are. alth
ough some people may worry that one day when robots are smarter than us, we mankind
would be destroyed so robots cannot be allowed to be smarter than human, i think such i
dea is only fear against new technology instead of rational thinking. therefore, i believe r
obots can be more useful than we are in the near future.
NO.4
Some answer the phone and text a message in the middle of the conversation, D
o you think this is a good behavior or bad one?

personally speaking, i dont think this is very good because it is not showing resp
ect to the other party in the conversation. For example, when you are discussing
some academic topic with your lecturer and your mobile phone rings, you would
not want to pick it up because you know that the lecturer may not feel being resp
ected. Although some people may think it is not such a big deal and sometimes p
eople do have urgent needs to answer a call or text a message, i suppose that thin
gs can wait for a minute or two. or at least you should apologize first and get that
call. this is a matter of politeness and etiquette. therefore, i dont accept such be
havior.
NO.5
social lives with friends to relax.
personally, id rather stay at home and spend the time i want. because when you
do so, you can have a lot of disposable time, so you can make your own plan. for
example, last weekends, ive stayed at home for two whole days, and i enjoyed th
e casual weekends reading some of my book and take my time. although some pe
ople may argue that getting a social life with your friends can be more relaxing b
ecause you can have someone to share with, when you do so, you cannot take full
control of your disposable time but to share that with your friends as well. theref
ore,id prefer to stay at home.
solitary

NO.6

well, im a family-centered person, therefore id definitely choose to go to my sist

ers party. because she is family and families are always more important to me t
han career or academia. so i would not hesitate going to her birthday party. altho
ugh some people may think helping your professor is more important since you
can give him or her a good impression and meanwhile you get to be part of som
ething scientifically important, for me nothing is comparable to the importance/va
lue of families, therefore, id join my sister in her party.
NO.7

well, i love reading novels and i think lessons on foreign languages are important becaus
e with one more language i can enjoy more authentic novels/literatures in another cultur
e. for example, i like detective novels by Japanese writers, however, i can only read trans
lated version because i dont know japanese. So if universities can offer Japanese langua
ge class, compulsory or not, i would definitely welcome it. although some people may th
ink compulsory class on computer is more important because we have to use computers i
n a lot of areas, we only use simple functions of computers in life so there is no need to l
earn from attending classes. we can likewise learn more about how to use computers thr
ough reading manual or by using it. therefore, i think foreign language classes should be
compulsory in universities.
NO.8
Some students prefer to study in the library. Others prefer to study at home or in
the dormitory. Which way would you prefer and why? Include reasons and
details in your response.
personally, id choose to study in the library because there i can better concentrate and al
so i can easily find resources that i need in my study. for example, a couple of weeks bef
ore the examination, i would spend days of time in library, without disturbance from roo
mmates or parents, i can focus on my study. although some people may think they are m
ore used to the surroundings at home or in their dormitories, so studying there can be mo
re comfortable, to me being comfortable is not something that important. therefore i cho
ose to study in the library.
NO.9
Do you agree that parents put more pressure on students in
school than ever before?
Personally, i agree. the reason is that competition in society has become much more brut
al so parents are doubling their attention on education/academic performance of their chi
ldren. for example, a lot of children were asked to learn knowledges that are much more
ahead of their age. in one example, a friend of mine has a 6 year old son, he was forced t
o learn knowledges that were supposed to be taught in grade two, which can be a fine ex
ample to show that parents have put more pressure indeed. although some parents may h
ave cut some slack for their children, they claim that all they want is natural developmen
t and a happy childhood for their children, that is not very common/that is just for some
privileged families. therefore, i agree that most parents have put more pressure on their
childrens school work.
NO.10

Generally speaking, i dont think it is a good idea. because that would bring much incon
venience to the public, for example, even if people live in big cities may enjoy convenie
nce brought by public transportation, they still need to drive somewhere sometime by th
emselves. life when i need to take my families on a tour to a nearby place, id prefer driv
ing coz it offers better flexibility. and i can stop and go whenever and wherever i want. t
herefore if such convenience is taken away from people, it would not be good. although

some people may think this is the easiest way to fight against traffic congestion, such arg
ument is too weak to hold its ground. Hence,i cannot agree on such proposal.
NO.11
Do you agree or disagree with the statement that its important for students to
study Art and Music in school. Explain your answer in details.
personally speaking, i think it is important. for example, when i was studying in p
rimary schools, ive learned to play the flute and most of my classmates back the
n have picked up some musical instrument. i like to play the flute, not only beca
use it is something to show off, but also because it has given me a channel to let
go my pressure. I suppose the same goes with arts. if you learn painting, and yo
u can use colors and figures to unwind yourself a little bit. although some parent
s may think this is just a waste of time and children should focus on their acade
mic performance, they have ignored benefits that learning arts and music can bri
ng. so i believe that it is important.
NO.12
Do you agree or disagree with the statement that the most important class can't
be taught in the classroom?
yes i agree. because in a classroom, you can only learn theoretical knowledge, however i
n life you can learn practical knowledges and other meaningful lessons. for example, i li
ke geography, but in a geography class i can only learn from pictures and reading text bo
oks. you cannot feel the feature of a place unless you can visit it in person. Its like ive r
ead about the life in Rio and local culture and arts, however, it takes a trip there to truly
appreciate what it is like. Although some people may think as long as one keeps reading
and doing homework, a student can always learn a lot from a class, i think only life has t
he power to turn theory into reality. Therefore, i agree with the statement.
NO.13
key
words: honest opinion.
it is always good to maintain honesty?

generally speaking, i disagree. because it is highly unlikely to stick to that as a ru

le of thumb. in life you sometimes have to yield, hiding some truth simply for the
protection of others. in such cases, saying the truth may not be the appropriate t
hing to do. for example, in a meeting with senior managers in a company, it woul
d not be wise to say something that you know for sure would not be agreed by ot

hers. it would be more important to figure out why people may disagree rather th
an saying the plain truth in front of everyones face. Its a matter of formality and
etiquette to save face for everyone in such scenario instead of yelling out what y
ou believe is true. although some may call this lying, i would call this strategic pe
rsuasion. therefore, i cant agree that one has to tell the truth and nothing but the
truth all the time.
NO.14
Some people think that businesses and industries need to be developed, even if
the development of them affects the environment. Other people think that
environment needs to be protected from the development of businesses and
industries. What do you think?
i think it is more important to protect the environment first and develop business l
ater on. because a large part of our environment is non-renewable and if we sac
rifice environment for economy, then we may have no chance to get environment
recover later on. for example, couples of years ago, Chinese government has sh
ut down hundreds of paper mills and chemical factories along rivers because the
y are making money while destroying rivers. if we do not do so, these rivers woul
d all be polluted, being unable to recover anymore. Although some people may t
hink we can develop economy first and with money we can save environment ba
ck, it is not so simple and there are things we can not recover with no matter ho
w much money. therefore, i believe it is more important to safeguard environmen
t first.
NO.15
Some people speak out in class. Others prefer to listen and quietly observe.
Which do you think leads to greater success in school? Why?
personally, i prefer the latter option because i am a quiet person and i feel more
comfortable learning in such manner. for example, in a history class, i would liste
n carefully while our teach leads us through important historical events. meanwh
ile, i can better concentrate and use my imagination to absorb what the teach is t
eaching. however, if one speaks out a lot in class, he or she may not have much
time left to think things over. although some may say that students can better par
ticipate if they speak up in class, students also need time and setting to think by
themselves. therefore, i dont think those who speak necessarily have better cha
nce to succeed. on the contrary, i think those who can listen and watch carefully
have better odds.

NO.16
Some students prefer to take a test where they must write an essay to a
question. Other students prefer to take a test with objective questions. Which
type of exam question do you prefer? Give reasons and examples in your
explanation.
personally, i prefer to write an essay, because such question can offer a more ho
listic perspective on students understanding of certain topics. for example, in a
history exam, multiple choice questions may be able to tell you how many dates
or names a student has memorized so far, it cannot tell you his or her attitude to
wards an event in history and questions they have that challenges what they hav
e read from books. through an essay, students can better demonstrate their think
ing process when engaged in challenging prompts. although some people may t
hink objective questions are easy to produce and mark, it takes an essay questio
n to test what the student truly know. therefore, i prefer the first option.
NO.17
Do you agree or disagree that teachers should encourage students to have
discussions during class? Give specific reasons and details in your response.
generally speaking, i think it is important for students to discuss in a class, after
all it is a part of learning experience. because when you hold a discussion, not o
nly can students be more engaged, but also we can get an idea about how muc
h students have learned so far. for example, in a history class, when you have in
vited students into a discussion over a certain historical figure, they would be mo
tivated to think critically and express themselves explicitly. and as teachers, we c
an know more about how much students have understand through observing the
ir discussion. Although some parents may worry that too much discussion in clas
s would take away valuable time for lecturing, discussion per se is also an effecti
ve way to learn. therefore, i agree with the statement.
NO.18
Technology devices distance people far more now than before.
personally speaking, i disagree. on the contrary, i believe that technology has brought pe
ople closer to one another. because all kinds of technology devices have enabled us to ov
ercome geographical barriers and we can better keep in touch with each other whenever
and wherever we want, hence shortening the distance between us. for example, a lot of p
eople are using Skype to talk with their friends or relatives on the other side of the earth.

with advancing technology, we can not only speak to them for free, but also talk with the
m face to face through video calls. in such cases, technology has empowered people to c
ommunicate more than ever before. Although some people worry that we have become
more used to communicating online instead of in real life, at least technology has offered
us more opportunities to do so. therefore, i believe that it is bring people closer to each o
ther rather than pulling people apart.

Term: Impact Bias
Definition: people have inaccurate expectations of the impact that certain
events will have on them: both the events intensity and how long it would last.
Lecture:
The professors daughter wanted to apply to this university because her best
friends were applying and because of the universitys great educational
program. She thought her life would be ruined if she didnt get it. It turned out
that she wasnt accepted. While she got very upset about it, she was busy taking
care of her high school graduation and planning her summer vacation. Pretty
soon she forgot about her misfortune of being rejected by the school and moved
on with her life.

Reading: Compound Nesting (biology) two species that are different enough so
as not to compete for food when living together.
Listening: Example of ants in Africa. The bigger ants collect food while the
smaller ones eat the scraps. For the smaller ant, it doesn't need to search
for food. For the bigger ant, the smaller one keeps the nest clean by eating
the leftover food and prevents bacteria from growing.

The professor talks about what animals that dont live underwater do to stay
underwater. The first way is to reduce movement in order to save oxygen. For
example, an alligator hunts underwater by staying very still, with basically no
movement. In doing so, it can cut down its heart rate and reduce the need for
more oxygen. The second way is to minimize the time spent underwater. For
example, a brown pelican dives down to catch fish in the water. It doesnt go
deep and it has air sacks that open in the water. That will help the pelican get
back to the surface as fast as possible for oxygen.
NO.15
The professor talks about two types of suspense in a movie.
The first type is when the audience tries to guess the ending. For example, two
heroes set the same goal, but the audience has no idea who will come out first.
The second type is that the audience knows the ending but has no clue about
the process of getting there. For example, in a love story, the hero and heroine
will undoubtedly meet in the end, but how they meet each other becomes the
intrigue.

cues

fancy
In the lecture, the professor talks about two cues consumers use to judge the
qualities of products. The first is the intrinsic cue, where the customers judge the
products quality by their physical characteristics, such as color, texture, and
size. For example, customers will think a food possesses good qualities if it
tastes good. The opposite is the extrinsic cue, where the customers dont judge
a products quality by its physical characteristics. For example, if a juice is
placed inside a good looking glass bottle and has a good label, consumers will

think it has good qualities. Here the product is evaluated by the external
packaging but not by the taste of the juice itself.
NO.17
There are two ways whales use sounds to survive in the deep ocean. The first is
navigation. Whales detect the refection from objects in order to get a sense of
the right direction. The second is feeding. Since whales travel in groups, they
can call on other whales to see if they found any fish.
