Dear Editor,
I loved your review of the Emirati
restaurants in the last issue. Quite
frankly, I have lived in Abu Dhabi for six
years and have never tasted authentic
Emirati food. Changing tracks, I visited
the Officer’s Club to take a sneek peek
at the sculptures being prepared to be
displayed all around Abu Dhabi and
I must say, I feel in love with some of
the designs. I am an art major turned
housewife and seeing those pieces makes
me want to take up my old hobby again.

Emirati wins Puccini Award: On March 27th H.E. Hoda Al Khamis-
Kanoo, Founder and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival 2010,
received the prestigious Puccini International Award from Massimiliano
Simoni, President of the Puccini Festival Foundation at the opening
night of the Puccini Festival Opera’s production of La Bohème, at the
Emirates Palace. The Puccini International Award was founded in 1971
and is awarded to those who have made a significant contribution to
promoting the life and work of Puccini. Previous honourees include
luminaries of the opera world such as Maria Chiara and José Carreras.
A recent recipient of the Commander of the Order of the Star of
Italian Solidarity, one of Italy’s highest honors, Mrs. Kanoo collaborates
extensively with the Italian Embassy in advancing cultural exchanges
and mutual understanding between the UAE and Italy.
International Calligraphy Competition: Early this month ADACH
announced it’s support for the 8th International Calligraphy
Competition, which is organized by the International Research Centre
for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA), dedicated to the memory
of renowned master of calligraphy the late Syrian Badawi al-Dirani.
H. E. Mohammed Khalaf Al-Mazrouei, Director
General for ADACH, said:
“The purpose of supporting this international competition is to revive
and encourage the development of classical Islamic calligraphy. Our
aim is to encourage artists of Islamic calligraphy to produce works
within the framework of the traditional spirit and rules of Islamic
Calligraphy and to protect it from trends that have emerged outside
of these principles. This attempt will provide a common platform to all
Muslim calligraphers to exchange their knowledge and approaches,
and enable the development of mutually artistic standards by Muslims
all over the world.”
This is the 8th competition, which began in March 2009, that covers
10 types of Arabic calligraphy. The types are as follows: Jaly Thuluth;
normal Thuluth; Naskh; Taliq Jaly; Taliq (Nastaliq); Diwani Jaly; Diwani;
Kufi; Riqaa; and Maghribi, according to Abdulla Al Ameri, Director of
Culture and Arts Department, ADACH.

Abu Dhabi Classics continues to weave its magic as the heart
of two of Verdi’s most powerful dramatic and moving operas,
“La Traviata” and “Rigoletto” are scheduled to be performed
by the orchestra of Venice’s legendary Teatro La Fenice, with
a line-up of soloists including some of the most beautiful
voices of our day: Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze, Russian
mezzo-soprano Julia Gertseva, Mexican tenor Ramón Vargas
and Italian baritone Franco Vassallo.

T: How do you cope up with the pressure of studies and
training lessons?
F: I am studying in the UAE University. My major is
Architectural Engineering. Trust me, it takes a lot of work
to keep on top my game in both these areas of my life. The
whole week, I stay in my hostel in Al Ain, keep practicing
both music and try and maintain good grades. While on
weekends, I return back to Abu Dhabi, so I am never out of
touch with my music. Infact, in the break time between my
classes, I often practice my training lesson pieces.
T: What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have
other music related hobbies?
F: Playing piano is at the top of my list, always! (Laughs) I
also enjoy drawing and painting. My sister and my brother
love playing the piano too!

of queries on the topic). Introduce these tips into your
everyday hair care routine and your lack-luster locks will be
restored to the former glory of their ‘Repunzel-like’ hay days.
• We cannot stress upon this enough but avoid over-use of
hair styling products as much as humanly possible! They
contain alcohol which dries out your hair.
• When bathing do not tug at your hair too much. Wet hair
breaks off easily leaving those unsightly split ends or worse,
bald patches!

purposes, like gels and hair sprays; should not come in
contact with your scalp. They cause dryness leading to a
dandruff avalanche and they also clog the pores on your

you use a shower cap to keep the moisturizer from dripping
into your iphone or blackberry while your texting.
• The secret of using conditioner after shampooing lies in
applying it only on the length of your hair. The roots of
your hair contain essential oils and usually don’t need extra
conditioning.
• Before taking a dip in the pool to cool off on a hot summer
day, wet your hair so that it soaks up clean water initially
instead of chlorinated water with harmful hair damaging
chemicals. Remember to wear a cap to the pool and as soon
as you get out; shampoo and condition!
• When using a hair dryer, use the cool setting. The hot blasts
of air may seem cosy but they damage facial skin too by
effecting pores and accelerating the aging process. Another
important point to remember is to keep the blow dryer
moving so as to prevent split-ends and roughness of hair.
• Stick to the routine of downward strokes while brushing. We
realize that huge “bird’s nest” puffs might be in vogue but
untangling the horrid mess later on results in unnatural loss
of hair and splitting of hair-ends.
• Shower with warm water as hot water can irritate the scalp.
• Wash your hair as often as you deem necessary to keep it
clean, but generally for oily hair you should wash it every
day or every other day and for dry hair only wash it 2-3
times a week.
• Rotate the brand of shampoo and conditioner which you
use periodically but try out a small amount on your hair first.
Sometimes hair responds differently to different products.

Garlic Breath!
Garlic - we all love it. In marinara pizza, Tzatziki sauce, basil pesto
and succulent roast lamb, and we all know that garlic is a super
food with natural antibiotic and cancer fighting properties blah
blah blah.
But believe me, all of that wonderful garlic talk goes out of the
window when the garlic you’re breathing in is blowing out of
someone’s mouth. And especially if that person is the passenger
next to you in an airplane 35,000 feet above ground trip for four
hours between Cairo and Abu Dhabi.
Forgive me for being indelicate, but the smell was so hideous it
drove evil thoughts into my head, like jumping out of the plane, or
jumping the pilot for an immediate landing.
The man sitting next to me was a huge man, with a sweet
temperament (he looked in my direction every so often to smile).
My reaction was to shrivel in my seat, unable to focus on in-flight
entertainment and hold a perfumed hanky to my nose. The stench
was so strong it made me sweat, and I spent the whole flight
wiping my face with icy cold water. Could bad smell be used as
a torture tool? Me thinks it can. And after that ordeal I believe
there’s a whole science on this waiting to be uncovered. And when
lunch came?? It was chicken tikka perfumed garlic butter rice and
ratatouille. Needless to say, I felt like purging.
So after weathering this experience, what is my suggestion? I
believe posters that list all those things that you can’t take
on board with you—like firearms, explosives, sharp knives,
unregulated drugs etc etc, should include a diplomatically worded
recommendation asking passengers to do a quick body odour
check before embarking. And if you have garlic breath? Well, you get
politely escorted out of the plane to a specially outfitted detox room
where you’re made to air out your lungs in time for the next flight.

A common, and extremely annoying
mistake, we see in the UAE, and this by
people who are longtime residents of
our fair emirate, is the misspelling of Abu
Dhabi. For anyone who has doubts it’s Abu
Dhabi—not Abudhabi. Dubai, Sharjah and
Ajman are rarely misspelled. But then you
see variations in Fujairah, which is often
misspelled as “Fujeirah or Fujaira and then
there’s Umm Al Quwain which is habitually
spelled as Umm Al Quwein, Umm Al Qaiwain
(as spelled by the National Bank of Umm Al
‘Qaiwain’)or Om Al Quwain.
The challenge in transferring spellings into
English is that words in Arabic are written
in a different alphabet, so there is no
standard spelling in English. Mohammed
can be spelled Mohamed, or Muhammed,
or Muhamed, or Mohammad, or Mohamad
etc. Anyone in the business of tracking
registrants for an event knows how difficult
it is to track by an Arabic name if all you
have a name without information on how
the person spells it.
There have been initiatives, some by
reputable institutions to ‘standardize’
Arabic spellings of names, but such a goal is
laughable at best. Imagine being told how
to write your name…sorry you’re name is
D-u-w-a not D-u-a-a, or its M-a-r-i-a-m not
M-a-r-y-a-m etc.
A person’s spelling of his or her name should
be respected. And so it should be for cities
and countries. So let›s have one version
of Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. The only
exception that we›ll see is bound to be
spelling using Latin letters but in another
language, which would excuse (well, almost)
the French spellings of Abou Dhabi and
Doubai. But other than that, no mistakes s’il
vous plait.

“I travel in the public buses quite frequently and I think the government needs to be applauded for their
efforts in providing an economical and convenient means of transport to all. However I do have a complaint.
In hot summer months (which means almost all year round), many labourers also use the bus for commuting
to and from their homes. There is no politically-correct way to say this but most of the time, due to the nature
of their work, they stink! I wonder if automatic air fresheners can be introduced (maybe Airwick or some other
brand) to keep the buses smelling nice and also to keep the other commuters breathing! Sometimes I wonder
why bathing facilities are not provided
to the workers on-site to counter the
social rejection and embarrassment
they must face while travelling by
public transport. I too wish to have my
discomfort known but then I imagine
myself in their shoes and I realize it’s not
right for us to blame them. So, are the
rest of us to suffer silently?”
