Introduction
This Article is all about installing HP ALM 12.50 (Evaluation) successfully. Here you can see step-bystep how you can do it successfully even if you are a novice User. The Article contains :
1. Virtual Box Set up (Oracle Virtual Box)
2. MS Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition SP1 64 Bit (Evaluation)
3. SQL Server 2012 64 Bit (Evaluation)
4. HP ALM 12.50 (Evaluation)

At the bottom of this Article you can find the Web links for downloading the Software.
I used here bare minimum Screenshots for making the Article short and you can see only part
of the installation Screenshot. All you have to press either "Next" or "Install" etc Buttons
while installing on your System.

Memory Prerequisite
This is an important thing to be noted. The Minimum is 8GB RAM and Quad Core CPU (4 CPUs) also
expected. If you attempt to do with less Memory, it just throws Error and stops you !

At the bottom of the page of you can see the Hardware, Memory etc. Screenshot

Virtual Machine Setup

Below are the step-by-step Screenshots to set up your Virtual Machine

You can indeed go ahead with 30 to 40 GB Disk Space

The Network Adapter connects to the Internet

This brings to the end of important steps to set up your Virtual Machine
Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition SP1 Evaluation Installation starts now
Below are the step-by-step Screenshots to install the Windows Server
Attach the ISO Image and start the process

Here you should be careful in selecting the option. You have to select the GUI Server type to
get the Server with GUI.

Click on this "Custom"

Computer Name etc

Anyways I just put some Screenshots related to the above settings

Install Virtual Box Guest Additions

Go to "User Accounts" and set a simple password if you wish

Enable the .NET 3.5 Feature

Clone your Virtual Machine

Clone your Virtual Machine in case you need similar OS installation

On the above Link you can see how you can do it step-by-step
In my case the Virtual Machines are on D Drive so I perform these steps

This brings to the end of Server Installation and cloning your Virtual Machine.

MS SQL Server 2012 SP1 Evaluation Edition Installation

Below are the step-by-step Screenshots to install MS SQL Server 2012; Create Database
Instance and Database

Attach the ISO Image and start the process

If everything is fine you see rising green Watermark level

You can surely ignore this download as it does not stop you going forward

You can just install the products relevant to Database Instance which saves your Memory and
Disk Space

The only changes I prefer is to put the Instance related files not in "C:\Program Files". That
makes a good installation ! You just write a directory name to place them in a separate
directory. In my case it was as shown below. The next Screenshot shows you this difference.

Now you can see how the Instance and Database related files are moved in to sub directories

Eject the Software to attach HP ALM 12.50 and the database should be started.
Pin the SSMS Tool to Taskbar so that it is handy for you. You open this tool first and pin it.

You actually do not need to use the "sa" Account which is disabled by default. The ALM
related tables are created without using "sa" Account.
Below are the Screenshots anyways that explain you how you can Enable it. The down Arrow
in red next to "sa" shows it is disabled.

You can set a new password and deselect "Enforce password policy"

Click on "Enabled" and then on "OK/Apply" Button. The disappearance of Arrow in red next
to "sa" shows it is Enabled now
For your information you see how a User is mapped to Databases (it means permission to a
Database)

HP ALM 12.50 Installation

Below are the step-by-step Screenshots to install HP ALM

Click on the circled one to start the installation of HP ALM.

If you see this Warning you can stop this service. Open Task Manager -> Click on Services Tab
and at the bottom you see "Open Services"

Once it is opened you press "d" Key on your keyboard

After you stop the service go back to the installation screen and start again

For this install I went with default directories

Just write down your Server Name/Computer Name/Host Name and Database connection
type is Windows Authentication. That's all you need to enter. Click on "Next" Button

You see a Warning and you confirm with "install" to let it set up

Verify the HP ALM Service

Open Task Manger - > Services

Then Press "h" Key on your keyboard

You can set it to "Manual" so that you use the System Memory for other things if you are not
going to use HP ALM. If you need HP ALM then you have to start it manually.

Let's verify the Database and query one table

Right click on this HP ALM Database and you see the Owner of the Database

Right click on SERV-ST/Administrator to see the User Mapping. Now you can compare this
with previous Screenshot of User Mapping
