TEACHING THROUGH VIDEOS

We hope you are enjoying teaching your classes with World English!
The charts below show some suggested strategies to better take advantage
of the World English Video Program as a springboard to developing various
language skills. Strategies for each stage can be used together or
independently.

Before watching the video


1. Tell students what the video clip is going to be about. (Activating prior
language/knowledge)
2. Explain who is who in the video clip. (Activating prior
language/knowledge)
3. For younger learners, present a pictogram of the main events of the
video. (Activating prior language/knowledge)
4. Present students with some scrambled key words. (Activating
vocabulary)
5. Have students predict the pronunciation of these key words. They can
later compare their initial prediction to the actual pronunciation of
words in the video clip, or different accents pronunciation.
(Pronunciation awareness)
6. Present students with a Word Map. A list of key words, or words
which repeatedly appear during the video. Have students tell you what
they think the video will be about. (Predicting)

While watching the video


1. Use PAUSE button at key places to ask students to predict what will
happen in the next scene. (Predicting)
2. With higher levels, use PAUSE button to have students predict an
answer in a dialogue/interview after a question. (Predicting)
3. Repeat scenes and have students take notes. (Note-taking)
4. Point out facial expressions, reactions, things happening In the
background. Have students watch excerpts from the video in mute and
create a story as to what they imagine the conversation is about, or the
narration is about. (Cultural awareness / Predicting)
5. Prepare scripts from excerpts of the video and have students fill in the
blanks. (Identifying vocabulary)
6. Give students a fake script (with mistakes / details different to the
actual video script) and have them identify these mistakes as they
watch the video. (Comparing)
7. Divide the class into two groups. Have each group watch a different part
of the video. Have them make notes for sharing information after they
watch the video. (Sharing information)
8. Minimal pairs: when possible, provide students with a script including
sets of minimal pairs (words which differ in one phonological element)
for them to circle while watching the video. (Pronunciation awareness)

After watching the video


1. Brainstorming: have students shout out the contents of the video. Have
them organize the information in a mind map / or in a story sequence.
(Summarizing / Recalling information)
2. Have students reflect about the video with questions like: what was
your favorite part? What was your least favorite part? What part was
confusing to you? What do you think about what a character in the
video said? Which part would you like to see again? (Recalling
information / discussing)
3. Have pairs exchange information about the excerpt of the video they
watched. (Sharing / Exchanging information)
4. Have students reflect about the topic of the video by comparing the
information in the video with related information from their cultures or
countries. (Cultural awareness)
5. Have students tell each other whether they have experienced a
situation similar to the one displayed by the video. (Discussing /
Comparing)
6. Prepare a how much can you remember? game: devise some
questions about the visual details in the video: cultures, places, clothing,
colors, jewelry, decoration, animals, details, etc. (Recalling information)
