Deciduous Lace Shawl

On this Icelandic influenced shawl, lacy leaves

change shape as they fall to the edging. Knit from
the top down, the tiny leaf lace repeats over 4 rows
and is easy to memorize. The broad leaf border is
optional, and the narrow leaf edging ends with a
crocheted chain cast-off.
Increases in the lace naturally shape the top of
the triangle to curve around the shoulders. The
border can be started after any 16 rows of tiny leaf
lace, or the edging can be started after any 4-row
repeat, making it easy to customize the size.
The shawl looks great in solid and semi-solid
color yarns and can be knit in lace, fingering, and
Shetland/sport/DK weights.
Yardage and Size Information
Instructions are given for three sizes. Yardage
amounts and sizes below are for medium size.
Yardage for small size can be decreased 20 percent
and for large size, increased 30 percent.
Approximate blocked back length changes for lace
weight will be 1.75" (4.5cm), fingering weight
2" (5cm), and Shetland/sport/DK weight 2.25"
(5.5cm).

Shawl Notes
1. Shawl is a triangle made up of 2 triangles
separated by the center stitch. It is knit from
the top down, and after the beginning, it
increases 12 stitches every 4 rows until the
edging.
2. It is helpful to place markers before the center
stitch and the last 2 border stitches, as well
as to hang a safety pin at the edge to mark
beginning of odd numbered rows.
3. Tiny Leaf Lace Repeat can be worked any
multiple of 4 times before starting Broad
Leaf Lace Border. If no border is desired,
the Narrow Leaf Lace Edging can be started
after any 4-row repeat. Stitch count is
given for small, medium, and large sizes.
Where numbers differ, larger sizes follow in
parentheses. (Sample is medium size.)
4. Shawl is finished with a crocheted chain castoff. Suggested hook sizes: Lace weight US C
(2.75mm); Fingering weightUS E (3.5mm);
Shetland/sport/DK weightUS G (4mm).
5. Top edge is curved, so blocking wires should
be flexible to pin curve.
6. Lace can be worked from written instructions
or charts.

7. Wraps-per-inch (wpi) is a way to measure yarn

size. Without stretching, wrap yarn around a
ruler for 1" (2.5cm), and count the strands.

scallops between leaves, and pin chain loops. Leave
in place until thoroughly dry. Trim yarn ends.

Notes
1. See written instructions for cast-on, suggested number of repeats, stitch count, and cast-off.
2. Read charts from bottom to top and from right to left.
3. Since shawl is shaped as two triangles separated by the Center Stitch, for first half of row on Charts 1 and 2, start with 2 Border Stitches and work across to Center Stitch;
for second half of row, again read charts from right to left, ignoring 2 Border Stitches and working them at the end instead of Center Stitch. Chart 3 is worked to ending
stitches, not Center Stitch.
4. Only odd numbered rows are charted. All Even Rows: k2, purl to last 2 sts, k2.
