Positive impacts
NAPLAN gives children an idea of what areas they are
best in, teachers an idea of where certain students
need help, parents an idea of where their children are
at compared to others, and finally schools an idea of
how they rate compared to similar schools (HAYES &
MIKAYLA 2015)
NAPLAN supports an increased focus on literacy and
numeracy skills (Dulfer, Polesel & Rice 2012, p. 31).

Negative Impacts
NAPLAN has created a state of forged data,
manipulated statistics, the withdrawal of certain
students, the coaching of students Teaching has
become nothing more than teaching to the test This is
Australia-wide (O'Mara 2014, p. 18)
the true promise of education data lies not simply in
better test results but in living up to the ideal that
teaching be tailored to each and every student (LANE
2010, p.1)

Personal Reflection
NAPLAN data can be useful at student, teacher and
school level if it is implemented correctly. NAPLAN
results are a good form of data collection but are not
the only form and therefore should be used in
conjunction with other assessments. Concerns with
NAPLAN can be found in the misinterpretation of
data and the often negative influence of the media.
The introduction of the MySchool website turned
into something that was simply used to compare
schools. It fails to take into consideration a multitude
of factors which influence how 'good' a school or
teacher is, therefore the pressure it puts on students
and teachers is unfair and unfounded.
