Upcoming Rides and Events

April: The season, which has been here all year, really
gets going this month. From road rides like Eroica
Calfornia ride (more on that below) to the start of the
Sierra Cup Mountain Bike Race Series, you can count
on a ride or race every Saturday and Sunday, all month
long. You can also count on the Cycle California! calendar having many of these events. Check out page 14.

flat ride that takes bicyclists around the campus and into the
country a great tune-up ride for the epic rides due up later
this year. The spring offers really nice weather along the Sacramento River: Its not too hot and the hills still have some green
to them. The Red Hawk Ride raises money for scholarships for
students attending Simpson University.

This month there are several multi-day events and on

the weekend of April 8-10, Eroica California is one.
Rolling away from Paso Robles, Eroica riders can enjoy one of
four routes: 38, 65, 85, 120 miles around the hilly country of
the Central Coast. This event gives riders the opportunity to
enjoy a weekend of cycling entertainment, ocean views during
the rides, and a vintage bike Concource dElegance.

Heroic weekend

If soaring with the hawks seems too high, you can opt
instead to run with the pigs at the April 9 Mt. Tam Wild Boar
Half Marathon. This also has a 10K component if youre not
feeling the half marathon distance. From Rock Springs, participants run a combination of paved roadways and the rolling
dirt singletrack trails of Mt. Tam. The course offers views of
Bolinas Lagoon, the Pacific Ocean and Marin County watershed. This event takes place at Mt. Tamalpais State Park.

the seasoned cyclist. Beginning at the
Amador County Fairgrounds in Plymouth,
the routes are 41, 65, 69, 102, and 122
miles. All of these have elevation gain.
There is also a new shorter ride this
year: the Amador Wine Country Tour,
an 18-22 mile ride with 1,000-1,300
feet of climbing. This one takes cyclists
on a route that visits the wineries in the
Shenandoah Valley. Expect beautiful
and sometimes challenging riding through
the Amador and El Dorado wine country
and historic Gold Rush towns.

More off-road racing

On April 23, Grass Valley hosts the first

race in the Sierra Cup regional championship
series. This USA Cycling-sanctioned series
begins with a multi-loop cross-country race
on private property. Participants race a 4 mile

All the series events that take place before
July will be qualifiers for Mountain Bike

Santa Cruz pioneer ride

On April 23 the ride named after the

legendary Mountain Charlie rolls away from
Skypark in Scotts Valley. The Mountain
Charlie Challenge is made up of 10 mile,
100 kilometer, and 100 mile rides through
the Santa Cruz Mountains. The high point
(literally) of the experience is a grind up
steep Mountain Charlie. The after-ride
party has music, food, an expo with artists
and sponsor booths, and family activities.

Classic spring rides

Europe has Spring Classics races and

on April 24, BICYCLING offers its

Spring Classic bike ride (although unlike

the Euro events, this one isnt a race).
These rides explore the roads of southern
Santa Clara County. For your participation, there are 25, 60, and 90 mile routes
along on the same scenic climbs and descents that Specialized uses as its proving
grounds for its bikes and equipment. Your
fee includes the riding, chip timing (with
prizes for five fastest climbers on the long
route); and a post-ride party with lunch,
family activities, expo, and more.

Fat bike adventure

Reservoir slogs

Did you ever see something you wanted

so badly that you had to conceive a lifestyle
change to justify getting it? So it was when
I first saw a fat bike. Those fat, soft tires
looked like they could roll over anything
a Mad Max rider could point them at.
Trails? Fat bikes scoff at trails.
Anyway, my fantasies were overblown,
lurid, and incessant, so I needed a purpose
for getting one. It wasnt going to be snow
riding because, lets face it, brrr. And it wasnt
going to be beach riding, because no matter
how tough the bike, the idea of riding in
salt spray and using a knobby tire to churn
sand onto the bikes drivetrain seems like
an indignity to heap on a machine. It had
to involve exploring areas out of reach

of a conventional mountain bike without

damaging habitat, running afoul of park
managers, or just annoying foot- or hoofbound brethren.
Thats when it hit me: In year four of a
drought, where is there abundant public dirt?
Where else but on the erstwhile reservoir
bottoms, now deserts of rocks, stumps, and
sand, planed free of anything green by the
wide seasonal fluctuations in water level?
Who knows, maybe Id even find lost cities
or detective badges and firearms or cars or
bodies or other weird artifacts such as found
earlier in this drought. All in former habitat
of fishes and well below the sometimehaunts of jet skiers and house boaters.
With the lifestyle image in place, I

By Mick Klasson

plied my wife with so-called reasoning

for a new acquisition. With good-natured
disbelief she conceded to another bike
cluttering the garage. If you dont use it,
you sell it, agreed?
I could face that negotiation if it ever
came up.
So I bought the bike and started rolling.
I headed out to the local greenbelt to practice
a few trips down (and partway up) some
gentle stairs and through faux ravines landscaped with baby head cobbles. I ran the 4
inch wide tires as soft as 6 pounds per square
inch (psi) but settled on about 10 psi as a
compromise between soft rock-wrapping
traction and at least some protection against
rim flats. It was time to go for a real ride.

Proof of Concept:
The Shores of Shasta

Lake Shasta in summer is a sweltering solar cooker with a lake surface for a
reflector. When I arrived at Centimudi
boat ramp on a July afternoon my car
seat was soaked in sweat and the first of
my water bottles was down to the sloshy
dregs. I should have thrown a teabag in
the other one to mask the inimitable flavor
of warm plastic.
The hills around the lake were densely
covered in manzanita and gray pines
above the full water line, but below
that was nothing but red earth and blocky
chunks of rocks temporarily arrested in
their slide into the bottom of the reservoir.

They looked like so many

boxy cheese graters just waiting for the fresh flesh of an
unwary biker.
From above I could see the
terraces, like tree rings, or,
more appropriately, the very
topographic contours they were,
showing former shorelines
carved by waves and boat wakes
as the water level dropped and
held and dropped some more
through weeks, months, and now
years of drought. All I had to do
was get down to one and start

Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay

Getting it done!
Advocacy groups are created out of a
need for something to happen. A need for
positive change. A need to shake up the
status quo. That was certainly the case in
1987, when the East Bay mountain biking
community was threatened with being
locked out of the trails of the popular
urban open space, Oaklands Joaquin
Miller Park. In response, the Bicycle
Trails Council of the East Bay (BTCEB) was created, said the groups current
president Mike Udkow.
The group was one of five charter
members of the international organization called International Mountain Bike
Association (IMBA). The Bicycle Trails

Council is now one of the oldest mountain

bike advocacy groups in the U.S., said
Udkow. The other four groups were
Responsible Organized Mountain Pedalers (ROMP), now known as Silicon Valley
Mountain Bikers, Concerned Off Road
Bicyclists Association (CORBA), Bicycle
Trails Council Marin (now a part of Marin
County Bicycle Coalition), and Sacramento
Rough Riders.
The BTC-EB has been very busy in the
intervening 29 years solidifying its reputation as an organization that advocates for
open access to trails, that works to help
land managers maintain trails, educates
the public through a trail-side bike patrol

By Tracy L. Corral

program, and offers monthly bike rides for

anyone who wants to participate.
Since the groups founding, it has been
a proactive force in encouraging low-impact, environmentally friendly riding and
just as important, cooperation between the
different trail user groups. We advocate
for where we like to ride, Udkow said.
Stewardship of the East Bays trails
comes easy to BTC-EB. The groups
members get out to local parks to do the
regular trail work that most land managers
have neither the human power nor
the budget for. Their volunteers also
participate in the Oakland Bike Patrol,
which is affiliated with IMBAs national

mountain bike patrol program. These

volunteers partner with the Oakland Police
Department to help trail users learn proper
trail etiquette, safety rules, and regulations.
BTC-EB, in addition to working on
trails and patroling Joaquin Miller Park,
offers monthly rides not only for their
members, but for anyone wishing to get
out on the trails with a group.
One of these events, the Gala Ride,
is a no-drop event that takes place at a
different park on the second Saturday of
the month. The group welcomes novice
and advanced trail riders to come out and
learn about the riding.
Depending the size of the group it will
split into smaller groups with their own
leaders, said Udkow.
They also offer regular night rides and a
family ride on Alameda. Its pretty safe to
say theres something for everyone.
BTC-EB volunteers also take underpriviledged kids out to Point Pinole for
monthly rides. The children are lent bikes
and treated to post-ride snacks and cameradie in addition to the outdoor activity.
For four years running, BTC-EB has
sponsored a movie night in which it premiers something new. This years feature
was Inspired to Ride and was doublebilled with a short movie about Joaquin
Miller Park. Udkow was pleased with this
years showing, We sold the more tickets

pedaling this all-terrain sidewalk along the
reservoir.
On the descent to my chosen terrace,
I quickly found that my seat was too
high, and because of the bolts on my seat
tube-mounted water bottle cage, the seat
couldnt go low enough to shake a feeling
that I was perpetually about to nose dive
over the bars and into that sharp-edged
rock jumble. I wound up walking the bike
or pogoing one leg as I slid astride the bike
down to the apparent terrace. Here I discovered that the fat, high-inertia tires have
some pluses and minuses. Yes, they rolled
over all matter of glop and clatter, but they
were not very sensitive to precise instructions as to where this beast-cycle should go.
The bike lumbered in the general direction
I pointed it, mostly doing just fine in the
landscape of sand and brick- to shoebox-

sized rock, but what if, say, I really didnt

want to float over the rock on the edge of
this wisp of a terrace in case it would slide
and carry me into the drink? On this first
trip I was never quite sure the bike was
going to oblige.
It was a short trip and I had a case of the
cumulative willies after the ride. But as
soon as I was driving away, I wanted to be
out there again pedaling flabby donuts of
traction into the unknown.

Next up: Lake Oroville

Standing on Oroville Dam a month

later, sweltering again, I was disgusted.
I couldnt ride this. The inner face of
the dam was covered with rock rip-rap.
The chunks ranged in size from refrigerator
to ice chest. Even the naked shoreline at
both flanks of the dam was just too steep,

like Shasta without the terraces. So I

drove to the nearby visitor center, which
happened to be along a shoreline that
appeared less steep on my topographic
map. The attendant told me yes, it was
okay to ride a bike below the shoreline.
He also looked at me like perhaps my
reservoir wasnt all the way full either.
Happily, there were bike-legal trails
from the visitor center to and along the
shoreline, and soon I was dropping out
from under an oak tree onto the one-time
lakebed. On this mid-drought August day,
the water was about 220 vertical feet
below the maximum full line, exposing a
sloping shoreline 800 feet or more wide.
The upper part of this shoreline had
been barren for so long that there was a
mat of grass over the ground, and I rolled
over this amidst small rocks interspersed

with the occasional stump or skeletal

remnants of a tree or shrub drowned with
the first filling of the reservoir. Soon I was
below the grass and rolling on a thin layer
of sediment out to a point in the lake that
would have been an island earlier in the
year or bass habitat in a normal year.
On the back side of the point the flaking
bedrock was exposed, and the challenge
was to ride as far as I could without dabbing
a foot down when the boulders got too big
or inopportunely strewn. In that skillbuilding fashion, I continued south to the
boat ramp, past a grid of boats at anchor
in the shrinking lake, hunting stretches of
level terrace and the smallest connecting
boulder gardens I could traverse. From the
boat ramp it was a short ascent to the swift
and rolling trail through gray pines and
oaks that finished about a five-mile loop

back to the visitor center.

I was as happy as could be this side of a
half-gallon frosted drink.

At last: Folsom Lake

Of these three reservoirs, Folsom has the

shallowest slopes and thus the easiest
potential riding. In September 2015 it was
just months from hitting its record low since
first filling in the 1950s, exposing broad
swaths of sandy lake bottom more than
half of its nearly 18-square mile full surface
area that was eminently (fat) bikeable.
Acres of mud near the receding lake shore
created a new flotation/traction challenge.
And by challenge, I mean I got mired
by getting too close to the soggy soils at
waters edge and had to push my way out
through muck over my ankles. Away from
the goop, sandy flats made for fast, swoopy

it starts with you.

riding until they curved into sandy slopes

where power and torque control were vital
to avoid spinning out. Turning the front
wheel too much was a sure way to plow up
a berm of sand and stop abruptly. Closer to
the upstream end of the lake, steeper terrain
exposed rocks galore for challenges similar
to those I encountered at Lake Oroville and
Shasta. Much of this shoreline had been
traversed by vehicles, but there was plenty
of exploring to be done out of the reach
of the motorized set. There was way more
land than I could explore in the time I had,
so Ill be back.
Unless it rains. A lot. Our state depends on
the water behind these shrinking reservoirs,
and Im rooting for the rumored El Nio to
do its wet and wonderful thing. If so, I may
have a lightly-used fat bike for saleor I
may need to buy better snow clothing.

Redddg: WWth the Ride!

yclists from all over plan to Visit Redding for The Shasta Cascade Sports Festival, May 27-29th, 2016. This includes a long course
triathlon, a marathon and half marathon, Olympic distance tri and duathlons, 5K and 10K run/walks, non-competitive bike tours, live
entertainment, food and beverages, a beer garden, and more for the 2,000 athletes and their families.
Sacrame
The Sacramento
River National Recreation Trail is a two-trail arrangement that crosses the internationally-acclaimed Sundial Bridge and
travels north to Shasta Dam alongside an historic abandoned railway; a scenic ride for the whole family. Cookie-cutter family vacations
may take the guesswork out of travelling with kids, but they also leave out the stuff that makes for lasting memories. Take the crew
somewhere original, where they can get dirty, be wide-eyed, and experience things no one in their classes can compete with. A soaring
sundial, bubbling mud, volcanos, waterfalls, and caves are all on your itinerary when you make Redding, CA your family vacation
destination. Mountains all around, 225+ miles of hiking and biking trails, a river running through it, and national parks nearby....sneak in a
sunny vacation to Redding this May.
The areas surrounding Shasta Lake and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area offer abundant unpaved trails that are popular with
single track bicyclists, and the mountains neighboring this growing river city-and home of the American Trails organization- present
endless opportunities for great trail experiences. Many trails in Castle Crags State Park grant unmatched views of Mt. Shasta, and Lassen
Volcanic National Park has scenic trails that take visitors to bubbling mud pots, boiling lakes, and majestic vistas. With all these trails and
300+ sunny days per year, its no wonder the San Francisco Chronicle named Redding the gem of the U.S. trail system. If you seek happier
trails, visit Redding!
