Introduction

Most control panel messages are status messages that display information about the printer's
current operation. In addition, the printer displays warning messages, error messages, and
critical error messages. This document contains a brief description of each message category
and sections that explain each numerical control panel message and recommend what action
needs to be taken to resolve the error.

Status messages
Status messages reflect the current state of the printer. They offer information about
normal printer operation and no interaction is required to clear them. They change as
the state of the printer changes. Whenever the printer is ready, not busy, and has no
pending warning messages, the status message READY is displayed if the printer is
online.

Warning messages
Warning messages display information about data and print errors. These messages
typically alternate with the READY or STATUS messages and remain displayed until
the
(Select) button is pressed. If CLEARABLE WARNING is set to JOB in the
printer's configuration menu, these messages are cleared by the next print job.

Error messages
Error messages communicate that some action must be performed, such as adding
paper or clearing a paper jam. Some error messages are auto-continuable; if AUTO
CONTINUE=ON the printer will continue normal operation after displaying an autocontinuable error message for 10 seconds.
NOTE: Any button pressed during the 10-second display of an auto-continuable error
message will override the auto-continue feature and the function of the button
pressed will take precedence. For example, pressing the CANCEL JOB button will
cancel the job.

Critical error messages

Critical error messages display warnings about device failures. Turning the printer off
and then on can clear some of these messages. These messages are not affected by
the AUTO CONTINUE setting. If a critical error persists, service is required.
NOTE: The control panel messages are listed in numerical order.

PRINTER OFF THEN TURN ON
Description

A critical error has occurred. This error could be the result of a hardware failure, or
there could be a problem with communication or corrupt data. Each of the following
steps is intended to determine whether the 79 error displayed on the printer is the
result of a hardware failure. To ensure the tests are valid, turn the printer on between
steps to determine if the error message has been cleared.

Action
1. Turn off the printer
2. Disconnect the printer from the PC and/or the network.
3. Power the printer on. If the error message does not reappear after
disconnecting from the PC/network, yet reappears once it is re-connected,
verify that the print queue on the PC/server has been cleared of all pending
jobs.

4. Power off the printer and unplug the power cord before proceeding with the
following steps. Take the formatter board out of the printer and then reseat
the various DIMMS or EIO cards.
a. Reseat the formatter back into the printer.
b. Plug the power cord back in.
c. Power the printer back on.
5. If the error returns, power off the printer.
Remove all accessories that have been installed on the printer (for example,
EIO Cards, RAM/ROM DIMMS). If the 79 error disappears after removing all
the accessories, start adding the accessories back one at a time to isolate
which one is causing the issue.
